@@joemagyar7149 Dorothy accidentally mistaken to be a man or a lesbian by other people was a running gag throughout the show, ironically. Bea served in the marine when she was young and her voice was so thick and heavy that many people actually thought she was a man
@@emiliawilson4378 - I'm not fully sure, but I took it to be a play on the idiom "light in the loafers" which is a reference to being gay. Blanche is saying he's so light in the loafers, he's going to float away. Edit: Other comments say it's a "fairy" reference. Maybe that was it. Either works.
Anita Bryant was an evil, draconian witch who wanted to prevent homosexuals from moving into and improving her neighborhood in Florida, where this TV show is set. She had once been thought to be beautiful and was given the title of Miss America, so she had some notoriety and gained some media attention. It was long ago and I think she failed, so she really isn't relevant any more, but if you piss off a queen, we are never going to forget it.
@MrSebboxxx Tbh it's actually not. When you're watching singular clips such as this, it's funny. However, when I've found that when you watch the episodes in full, the humour is very dated. Me and my mother (who was a hardcore Golden Girls fan with her mother, sister and friend, who would all watch episodes on repeat) has admitted that she doesn't find it funny anymore because of how dated the humour feels.
'she doesn't approve?' 'now look here stretch....whatever the problem is, overlook it, my mother did with my marriage...and if you say something smart I'll slap you silly!' LOL
Can someone explain what he thought she was gonna say? I don't get the part about his marriage. Maybe his mother overlooked the fact he married a man? Or does it mean he married a woman bc gay marriage wasn't legal yet?
@@adrianerose7896 oh c'mon, that dude was gayer than a picnic basket in the middle of the gayest block in the gayest part of SanfranPSYCHO I mean he was portraying a gay wedding planner, and that his mother had a problem with him being gay but, overlooked it eventually when he got 'married' the mere fact that Dorothy was holding up the wedding because she didn't approve of her mothers' decision set him off, but that exchange was hysterical
@@BlacKnightRising okay but I never said it wasn't funny? I just asked why it was. I'm not American, nor am I a native speaker, and I may lack cultural context, which is why I asked. I certainly didn't come here to be snapped at, thank you very much.
@@adrianerose7896 oh go rest your skull you ranting lunatic, nobody was 'snapping' at you, oh God I hope you're not married because I can only imagine the hell a man would be going thru right now listening to your insanity!
And it happened so many times. Remember Sophia and her balloon after buying shoes? Blanche pops the balloon and all three of them don't even crack a smile. They were consummate professionals.
@@graperonto Rue would always pinch the bridge of her nose to keep from laughing note how she does that in. balloon scene in this scene I imagine it's why they could keep the camera on them only for a certain period of time
In the Wizard of Oz, Jud Garland could not stop laughing at Bert Lahr playing the Cowardy Lion. In one scene where she slaps the lion she visibly starts to laugh and barely conceals her smile. I have met Bert Lahr's son(John) here in London a few times :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a5Gls_p20yI.html
There was another ep where they at the kitchen table talking about sex, and Sophia said, "...then all these feelings I've been having must be colitis." Rue immediately dropped her head to cover her mouth with her hand, and her shoulders were shaking so hard. 😂
Jean Kennedy. I am gay and I don't like the stereotyping, BUT, this character is real. Not all gay men are like that but there are enough that are. So I don't mind the humor in this at all. This is practically the only type of gay person who could stand up to Dorothy. Why not just enjoy the humor for humors sake.
Jean Kennedy, I totally get you and agree with a lot of what you are saying. But let's be real, not all gay men are like your friends and you shouldn't be so judgmental of those who are not and be so judgmental of the portrayals of those gay queens who are camp. They exist and have a right to exist the way they choose to act. So if the enactment of this type of gay person shows up in a show, it definitely is NOT unreal. Neither does that mean that the person in the role is a model representative of the group as a whole. Yet I can't help but believe that they are just as sincere in who they are as the non-flamboyant man who loves another man. Biggots are going to judge queens as harshly as they do masculine homosexuals, if they are not open minded. I am 67 years old and am gay, and not at all flamboyant. i have found that true biggots couldn't care less if I am not. I have lost the friendship of many people who treated me decently when they found out I was a homosexual. To them I was a "homo" regardless of how I acted. So at my stage in life I just don't sweat it, and I laughed my ass off when I saw this scene, NOT because of the gay man but how he tamed Dorothy. That very rarely happened on the show. By the way, have you seen the movie "When I'm 64"? If you haven't, try to see it. It can be watched free on youtube.
@@aoto8897 Ok sure to be fair she didn't say anything smart- about his marriage comment but I'd say calling this skinny balding guy Rambo definitely counts as smart &and I gotta love it! Dorothy gets the last word again!😂😂😂😁
Yes this guy was very funny!!! When he challenges Dorothy LOL also when he calls Blanche Anita Bryant what a hoot!! Younger audience probably didn't understand, though!
The waiter"now look here stretch I've 100 cheese puffs and caterers both on the verge of collapse. My mother dealt with my marriage and if you say something smart I'll slap you silly". LoL 😂😆😆
Missed opportunity: a spin-off show after Bea left the Golden Girls, featuring her and this hilarious caterer as neighbors trying to outsass each other on a daily basis. OMG. Imagine the comeback lines I can bring with me the following day to work.
I agree with you one hundred percent.I also noticed towards the end of the clip,Blanche look like she is about to burst out laughing. She is trying hard not to laugh.
This show was so groundbreaking in so many ways! RIP all these wonderful people. Thank you Rue, and Bea, and Betty, and Estelle for being a friend over this last year. It's been rough.
Blanche's "you're ready to fly right outt here, aren't ya" was one of the funniest lines ever spoken in the GG. And Rose's face after she said it was definitely a "Kodak moment" also.
My thinking that she is calling him a "fairy" (a bad slang word for a Gay person) and since fairies fly, that's what she intended. One of the funniest lines on the GG. Another one is when Blanche is with Miles and his daughter. Miles was upset because his daughter told Rose that she didn't think that Miles was ready for another relationship since her mother had passed recently. Blanche replied something like "I don't think it's too soon. Why, I had guys calling me when their wives were in intensive care". Miles even got tickled after she said it. If I can find the episode, I will send it to you. It is season 5, episode 15. Here is the website. Go to 15:40. That's the good part. www.bing.com/videos/search?q=season+5%2c+episode+15+golden+girls&&view=detail&mid=287383672E5CF08C9BCB287383672E5CF08C9BCB&FORM=VRDGAR
Is it possible to still HONOR the writers of this amazing brilliant fabulous show!!! If so please send them a Cart Load of Oscars and Emmys !!! They truly still deserve it !!!
Absolutely hilarious! I replay it many times every time I am here. And I am here many times...believe me! This is the only guy who faced up to Dorothy and lived to tell the tale! Absolutely brilliant screen play and acting!
The look on her face floored me when he called her that. She is such a crack up she is quite the character She always makes r me laugh the most it doesn't take much when it comes to her. Bea is such an incredible performer
Oh my gosh! How many times have I laughed out loud at this scene. Back then and now. I love that guy! He's absolutely hilarious, and I wish he could have had some kind of recurring role on the show. I wonder what happened to him, and why we didn't see more of him in other roles.
Sebastian Wendel omg i watched the secind part of this movie yesterday and yes i think so too. Franck was too cute haha 😂 your comment was 11 months ago, how are you now!!?
Sebastian Wendel yes, the father is always very confused in the whole movie, the best part was when he faints the moment the doctor tells him that his wife is pregnant😂😂😂
