The weird thing Δημήτρη (μου αρέσει που μιλάω μιξ χεχε) is how today we refer for the half woman - half fish creature as gorgon(a) although in ancient times it was something different. Today's gorgona is closer to the tritons but in a female version. The first example of a gorgon to be like today's mermaid is the myth with the sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki who was transformed into a mermaid (gorgona).

@@vaggos013 Here's something really interesting about that story ( το γραφω αγγλικα να το δουν και οι ξενοι)that I recently found out, apparently in some versions of the story, Thessaloniki will turn into a classical gorgon (her hair will become snakes and all that) before sinking the ship.

@colt9836
@colt9836 6 месяцев назад
Euryale's scream wasn't an ability, it was her being fucking enraged by the death of her sister, Medusa. When Perseus killed Medusa, both of her sisters were filled with bloodlust and chased the hero, hot on his heels. The part of Stheno is true, it said by Ancient Greeks that she killed more humans than both of her sisters combined.

In the Disney's Hercules cartoon that came after the movie Medusa was portrayed as sweet, despite the snakes in the hair & purifying gaze. I actually like that depiction the most. Kind of Funny though considering she was also portraying in the actually Hercules Animated movie Disney made before that, & while she was only portrayed for a moment there she looked far more monstrous. It's quite a striking difference so it would be nice to see how she goes from Hercules being her "one true friend" to being her adversary

A devoted priestess to Athena, though there is one story that has her has the priestess of Hestia, who do to her beauty is rapped in the temple by Poseidon. Very nice video, excellent intro and I am glad you are here. By the way, the story of Medusa being priestess of Athena and her transformation by the goddess it was a very later story of the late antiquity and classical writers. Ancient Greeks and earlier writers in general believed she was one of the three Gorgons, with divine ancestry as you also said, and was born like her sisters in the same appearance with the only difference she was mortal and not immortal like them (and not a human before transformation).

@Mlackakao
@Mlackakao 5 лет назад
Woah! Love the intro, yet the info is always the highlight. I feel that the revamp of a gorgon’s looks is to further display how people often wonder into her territory. Her looks are indeed beautiful or more humanistic compared to her classical look, but the more beautiful something is (or at least, rumored to be beautiful), the more likely that people would sneak a glance at that thing, making it more evil than it really appears if it can persuade others to do something they weren’t suppose to do. Take for instance Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Medusa was depicted as a beautiful woman who covered her gaze through glasses and her hair under a...wig or wrap, I think. When people wonder into her territory, she seeks to convince her prey to look upon her like a seductress. In a sense, the classical Gorgon look produces a Boogey man kind of feel: a creature feared by all and should be avoided by all. Today, a Gorgon are challenges like the Devil in high heels. In the modern age, the best way to make a villainous Gorgon is by making her a challenge in the quest of Greek/modern Greek heroes like Percy Jackson or the newer versions of Perseus, as well as give her a reason to be pissed of by those who come into her home. Her beauty and human features make her relatable by many yet act as a deceptive tool for those foolish enough to look at her.

Indonesia has a number of snake-like goddesses, one of them Lara Kidul, officially the wife of the royal family (as if the Queen of England were married to the Green Man!). @@theMRsome12 no official source but general folklore and in fact the royal palace in Java still has an official room dedicated to this spirit. The most important kingdom was Mataram, the Islamic Sultanate which fused paganism and Islam the same way Rome fused paganism and Catholicism. Islamic kingdoms in general seem to feature her more than old Hindu kingdoms. Probably also because of the Islamic attitude towards paganism, that's what made her more bewitching and seductive than to Hindus who viewed her as just another spirit. She is based on mythology of the Naga of Indo-China. The serpents' tendency to raise it's head and guard it's ground made it ideal for placing with hidden treasures and riches as a measure of defense that is hard to remove, which is why Medusa is associated with protection.

Very insightful and informative video. My theory of who the Gorgons were in real life is they were a previously conquered tribe who were lucky enough to be remembered in Greek lore. Perhaps their hairstyle was dreadlocks that can resemble snakes from a distance.

The new intro is amazing - like the intro for Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, both tell a highly visual story.

Amazing video 😊😊😊 I love The Gorgon Sisters. I love that you are give the world the original myths and views of the differnt types of mythology. Being completly honest I don't always like the adaptations of the Greek myths cause mostly they do stuff that make them much different from the original. I really like your channel and hope everything goes well with the book 😊😊😊

Two very good representations of the Gorgon can be found in the movies The Gorgon, and The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao.

The new intro is pretty awesome, also thank you. I've always wondered how you pronounce the names of Medusa's sisters.
@stellafremi6996
@stellafremi6996 4 года назад
the pronunciation in the video is not correct. "Sthe-no" is pronounced with an intonation on "no", and "Euryale" is pronounced "Ev-ri-a-li", with an intonation on "a".
