I wish the current generation would experience the same variety of styles and movements from the 80’s and 90’s instead of just following the Hypebeasts.

Its the exact same today. There are so many different subcultures and styles today that the youth is pushing forward. The whole “hypebeast” stigma is just the brands that are trending, but most young peoples also look into thrifting as a trend. PLEASE look at videos and a more in depth look into fashion before saying some bs accusation like this. Watch vidoes like “what highschoolers are really wearing ___” etc. frugal aesthetic also has a good selection of different popular styles.

Its crazy to think how some of these other brands existed and flourished during this time, and how far down certain lanes each respective designer has gone compared to their all, very close together, roots. I just got a down Undercover, "human control system", vest from last season on the way in the mail, and while I have other pieces, hearing the info and the general surrounding that Jun had with his other contemporaries makes you feel like you're really wearing something special. But I do need to get on that ganguro game real quick, shit's fire. Great video as always Reggie.

So recently i went on a holiday on JP and as a street wear enthusiast i had to go cop some clothing and so i copped a bape shark hoodie among other things, however when i opened my shark hoodie from its dust bag i noticed that the sleeve tag was missing (i bought it from the official bape store) i just wanted to know is this kind of thing was common?

I lived in Japan at the height of Gyaru and Ganguro style. Even when I was young, I wanted to push a Yankii down the stairs. They’d trip on the Ganguro sitting on the train station floor. Oh the 90s.

Is Tokyo really the Streetwear Capital of the world? Even more than NYC? Just actually curious because I was unaware.
@vladtepes3946
@vladtepes3946 6 лет назад
Percy Ellison I think it is fair to say that. NYC and America in general is way too obsessed by brands (see Supreme/Boost/Fear of God losers) . Turns street wear kids into cartoon characters - they can't be taken seriously. In Tokyo you have that, too...but it feels different.

I would like to add something to this--as someone who has traveled to Harajuku 17+ times since 1995 and lived there for 4 years. If you compare Japanese fashion with that of the West...it is somewhat LESS of an indicator of who you are as an individual, what your economic class is, and especially what sociopolitical values you hold and how you "position" yourself in relation to the mainstream. The fact that, and I'm generalizing a bit here, many Japanese people see themselves as more similar to each other than we do in the West, is actually what allows the extraliberal fashion experimentation--cause it's not a reflection of a totally different "way of life". If from Monday to Friday you're in a school uniform or business attire, what you wear on the weekends may appear to indicate a deep-dive into a lifestyle, but it doesn't mean that you really live an alternate existence. There are those in Japan who are truly outside the system and really do want to reject the mainstream...and you can instantly tell. They're often not that into fashion at all. --To be fair...we're all going in the direction of uniformity now because social media makes it more challenging to develop fully insular scenes. They must really be intentionally incubated from social media to become something well-defined and essentialized.
