The Johnny and Denise years were the best,by a long shot!

This was my morning ritual as a teeneger in the 90s. Wake up, telly on, and the Big Breakfast was there to brighten spirits and lift the mood until it was time to head out for school at around 8.30. It set you up for the day. Modern life feels so grim by comparison, everything is so serious. Now more than ever, we need a lighthearted, colourful and silly start to the day! Bring back the BB!

I was a teenager when it first aired and I was hooked. I’m from the highlands and had to leave for school at 8am and get a shitty double decker bus 10 miles across single track roads in blowing gales and rain, but watching a bit of this before leaving cheered me up!

Big breakfast, TFI friday, Gamesmaster and Bad Influence were the UK shows of my school days.

I was in my 20s working when this was on. I could only watch the first hour. There was a time when I used to set my VCR to record the second hour so I could watch it when I got home. This was was probably my all-time favourite TV show.

looking back, I feel when this program was wound up the world changed and the fun ended

I watched 96 to 2000, my secondary school years pretty much. Great tv for a golden era in many of our lives.

I used to come back from a night shift at Virgin Atlantic at 0645, had a shower, jumped into bed and this lulled me to a blissful sleep. Jonny Vaughan & Denise V.O then Lisa T were the dream team

I miss it too. I miss that era, without all the keyboard warriors and the excessive negativity from people dying on hills protecting notions that drain energy from the soul. It was a better time.

Hi. Thanks for this it brought back some memories, I worked on the show in 1999 for about a year, before I transferred out for the first series of Big Brother to Endemol and never returned. That house was such a strange place to make television with everyone packed into what was a very confined space, horrible place in the heat of summer. Fond memories though especially of the wall around the pool, which myself and another crew member got the task of painting one Saturday and we ended up with the security guards getting pis**ed in their little shed! Happy days ☺️

I loved watching this video, thank you so much for making it. The Big Breakfast was an amazing part of my teenage days, I think Chris and Gabby were the best era for me. I used to videotape each episode and watch the second half when I got back from school. Assuming the old episodes still exist somewhere, it would be brilliant to have the chance to watch them again somewhere online. I guess we can dream...

Im the school holidays id hang on the fence and wait for the show to finish to meet all the celebs, got to meet danni and kylie minogue, chris and gabby, mark aka joe mangel, paula yates, roy walker to name a few, was obsessed with the show, it was a big part of my childhood. Shame times are so different now.

Absolutely loved it, especially the Johnny and Denise years. Almost goes without saying. So many belly laughs that I can remember. Lucky that there are a few episodes on RU-vid but I’d love there to be more. Johnny and Denise presented Steph’s Packed Lunch Show last year together so it’s nice to see they’ve made up.

Great video! Loved the Big Breakfast and morning aren't the same now. My wife was actually a make up artist on the show and is in a few of these clips. She was in the Johnny and Denise eras.

I often watch it on RU-vid .. sometimes I’ll even match dates to watch them so it’s the same day as the show was first aired

This was a great time. You used to have time to watch a bit before college or work. Now? It’s GET TO WORK! It was a good and fun time. Kelly Brook was a lovely eye cleanser too.

I used to watch this as a kid used to be my programme for getting ready for school could never stay till 9 unless i was off school lol.

I appeared on this show as part of a competition called “My name is” with Bacon and Byram. Ordinary members of the public were invited on to the show simply because we had names shared with famous people. I was on with a Russel Crow and a Will Smith. I am……. Richard Bacon.

I used to get up just before it started every morning so i wouldnt miss any and was often late for school by about ten mins every time :-) It was fun and it was funny.

Loved that show from day one

Chris, Gaby and Paula were my favourite. I was in secondary school when it started and it was brilliant.

The 90s were awesome and I was always gutted that work started at 8am so I missed most of the show.

I had the privilege of modelling clothes on the Big Breakfast over 7 times and still have the footage on VHS standing next to Denise Van Outen and once Lisa Tarbuck I remember after the show cast and crew would all sit around a long table and have breakfast together whilst Johnny Vaughan would tell jokes , they were incredible times !

When we where a proper country..the government really have sucked the life out of us..

46 year old here. I miss the old days. No woke bs or social media. The world has changed so much. This is heavy nostalgia and it feels sad. Then my Saturday mornings were, Motormouth, Ghostrain, or Number 74 which i loved too

one thing I enjoyed over everything was how you let certain points play. The Johnnie Vaugn prison interview in particular. nice one.

What a time to be alive

I never thought much of Johnny. But him talking about prison was incredibly interesting. Also seems Lisa was worried about him talking about it at one point. She seems like a good egg too

One episode I remember very well was a New Year's Day episode (i think) where they "pretended" they were still "up" from the night before... and to this very day, I'm _sure_ they were off their faces from the night before.. just hilarious 👌🏼

I was 18 when the very first breakfast show was aired in the UK. Until that point me and my mum had sat idly chatting having a bite to eat before we both went to work. That morning of the very first broadcast we both sat there a good few minutes before it started. Eagerly waiting for the new dawn of early morrning TV. I'd say it definitely changed our viewing habits. Mostly for the better. There was the odd guff certainly. But generally in those early days it was at least 50% watchable.

Vaughan's description of his years in prison made fascinating viewing. BB was a great series, much missed. Such a fun and anarchic start to the day. Best under Chris Evans and Gabby Roslyn and Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen. Staggering awful with anyone else. Very 90s in retrospect and as the recent attempted revival proved, it was best left there.

Thanks for this its brought back great memories, I had no idea I still knew the words to "wakey wakey wakey rise and shine" 😂 Alot of vids on here about bb are slagging it off and mocking its juvenile male centric humour. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who misses the days when the world was more sane and happy.

I was 19 when it first aired and to be honest, was a bit of a party animal back then and usually didn’t wake up until waaaaay after it had finished. However, in 1998 I was told that Deep Purple, one of my favourite bands were going to be on it so I purposely woke up to watch, (even though I could have set the videoplus to record it), I watched the entire episode….and was hooked and fell instantly in love with Denise Van Outen. After she left I fell instantly in love with Kelly Brook, then after she left I went back to sleep.

Always watched this in the morning before school great times and great TV in the 90s 100% better than the crud we have now

Hi :) I came across your video whilst I was actually editing mine... I'd planned on doing it for ages but great minds think a-like I guess. I'm about to release part 2 of 3, looking at Channel 4's breakfast shows (which covered Big Breakfast)... I saw your video which is brilliant by the way... but I didn't want to see yours until I'd done mine because I didn't want to be accidentally influenced by what you'd made - we cover a lot of the same topics and I think i fathomed out the timeline of who came and left when - a lot of footage trawling and guess work by the set and the curtains behind the main hosts. Anyway I've mentioned your video at the end of mine and put the link in the description. Hope it gives you a few views. I've had a browse at your other videos and I've subscribed and I'll be watching a few more before getting my third part out. Again, brilliant video!

Great reminise! I remember the BB well, for anyone interested Johnny and Denise did return briefly to co-present 'Stephs Packed Lunch' on channel 4 recently. I'm trying to work on an agreement where I can post or stream their segments on my channel as it was an independent production. Hope to announce good news there soon!

It's was forced happiness, kookiness, anarchy and laughter but I didn't mind the Jonny Vaughan, Denise Van Outen years.

Why isn’t telly this good anymore! Must be the same age as it was my high school morning programme. The tea cup game sticks out. Ben the boffin. Pun of the day or was it week? Genius! In my head it was always the old house. How they fitted a crew and all that equipment was nuts. Must have been boiling! Some brilliant presenters and belly laughing at that time of the day. Was good for your mental health!

Memory is a strange thing, I had no idea that Chris and Gabby only did 2 years and the house renovation and the Vaughn era felt like the footnote. I honestly have no memory of the guy who preceded Vaughn, although he seems all right. Did I stop watching or was it just that unmemorable? I remember at the time thinking people in other countries should get to enjoy a local adaptation. Why aren't they doing an American version? Then I read reports they were planning it but nothing else. Last year I discovered a video on YT about the American version, not only did it exist it ran for a while on the then niche F/X cable channel. They actually did a pretty good job at least initially but overall it wasn't something that was the phenomenon that was The Big Breakfast

Any else remember the town mayors having some sort of race and one of them ended up accidentally getting their privates out while running. It was hilarious.

There’s no way they weren’t either drunk or on some other kind of stimulant to have that much energy that early in the morning! 😂

Watching the old episodes of BB when Denise returned & having the info that Denise gave about her return….You can definitely feel the frost between Johnny & Denise.

Compare it to watching re-runs of Friends? What a sad life you must live.

Just finished watching this, sadly the production company Planet 24 is no more, and they didn't do much in the way of preserving the 2000 odd editions (remember this was a live show), quite a few people taped the show (including me, I have the first few vital months on tape which is now missing), so their maybe just under 500 full editions left in private hands.

omg, I was in my last 6 months of school when it started, then I watched it before collage... I never watched it at university though, or when I left nd got a job O_O... but I really enjoyed the years I did see ^_^ EDIT: My best friend's collage tutor did end up on TBB, he did some bizzar thing with his mates XD

Yes, it was rough and ready, slightly anarchic in a TISWAS type way and totally unmissable. I used to record it and watch it in the evenings. I kept the week's tapes when it was guest-hosted by The Master, Bob Monkhouse. That was surreal but Bob made it work so well. Then it ended and a generation later, Channel 4 tried to revive it but as a totally black production. No wonder nobody watches 4 anymore.

Fantastic piece of RU-vid work would be good if you could re-edit without the annoying VHS Fuzz in the background and increase the frame size of the VHS footage to at least 14:9 😊😊

Enjoyed your video. Made a few notes whilst watching it... Paul Ross was the outside broadcast presenter before leaving and later returning as main presenter. Mark Little became full time host after Paul Ross' 3 day a week replacement Richard Orford swapped roles with Keith Chegwin on the outside broadcast. Keith and Mark shared hosting duties for a time (2/3 days a week) before Mark took the role 5 days a week. Keith then covered Mark's holidays. The show wasn't taken off air in 1996. Rick Adams was moved to the outside broadcast shortly after Johnny Vaughan's initial 2 week stint on the show. Rick left the programme around 6 weeks before Johnny started full time. Johnny and Denise's initial stint lasted around 1 year 4 months. Jenny McCarthy's week on the show preceded Kelly Brook. The millennium show started at 00:30. The show didn't come off air between Johnny's departure and the 2001 relaunch. RI:SE was cancelled in 2003. The reboot wasn't cancelled. It was only ever a 4 week run.

Here in the U.S. this setup looks pretty familiar with our morning shows. Ours have the same cheesy and overly pretentious personalities. But it looks like I've you guys had some big time guests. Was the BIG Breakfast broadcasted throughout all of England? Some of the content you guys had for this show seems to be more risky than we would allow. Sexual innuendo and talking back at kids lol. Great stuff.

Firstly thanks for this trip down memory lane. Watching this reminds me just how much the 90s signified the freedom and happiness we had in the UK and other countries back then. It's not just nostalgic but kind of tragic to compare that with how the world is today, and I blame most of the problems on the Internet and social media. Obviously there are other factors but being a 1975 baby I've witnessed the rise and steep fall of humanity and the social aspect of our once good nation. Now wokeism is destroying everything good in my opinion. As well as me getting old,i don't think we can ever reverse the harm done and this beautiful era in time will never be beaten.

Did johnny and denis finally bury the hatchet ?? I havent though about this programme for 25+ year's. I enjoyed it and like many other only caught the first hour. It was fantastic and massively under appreciated by myself. Like soccer AM you just assume itll keep going and the standard will always be high. Alas, modern TV just isnt fun any more. I loved BB. The Johnny and Denise era was the high point. Such fun. However, I can’t watch footage of it for too long these days without feeling it’s a bit dated and irritating at times. Maybe I’ve outgrown it. The new version they did recently wasn’t great, mainly because the presenters were a bad choice and things have moved on. Kids in the morning before school are on their phone, radio in the car to work… it just doesn’t seem natural to watch TV like it did in the ‘90s

I’ve heard of this back in the day from friends who went to the UK and thought this would have really been a hit in the States but morning shows tend to be run by news departments by the major networks so they have to be kinda serious. Makes me think if CBS had adapted the Big Breakfast to the USA they might have had a morning show that worked instead of the stinkers they’ve had over the years!
