Testing the Intel Pentium G3258 dual core CPU in popular and demanding games in 2023, using an RTX 3070 discrete GPU.
When the Pentium Anniversary Edition G3258 launched in 2014, it was with a great deal of hyperbole. The first overclockable Pentium in years (from the brand that locked them in the first place)! Unfortunately, no amount of overclocking could add missing instruction sets or hyperthreading, and so my usual batch of 2020s games don’t run too well… or sometimes, even at all. Is there any point to this CPU in an era where used i5s and i7s for socket 1150 cost less than a game does?

Couldn't agree more. I'd a Pentium G860 (2nd Gen. Sandy Bridge) along with an R7-260X (comparable to 750Ti, more or less). I bought that CPU thinking it'd serve me well for years to come... until I ran Mass Effect 3 (original) on it. There were tons of stutters and jitters and the system would struggle to maintain even 50FPS at times, probably due to Nvidia PhysX eating up CPU resources. Knew straight away what a massive mistake I'd made. Even the ancient Q6600 running bone stock would've fared better than that G860. Skipped the i5, jumped straight to i7-2600 and never looked back.

You missed the most important aspect: Windows XP I still use the G3258 to this day... not in my main build, but in my WinXP retro rig. It is the best chip possible for XP, by a very wide margin. Haswell (Broadwell) is the last platform that supports XP. There are no XP exclusives that can utilize more than 2 threads... and despite the 3.2 Ghz base clock, this beast easily overclocks up to a massive 4.5, sometimes even 4.6 or 4.7. The next closest performer to this in XP would be an i5 with two of the cores disabled in BIOS to save on TDP and voltage. It was technically a "Devil's Canyon" release alongside the refreshed i5-4690K and i7-4790K chips. With an improved TIM and voltage regulator under the IHS. Though you can still delid and liquid metal to eek out a couple more Mhz if you want.
@RuruFIN

Delidding didn't help for me, max OC was stll 4.7GHz, but did it anyway. These run so cool even with a copper-core stock cooler that almost anything can cool these.

@@RuruFIN Yeah I run mine at 5.1Ghz with a tower cooler without any fans on it, and the only case fans are one 200mm intake and one slim 200mm exhaust (BitFenix Survivor) it would be inaudible if I got a passive PSU.

Great video. Keep in mind that when it was released in 2014, a pc with the G3258 and a gtx 750ti could be assembled for around $250 which was an incredible value for it's time and 720p gaming was very common then. You could get a 4.2ghz with no cpu throttling on the stock cooler. A whole lot of games like Far Cry 3 were played on those budget machines. I am surprised that Crysis doesn't play better, maybe an update has made it worse for dual core pc's, (Maybe your overclock is too high, I have a suspicion that if you lowered the o.c to 4.5ghz AND lowered the voltage that your audio problems might disappear.) Now days, the G3258 is good for a cheap Windows 7 or XP retro gaming pc. As shown, Vsync is often a friend.
@goncalomoura9816
@goncalomoura9816 Год назад
No it wasn't, back in the day you could build an Athlon X4 750K + R7 260X for way cheaper and get more than double the performance of that combo, but nobody really knew it back then, reviewers were using outdated games optimized for Nvidia in their benchmarks, and many broke college students only cared about CSGO and LoL which are DX9 games. On the other hand, the G3258 and 750 Ti still have value for collectors, so sometimes buying iconic terrible hardware is a good idea.

10:42 I am 100% certain this CPU could have handled Crysis...on Windows 7. Around that time that was the most popular OS and the much lower overhead it provided could have made the experience at least playable. That alone was the reason most people held on to it until 2020, some even holding on until this very year (I myself only moved on because the GPU in my 7 system died a few months ago). Pity right now 7 has become a liability (online at least), as even extended support has ended, but it was fun while it lasted. Also, given the results on display, I'm sure a lot of FX 6300 users feel smug right about now...last I checked, there weren't any games to not start on that chip... P.S. Nice jab at sponsors in the intro XD P.P.S. I know Windows 8 was also around at that time, but let's be honest, it flopped (8.1 was too little too late)

I have a soft spot for the G3258 as it was my "return" to DIY gaming PCs after going the laptop route for years through and after college. I'm typing this comment on a bit of a descendant of that system, which is a 4770k I keep in my office and is still surprisingly competent today. I still have the old 3258 at 4.6 GHzin a B85 board and the R9 270x I originally paired it with, which serves as a media center PC and plays Star Trek Online in the guest room. Even when new it wasn't much of a beast at the time, but it ran slightly older games at the time really, really well. I got it in the MicroCenter bundle for $100 with a motherboard and RAM, and pieced together the rest of a used system I could afford on my recent-grad budget. I had a free 8800GT at first, and later upgraded to the 270x which was on sale for Black Friday in 2014. I remember being so impressed at how well it ran everything from the late 2000s-2012ish that were a struggle on my Gateway FX laptop from college. I definitely played some GTA V on it, and it did run Crysis back then, but it was on Windows 7. GTA V was not smooth, but it was playable, haha. I upgraded to a 4670k and crossfire 280Xs around that time, and kept the 3258 and 270x as a secondary system as it still exists today.

Informed others to simply save their money and at least get last gen deals on higher core count options. There was much pushback by those who decided it was worth defending such a... product. However as always, time has shown which ones aged better than others. Thank you for showcasing the G3258.

@IcebergTech
@IcebergTech Год назад
Yes, I'm sorry I might have been wrong on the 2680 v2's all-core boosts. As I said in the video, mine only went to 2.8GHz without Throttlestop and 3.1GHz with it. However, a commenter pointed out that 3.1GHz is actually the normal all-core frequency (check out www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%20E5-2680%20v2.html and click the down arrow next to "Maximum Turbo Frequency") and so the 2.8GHz I was experiencing was actually unusually low, maybe down to a TDP limit somewhere. Throttlestop merely helped me reach the proper boost speed, and didn't do anything special! As for 3.08GHz... well, I don't know why that would be the case, but 20MHz isn't going to produce a noticeable difference. Your setup sounds like it's working okay. The only way to get more performance out of it is via BCLK overclocking.

Ooof, this is rough, even back then a lot of games were already unplayble with this CPU. GTA5, Insurgency sandstorm, Dragon age inquisition to name a few. The rest like Rise of tomb raider, original Witcher 3 while playable stutter is a common occurrence. I even remembered I had to reinstall windows 8.1 cuz windows 10 would disable OC with H81 motherboard. This little thing did hold on till I got a Ryzen 2600, now replaced by a 5700x.

I commented this on the community post but I feel obligated to do it again here. this was the cpu in my first gaming pc, which I built for 350 dollars in 2017 when I was a broke middle school kid. paired it with an msi h81m p33 (which weirdly had overclocking), 8gb of ddr3 and a gtx 1050 2gb. back then I mostly played source engine games, minecraft, gta 4, etc. gta 4 mostly because I couldn't play gta 5 because even back then it was a stuttery unplayable mess on this cpu. same story with fortnite, which is why I never got into fortnite (this cpu did me a service, lets be real). but for those older games, it ran great. needless to say though, it was one of the first things I upgraded in that pc (went to an i7 4770k). interesting though that it outlived the 4770k, as I sold the 4770k to build a ryzen system 2 years ago and just gave the g3258, my shitty h81 mobo and the 16gb ddr3 i had at that point to my dad to use as a music production system since they really werent worth selling anyway. good thing he only uses windows 7 and mostly windows 7 era software because the g3258 is essentially just a core 2 duo on steroids. it's absolutely crazy now that you can get an *18 core* xeon e5 2699 v3 for just 10 dollars more than I originally bought that pentium for in 2017. speaking of the xeon, please please PLEASE do a video on the e5 2699 v3, it's literally a haswell ddr4 18 core for just 60 dollars on ebay

Fun video although you can tell it must have been frustrating to make it. The story of the Core series of CPUs is kind of interesting. The story goes according to publications at the time that it was a further development of the much older Pentium 3 mobile platform that someone in their facilities in Israel was messing about with. Turned out to be what saved the company from a developmental dead end. When I worked in a PC shop around 2005 we used to jokingly refer to P4 systems as space heaters. One could have argued at the time marketing and brand recognition was the only thing that saved Intel from being buried by AMD and Apple.

I also remember witcher 3 running on the program tho i had to use a program that forces the computer to think that i had quadcore setup. I think doing the benchmark in 1080p and pairing it with a much lower card like gtx 960 or 1050ti will be more cool for this video.

Back in the day, I was forever scarred by dual cores with Call of Duty: Black Ops. I enjoyed MW1 and MW2 well on my Pentium E2180 and 8600GT, but Black Ops just came outta nowhere the following year after MW2 and humbled my build. I went on to get a Core i3, wanted the i5 but couldn't get up to the price level at the time, but I was adamant that 4 threads were necessary. Then came this lovely Pentium G3258 that proved me absolutely right, shutting down all arguments. If I disable HT for example, all those issues you see with GTA5 manifests itself on my i3 3240, with HT on, completely gone, not even a hint of it. No matter how much you overclock a CPU, you just can't get over the 99% pegged utilization that's causing the issue.

well, supposedly Haswell systems can be fairly compatible with Windows XP, and given how XP era software won't require much, if any, multithreading, this CPU just might be perfect for a boutique "ultimate" retro XP rig.

Yeah, this sound desync is why we don't record in variable framerate; I used to use the G3258 to make videos. I mean, you totally can record VFR, you just have to reencode with a constant framerate later to avoid desync issues.

Actually, the switch the Pentium was due, in no small part, from the fact the Intel couldn't trademark numbers. So they couldn't stop AMD making their AM486 or Cyrix from their Cx486 processors; both of which dropped effortlessly into Intel spec 486 motherboards. So they created the Pentium brand.

I remember in the Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge days the question was frequently asked "Why isn't there an overclockable i3?" The answer, of course, was that it would cannibalize sales of i5's and i7's. Fast forward a couple of years and I've always thought of the G3258 as Intel finally sort of going "Here it is, this is what you asked for!" And I remember the hype level for it at the time being quite high. But they were still scared of making it too good and by then dual cores were teetering on the precipice of complete irrelevance. Nevertheless, I don't know if I could say it was a bad buy. It was probably better than any other CPU you could get for $75 at the time (and I think you could get them for $50 at Micro Center if you bought one with a motherboard), and it would have played most of the popular esports type stuff of the era, I don't think anybody sensible expected it to be a AAA title chip. Of course it's basically unusable now but even the Haswell i7's are falling off the cliff by this point.

The best use case for this CPU (outside of a best-case Windows XP retro system) is as a legacy Minecraft or Space Engineers server. Those two games only care about 1 and a half thread and some of these overclock over 5Ghz (mine sits at 5.1)

I have binned a bunch of these CPUs , most cap at 4.4-4.6ghz really hard to find ones that do 4.8-5ghz. my best sample does 4.9ghz at 1.375v. reviewers mostly got cherry picked samples to sell the product in a misleading way showing them easily doing 4.7ghz+ GTA V ran fine back in the day but due to a fairly recent update after its launch to address multi core threading issues it is now unplayable on the G3258. Before the update it could do 60fps locked fairly well with minimal stutter. Most games also hidden lockouts and will just not run on a dual core at all Far Cry 4 being one of them I think
