When Bela plays an innocent character, every time he appears, you're waiting. As the movie goes on, you relax a little, but there's always that possibility that he's going to go dark at some point.
Patsy Kelly being the funniest part in a Ritz brothers film is hardly surprising. Honestly pretty much anyone and even anything that was otherwise present in any of the films starring this trio of a fly-esque merge between the three stooges and the marx brothers managed to do so with magnificent ease as well. They just don't have charcter that is for example with Laurel and Hardy one is dim yet innocent while the other's a cynical hothead here however we have idiot loudmouth times three. Boy does it get old real fast! Thanks for putting this up though it's a real challenge finding the works they've starred in.
As a kid in the 60's, neighborhood mothers took turns carpooling us to the Saturday afternoon movies put on in rural jr. high through the summer - 3 hours of relief for the moms, 3 hours of bedlam for ~50 kids watching The Three Stooges, Abbott & Costello In Africa, Lon Cheney as the bad guy... throwing popcorn and candy until first monster on board :) Great films, great memories:)
I always thought Patsy Kelly was something of a dish. Now that we've seen her in a Ritz Bros comedy, how about showing some of her work with Thelma Todd?
They look like triplets, but they're not. I just discovered this movie about a year ago and I watch it with my grandkids. Before that I had never heard of The Ritz brothers.
Terrific! Of course, the Ritz Brothers were not happy about this script and it led to a split between themselves and Fox, and they moved to Universal in 1940. Harry, (the loud one) was the last to depart our dimension in 1986. Harry and Jimmy both had parts in "Blazing Stewardesses" and "Won Ton Ton The Dog Who Saved Hollywood". Harry's last film was Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie". They got their name from the side of a laundry truck.
I remember seeing this movie on TCM back in 2007/2008. I always thought it was a fever dream. All I could remember from it was that Bela Lugoshi playing the butler, lol. Great horror comedy movie.
Bela is still in his prime . If the dialogue had have been a little more developed and less slapstick it could have been another Arsinic and old Lace. Set is superb. Scooby doo my ghoulies
The mostly low ratings this movie gets are totally unjustified. The general consensus wants us to think the Ritz Brothers aren't funny and that Bela Lugosi is wasted as a butler. Both of these assumptions are wrong. In actuality, this is a well-mounted, well-paced little comedy/horror with top talent both behind and in front of the camera.

Les rité brotheurs n étaient pas des grands et leurs carrières fut très brève. Le gorille est sympathique et leurs meilleurs films en plus il y a bella lugosi . Il n'y a pas dans ce trio a tiré grand chose ils ce sont la plus part du temps faient jetez. Pas d analyses sur eux même a trois ce ne sont pas laurel et hardy ou buster keaton ou chaplin ou même harold loyd . Quand aux max brotheur il ne mon jamai fait rire.

Have to disagree with all the enthusiastic commentaries. I find this movie most disappointing, poorly plotted, cast and produced. Not difficult for Patsy Kelly to steal the comedy spotlight from the Ritz Brothers. Never could figure out how thy managed to make a career of failing to be the least bit funny or entertaining. Two earlier film versions remain lost, but I'm certain they were better and would be most interested in seeing them or the stageplay. Love this type of mystery/comedy, but not this particular effort.
looking at Spanish subtitles, listening to original English: timestamp 0.16.04-0.16.06, "Have a sherry before dinner?" (Voulez (French, not Spanish) un licor de cereza ¿antes de la cena?) Sherry is NOT cherry liqueur! Get better translators! Only a non-native couldconfuse sherry with cherry. Completely different phonemes in English.
