I read The Goldfinch when it first appeared. What sticks with me most vividly is the character of Boris. He was so alive and ultimately so infuriating. I also remember thinking the author was indulgent, but if I had her talent, I would probably be indulgent, too. My overall feeling about the book was that it was worth reading in spite of not having satisfied me. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for the review. I always enjoy your videos.

the goldfinch is honestly still one of my favourite books ever, has been since I first read it nearly 10 years ago. that not-boredom you describe is exactly why I love it.

The last time I've heard you mention your 'so' it was as fiancée, so congratulations for the next step! :-) About the books, I really look forward to reading both The Goldfinch and The Secret History. Both seem like the kind of book that would take me back to more romantic and "aesthetically naive" moments of my reading life, which is pretty nice by itself.

Great review. DT is a favourite author of mine. I read "Goldfinch" ten years ago, and re-read it a month ago. I got a lot more out of it the second time. It could have been sluiced down a bit, like any long book. But, heck; it's Donna--I just pray she completes another novel soon--I ain't gettin' any younger.

I really like that you compared the ending to the ending of War and Peace. I had the exact same impression, although I feel Tolstoy pulled it off much better. I didn't feel that the message of The goldfinch was nearly as powerful. That said, it was very immersive and pulled me in with its strong senses of place. You're also dead on about her writing of male friendships. There are a lot of resonances in this novel for me on that axis.

I’ve never before looked up a review after after finishing a novel. However, I invested so much time and energy reading this book I felt I wanted to get “more” out of it. This review certainly gave me what I was looking for and many thanks. How did Theo meet up with Hobie? Something to do with The Ring…? but I missed it.

I completely agree with you on the “cake and eat it too” point. I also think that notion is true of The Secret History. It simultaneously calls out and revels in academia. In all of her work, Tartt seems to walks a fine line in which it is often impossible to distinguish deconstruction from further perpetuation of the relevant trope. That said, I still can’t get enough of it.

It's been a while since I read this one but I remember having very mixed reactions. There were parts I absolutely loved. There were drawn out parts that got boring, and there were parts where I just wanted to yell at the characters to stop being ridiculous. Lol. Overall I enjoyed it. Long and complex, over complicated at times just like real life can be.

I enjoyed both but more partial to the Goldfish. It's about time for Donna Tartt's next creation!

I liked Goldfinch most of hers. Actually I like Tartts novels on the order of publication exactly, which is kind of a feat itself, I think. And initially I was slightly unconvinced as well. But I’ve thought of it incredibly often and settled very well. One of the few books I bumped from 4 to 5 on Goodsreads after a few months.

Thank you for this great review! I read The Goldfinch first and really enjoyed it - it's one of those books where the scenes and characters have stayed vivid in my head nearly ten years later. I read The Secret History many years after I read The Goldfinch, after several fellow fiction writers told me it was their favorite novel of all time. I think I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't gone into it with such high expectations! I remember thinking, once I had finished it....really? Favorite novel of ALL time?!?!?

I much preferred the secret history to the goldfinch. Goldfinch felt cliched to me, it didn't add anything to my life. But maybe this is because I read the secret history when I was a teenager and goldfinch when I was in my 20s.

I already wrote a rather long comment on the Secret History video, where I also mentioned why I liked and didn't like all Tartt's books. To add to that, I agree with everything what you are saying here, especially the part about enjoying separate sentences, which are absolutely masterfully written, but having issues with the overall book structure and the author's choice of what to spend time on and what to touch just briefly. Another thing which I totally agree on is the feeling of confusion where what's being communicated is truly deep, or it's a bad attempt to make it seem deep.

The Goldfinch is the BEST book I've ever read !! Pulitzer Prize Winner. I LOVED this book. It has all the necessary elements to make it a Pulitzer winner !! I read the Secret History also, but I did not feel the same when I finished reading it. I loved the fact that she hit the all important "HOLY SHIT" moments (the moment is only 1 sentence long!!) The same thing happens in "The Sympathizer" written by Viet Thanh Nguyen

I read The Secret History in my 20s and loved it. I read The Goldfinch much later and found it too long and sophomoric.

I'm definitely in a minority here but I really didn't get on with this book. Whilst the premise is intriguing, cliched, almost cartoonish male characters (particularly Boris), female characters that were instantly forgettable, unbelievable subplots that stretched my credulity , the lazy references to pop culture and the degree to which it needs editing all took away from it.

The more I hear about this book the more inclined I am to avoid it for the kinds of reasons you give here. Maybe if I happen upon it in a used bookstore I might get it but I don't think it is one I will seek out.

I couldn't finish it, Boris was soo ridiculously unbelievable as a character especially considering his age. She essentially took everything a pretentious fart sniffer would find interesting and crammed in into a teenage boy.

I read it after my mum lent me her copy. I enjoyed it. But it's too long. Lots of nice passages, with rich, metaphorical prose. Plenty of Dickensian overtones. The main character was very unlikeable, in my opinion, and is difficult to root for.
