Tucked beneath the coastal escarpment of the Great Dividing Range in one of the most remote corners of the northern rivers is a magnificent river gorge. The Clarence River is regarded as one of Australia's few large wild rivers. The place known simply as The Gorge has an important role in two fascinating creation stories. Dr John Jackson, a geologist and artist is passionate about the theory that 290 million years ago this river flowed backwards, north toward an inland sea. Bundjalung and Gumbaynggirr Elder, archaeologist and historian Robyne Bancroft, explains The Gorge is also part of the legend of Durrangun, which tells a dramatic story of the creation of the river.
