BEST VIDEO YET!!! The head to head comparisons and evaluations are great but this long term update and unbiased documentation of your time with this truck is awesome. Great job Andre.
Absolutely!!!! Been following these guys for YEARS!!!! unbiased!!!!! is the best!!! They say here is the data and videos and our thoughts, you make decision!! LOOL! Great job guys!!
Dealership: you have 600k subs on RU-vid.... no prob we will fix anything under warranty Dealership when I go in: you put bfg tires instead of goodyear tires warranty woun't cover it sorry.....
You guys lifted it, different suspension, different exhaust, different intake, 2-in bigger knobby tires and your disappointed with losing 2 MPG of fuel economy? Love your videos guys, I think you should be happy with the outcome after all of those changes.
8:13 it didn't have the lift and tires when they performed the fuel economy test. However, it's also hard to tell what the drive was like for them. If they were climbing a slight slope or not, as that would affect their overall results. 🤷🏻♂️
Agree. Bigger, heavier tires and wheels, they loaded it up with extra equipment and increased the wind resistance with the bar and lights too. All can decrease fuel economy.
I’m surprised they fixed that drive shaft under the warranty. They would have weaseled out of doing it for most owners, people who don’t have RU-vid channels.
It also depends on the dealership you go to… I’ve had small issues with some of my Chrysler products and at one point had to go through three dealerships but the third one was wonderful and took care of the problem without any bitching at all. The other two dealerships were ridiculous, And come to find out the problem I was having with the transmission was actually caused by the first dealership and the third dealership went to bat for me when I filed a claim with Chrysler themselves!
Nicholas Livoti for real! I had a terrible time with RAM when I had my 2018 big horn they tried to scam me so much when I had warranty claims. It’s literally the number one reason why I will never drive a RAM ever again. I traded my big horn for a Chevy trail boss and I’ve had zero issues with it and Chevy services.
Well to me that drive shaft should never have snapped. It's just a straight shot from the TC to the Diff, neither of which move on an IFS. The CV should have gone first, so that shaft giving out is very suspect to me of bad design or manufacture.
Yes...... offroad vehicle abuse is not usually covered. Especially with a lift and oversized tires. They could easily deny, and prove, that the damage was a result of the strain caused by suspension geometry and oversized tires the truck was not designed for .... lol....
Replaced under warranty? Here's been my experience at Ram for warranty repairs. Dealer " Sir your transfer cases blown "...Me "OK I still have a lot of warranty left ". Dealer " Unfortunately that pine tree air freshener hanging from your re mirror Voids your warranty"
You realize that increasing the tire size numerically lowered the overall effective gear ratio, possibly taking the engine out of "the sweet spot" for torque. Why don't you compare the mileage numbers from before and after the tire swap to see if there is any difference? Just a thought.
The comments about the driveshaft breaking here are amazing. You have wheel spin and then sudden traction while under close to full throttle in 4lo. Yeah, that's how shit breaks boys.
I'm very lucky when I went out my first time my group made sure I learned that you shouldn't be gunning it like that to get over an obstacle. With my open difs it was hard but I'm glad I learned the proper driving methods now before my bad techniques screwed me over
12:53 you can see the rock get picked up by the front tire and wedged against the fender. That's what broke the drive shaft. The wheel could not turn at all but torque was still being sent to it. Something had to give. This really shouldn't have been a warranty claim, but good on you for getting that one past them.
@@JD-ys7fj I wouldn't say a weak driveshaft design. Driveshafts and cv-axles are designed intentionally to be weaker than the differentials and transfer case to preserve them. Would you rather be replacing a driveshaft/CV or those other much more expensive parts???
Love your reviews. You guys are the most honest reviewers I have ever watched/read. As a former Mechanic at a Jeep (and other brand manufacturers) dealer I can tell you with those tires Chrysler would have made you pay for the driveshaft and probably voided your warranty. The only reason they did warranty the driveshaft is that they wouldn’t want to damage their relationship with TFL because of your reputation in reviews.
12.5 mpg, bummer!! My 2019 XLT Crew Cab 3.5 Ecoboost FX4 Max Tow ......I'm at 20.1mpg for a weekly average with mixed driving going back and forth to work. My best has been 23.4 on a 230 mile trip to the cabin. I couldn't be happier. Did you get anything close to 20 before you lifted it?
Johnny Bliss you’re right, it seems stock when the MPG test was done. But still good MPG considering elevation. I used to live in Denver and I had JK sahara by then, the elevation plus the cold weather made the consumption dropped ~2MPG.
According to the sticker, the 392's don't hurt it. But........I have 392 gears in my Big Horn and it has never hit the EPA estimate, unless I drive 45mph with a tail wind.I'm pretty sure the numbers are reflective of lower elevation and really clean high octane gas.
Mpg testing is done at sea level in laboratory conditions so there mileages were real world you almost never get advertised mileage in the real world even at sea level none of my vehicles do
The raptor brakes didn't whine like that... I do like the ram design. I'm wondering about long term reliability though... seems like tundra is a good choice for reliability but man that truck is out of date...
we have had that damn truck for a year and we still didnt get a city mileage test loop...you paid extra for mild hybrid and never really used it...we need a city test loop for people like me that work in town
The mileage will not be accurate. Changing tire size REALLY tells the computer that you went less miles than you actually went. Other changes like exhaust and intake can also change the MPG.
Broke a drive shaft with ~20k miles on it and you would buy it again?! Wow. Good luck when that happens again among other things and it ISN'T under warranty anymore. I don't buy trucks that leave me stranded with very few miles on them.
Drive shaft covered under warranty because they didn't want bad publicity in a video. Trailer pin connectors replaced under warranty because they didn't want bad publicity in a video. Look at all the Wrangler owners with denied claims for being offroad. Buddy of mine has same problem with his pin and they can never duplicate it. My Ram has now been at the dealer 5 times in 3 months over coolant leaks. 4 from the same place. 🤦♂️
You need to go to a different dealer buddy… Some dealers are great and some dealers absolutely suck! It’s really amazing the difference between service departments because some care and some don’t
2 recalls and a drive shaft meh. That's 3 or 2 trips to the dealership not to mention the time you go without the truck and the time spent at the dealership. And me personally I have bad anxiety with dealers
The lift shouldn't have affected it. Independent front suspension. The front diff and trans case dont move. So the drive angles shouldn't have changed. If it was a CV shaft from the diff to the wheel, then yes. But 2" wont change much either.
@@unknowntrucker7010 yea they can if they can prove it contributed to the failure. The 35" tires instead of the stock 33" would be a good reason due to the additional weight/stress. But even that aside. The videos of the usage could be considered abusive. Dont get me wrong, a truck should hold up to alot. But in this situation. I'd say fair game if it was out of pocket. But I guess they want good publicity too.... so...
You spent a pile of dough on that truck. What was the total investment including donated labor hours? What is the current resale market today? It"s a business expense to TFL, but you probably lost a year's public college tuition during the year over and above what a good 2nd hand Tundra would have cost operating 20,000 miles. I think.
@@elliottbran I agree, they probably initially said no to warrantying that but I'm sure TFL said oh well we will post it on RU-vid that you didn't fix the truck that we bashed to hell on purpose and tell everyone how horrible your product is. 100% what they did. Being rich and having a RU-vid channel gets you whatever you want anymore.
To be fair, with all the mods to the truck it can't be expected to get EPA gas mileage. That bar and lights in the back of the truck would cause a lot of those issues I would think, and the larger tires.
You keep saying the dealer replaced it at no cost... Recalls.. Broken this, not working that. As a business owner who relies on trucks, a truck being at the dealer for other than scheduled maintenance it's a loss of money. So yeah.. It IS costing me money.
ram left me stranded, ford with there 5.0 tick problems and now im back were i started with chevy and i only gotta deal with a sluggish transmission, i aint switching no more
Nobody buys a Truck for Fuel Economy and y’all keep approaching down hill angels COMPLETELY WRONG!!! You never go straight down and y’all need more lift to clear a lot of those opticals y’all go through.
Recalls, repairs, break downs, inconsistent quality...this is why I finally decided to trade my '04 Dodge 1500, which I bought new, for a Tundra this past black Friday. Dodge always fixed things without question while on warranty, but I was without my truck a lot, especially with repairs after warranty. I just could not go back to that. I have had many Dodge/Chrysler products over the last 30 years and some would have even called me a "fanboy". But, I have to say, even though I enjoy your channel, I'm sorry...all those mods are just putting lipstick on a pig. I wish you could tell us your opinion at 100k on the dial of that Rebel. It is only going to get worse with Peugeot in the mix...
I also owned a dodge 05. Nice truck always in the shop, sold it and drove a car for a while, bought a Toyota pick up which was a great truck but hated the seating position. Traded for a Nissan xterra which eventually got traded for a Titan. It's a great truck. TOO bad I more ppl don't leave Gm Ford dodge, like guy says below, Nissan Toyota are honest good trucks.
To be honest, you're comparing two different companies with now two different company cultures. Some people are giving Fiat a chance, others are not. I'm from Italy, so i've had my share of shitty Fiats. Uno, Panda, Tipo, etc... You name it. But, lately, they've made some changes. Good to see, but we won't know until the long run...
I'm most impressed by RAM replacing a driveshaft under warranty on a modified truck. Taking care of customers after they've paid isn't done by every company/dealership
21 thousand miles is not a long term review. My 2014 didn’t start falling apart until 42,000 miles. Along the way it had 6 recalls, it started ticking like a jackhammer, developed a vibration they never could figure out, broke exhaust manifold bolts, had issues with the cylinder deactivation solenoids, problems with the electronic steering because the idiots mount the control module underneath the thing where it gets wet, the back window and 3rd break light leaked, and a host of other more minor issues. I was soooooo happy when I rid myself of that thing at 62,000 miles! Never.... ever again!!
Great video Andre. Glad the dealer replaced your wiring harness connector and axle shaft. Really wonder if the dealership would replace them if you didn't have a RU-vid channel. We have two dealerships in town. I would buy a Ram from one and not the other. I would recommend repairs and service at the other one. Glad we have a choice here in town.
JohnnyTactical305 Please really. I’m thinking about engine electrical issues or the infortainment screen issues. I have the same truck basically and have no issues at all.
Jon I had a 99 Dodge Ram that had speaker issues on the right door. That’s my meaning of electrical gremlins, dumb little things that should work from the factory.
@Jessi Louis Naw this is just poor offroading driver skills. I've taken a stock z71 colorado multiple times through the mountains of colorado never had an issue.
ghosteye007 agreed, Roman has got to be one of the worst off road drivers I’ve seen, never takes responsibility for poor driving lines, zero finesse 😐 the other guys really carry the channel
Yep, it also lost in fuel mileage. Payload. Recalls. They just announced on the news that ram has a total of 13 recalls so far. The most of any 1/2 ton truck. Plus other things. Just watch this channel. Trailboss is a lot better in everything.
Trail Boss? The Chevy Silverado correct? I'm not a GM fan but their new trucks are looking good, and since Toyota has failed to update their 10+ year old outdated Tundra The Silverado HD or the new 2020 F250 7.3L are both on my list...IDK just would really depend on the incentives for me I think. I had a horrible dealing with GM on a vehicle in the past which really gave me a horrible taste for GM in general...I've always been a Ford & Jeep person...I did have a 2008 Toyota Tundra but with some repeat mechanical issues that thing got dumped at 104k miles and haven't regretted going back to much older vehicles sense then, but probably in a year or 2 I'll be looking at a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup and it'll most likely be up to GM or Ford to win me over and put a new truck in my driveway.
@@wildbill23c Yes the Trail boss trim is for 1500 series only though. I have a 2019 Silverado Trail boss and I love it. In HD trucks you can get a GMC Serria AT4 off road trim.
@@terrencejones9817 Ok, thanks, I was thinking they offered the Trail Boss for the HD's too...guess I'll take a peak at the AT4 then. Want to start looking now and not wait till the last minute LOL.
I had to change them early on 2006 model, was 10 years old 125k miles, it didn't have no loose feel while driving, but i asked tire rep shop friend to tell me and show me if it will get tiny loose while he is checking it by hand on lift. It had little tick and i wanted ball joints mint condition, got the most expansive ones ($750 all parts) with grease points and month later tree totaled the truck... They were really squeaking about 20k earlier, so 100k miles ball joints out is too early
The fuel economy numbers are for the truck's family as a whole. Case in point, I have a 2017 Rebel 5.7L 4wd, my best friend has a 2017 Tradesman 5.7L 4wd. The differences between our trucks aside from the option group is, he has the 6.5' bed I have the 5.5' bed, and his tires are highway tires while mine are off road tires. Aside from the tires and bed size our trucks are nearly identical and they are both about the same age. He gets in the high teens for economy on a regular basis, while I get in the mid teens regularly. His truck scales 100# more than mine, and our driving styles are very similar. Tires here are the factor at the end of the day. Prolly whats going on with your truck as well.
So something many people don’t realize any time you increase tire size on a truck you add to the strain put into the drive train. The broken cv shaft is most likely the result of the 35” tires and the extreme off roaming it was going through at the time. But with that said it probably should be built heavier but by what I understand about 1/2ton trucks today the front axle is a weak link on all of them. So much so they don’t recommend putting snow plows on them. And the plows that they make for them are light duty and light weight.
Most, wait I think all 1/2 tons are IFS now, those suspensions are trash when it comes to actually using a truck as a truck, and for what they were doing in the episode where they blew that CV joint in that drive shaft isn't anything close to heavy offroading...that CV joint is trash, they need to put some HD shafts in that thing if they want to pretend its an offroad truck...but then again the automakers figure most people today buying trucks like this turn them into mall crawlers LOL.
I’ve been doing a lot of off roading on trails similar to what you see of TFL, nothing too crazy like the rubicon but definitly nothing like a normal dirt rocky road. I’ve had my 4runner for 20,000 miles and nothing has been broken on the 4Runner so far.
So, you did the EPA mileage test “after” you lifted it (worse aerodynamics); added larger tires (increased rolling resistance); changed the exhaust (engine was tuned to factory exhaust); added off-road accessories (increased the weight)...Wow, your actual mileage was less, what a surprise 😂
Fixing the axle under warranty; might have been different for a usual consumer. I haven't experienced anything like this, but if I was a consumer and doing heavy off road driving the dealer could argue that you were pushing the limit of the truck too hard. Overall I like the truck and enjoy watching you put it through it's paces.
Awesome video! Id say the Rebel was exceptional, especially considering it is a first year new model. In comparison my 2018 F150 (not a new model) has had way more issues, but none of the abuse you gave the Rebel. Yep- back in the shop right now actually.
Lucas Harris 4wd hub vacuum issues @3k miles, several electronics issues (usb hubs replaced, trailer harness water intrusion, reverse sensors replaced), and dealer verified just yesterday it has the cold start engine rattle- vct/ timing chain problem. What is most frustrating is that every time it has a problem its 2 weeks to get into dealer, then the parts are always unavailable/backordered, so its another month before anything is fixed. The current engine problem is awaiting the actual tsb from Ford to be released, per dealer there are no parts currently- “check back in January”. That repair according to dealer will likely be replacing the vct units, and if it wasnt in warranty would be approx. $4200. Less than 2 years and 35k miles and i think its been 10 dealer visits for diagnose and repair so far which is unacceptable in my opinion. Also the undercarriage of the truck is rusting terribly, the rear diff looks like its 10 years old- I see this on alot of 2018 and newer trucks when sitting behind them in traffic (can tell year by stamped tailgate). Other various quality issues including tailgate handle sticking, dash hump, warped glove box etc... This is my first ford, I love the 3.5 ecoboost power and mpg, but with these issues it will be my last.
You call stuff bad and broken that are minor issues. For all the abuse, it seems to have held up well. Spinning and suddenly catching a wheel will cause CV axles to break.
@@811lily ok yeah they off roaded it more than most consumers, but what about the recall for the pedal adjustment and another recall for a battery ground stud? That's just sloppy quality control from fca.
I have a 2014 ford f 150 230k spins No issues My last one o sold at 330k No issues Prior 220k. No issues but a little rust Makes it hard to “ switch” brands Saw a gorgeous Ram today Brought me here Grew up driving Chevy and GMC pickups Have never owned one All three make good trucks I’d say
5.3s have gotten to be junk!! I sell them and our shop always has at least one in there with a blown engine under warranty. 4 of our salesman drive 16 and newer 5.3s and 3 of those engines were replaced before 80k. Our shop manager and 2 best techs now drive new rams. (We also have a Ford and Dodge dealership)
Austin Tites can I ask what is blowing in them 5.3s? Because when valve springs blew on my Hemi and took the whole motor with them I went to independent mechanic shop for an advice what is the best truck to get and their answer was, we all drive GM, go figure...
@@austintites3865 I sold my 2015 ram that was an electrical nightmare that 6 dealerships could not figure out. Chrysler ended up giving me 5k for the inconvenience. Bought a 2018 Silverado and a year later with 30k i am very happy.
Hey TFLT, I love you videos! I have a Hemi Ram and get well under the rated mileage as well. I was curious if you did the mileage test before or after the tire modifications?
So here is my question..... If you had to pay FULL price on the truck and parts... and not get any Warranty work cuz Dodge will screw the lil man and make him pay for the repairs.... (and yes, I have been a Dodge owner for 12 years now)...... Would you still take this over a new TrailBoss or Tundra?
I’m glad you guys at TFL have had a good experience overall, I bought my 2019 RAM with in weeks of you guys and I have so many electrical gremlins to the point that now I have had move forward with Lemon Law. Do I think all Rams are bad absolutely no; had 2013 and not one problem in 100k. I just think I got the truck that was made Friday 😝. I will be replacing the truck the Gladiator Rubicon. In the mid size market there aren’t many trucks that can tow 7k pounds, has front and rear lockers and disconnecting sway bar. Good luck with Rebel and can’t wait for the next project.
mattonthewater like I said I don’t think that they are bad, I just think I ended up with a bad egg. Happens with Ram, Ford, GM, even Toyota. Doesn’t mean that everyone of them are bad.
I have a 19' Limited 4x4 delivered in February of this year. Truck has been perfect over the last 8200 miles with one exception. A wiring harness was not secured properly on the assembly line. 150 miles after delivery the harness rubbed against a bracket and into a buss feedback wire and caused the truck to go into limp mode. Other than that...no issues. I love this truck!
I’m done with dodge/ram. I kept going back with Dodge and Ford and kept getting burnt. They don’t keep up like they did back in the day when you got a vehicle and kept it. Electrical, transmission, computer, eco boost etc just problems. Sorry guys but lots of money for my last Ram and even lost money on selling it so even didn’t hold value.
One of TFLtruck's best videos to date! Great work guys. Although I know the mods were cool and fun, the majority of viewers and the market can't afford a new fairly-loaded Rebel + all those add-ons. I recommend using a less-optioned-out truck in the future as your long term truck and pick one mod that is in your opinions most needed by that truck for great all-around off-road experience, be it a lift, bigger tires, overhead LED lights, and whatever. Power mods are cool but not cost-effective at all... and the Hemi already sounds great on Ram 1500.
I'm surprised that they replaced the drive shaft under warranty. Most would have blamed the lift/larger tires and "driver abuse". But glad it worked out.
The dealer has done a number of repairs for TFL that no other customer would experience. Their dealer knows who they are - happy for them, sad for us normal shoppers.
@@rkalla yea your probably right. Especially if they have a bad experience and do a report. However given the circumstances. I wouldn't fault the dealer either...
@@craigquann true but for us "real" consumers it skews this review... as replacing the drive shaft would have cost a pretty penny. I still like the truck though!
That's where the show is inaccurate, biased dealers. Truth be told you have about right under a 50% chance of you getting anything fixed by the corporate pos dealerships.
@@SimplyCarReviews yea. But vast majority of buyers wont be doing cliffhanger 2.0 either.....lol. however I'm not the vast majority... so yea I don't/wouldn't expect coverage.... tho my GM dealer does honor my lifetime undercoating/respray warranty for the rust proofing even tho I scuff it off every summer.....and have gotten zero flack for my leveling kit, or intake or oil catch can install... so I guess it depends.
I have the etorque and idk what a std V8 hemi gets but mine isn't good, in fact pretty horrible.....motor is great, sounds great but MPG vs my 21 GMC 5.3 is pretty sad......My 22 2500 silverado with 6.6 is about same as my etorque
Well I’m one for trucks I use them I work them I play with them if your worried about fuel economy then go buy a Kia . Yeah it’s nice to get about 20 mpg’s but at the end of the day it’s a TRUCK . Great video guys keep up the good work now get too the Tremor !!!!! 👍🏻 🤪
