This movie is amazing. It has to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing films I’ve ever seen. Every shot is like being confronted by some kind of ice cream dessert. Plus, this film is insane. A girl in 2014 reads a book written in 1985 about a guy visiting a hotel in 1968 where he was told this story that happened in 1932. Plus, it’s a man telling a story about how he was once told a story.

I''ll be honest, this video in itself was a masterpiece. and even if it was 2 hours long (which I know is almost impossible) i'd still watch the whole thing even if it is in chuncks, too me it doesn't matter what the averge watch time is i'll still take my time and watch it all, I know statistics like that probably matter too you because reasons I as a non-content creator can't begin to comprehend, I still hope that you are able to make this show the way YOU want it, no matter what the audience indirectly wants you to do. Love the video, just want to point out that 4:3 aspect ratio was the standard for movies during the silent era not only for old TV. It's another way for the movie to show time frame and the theme of nostalgia that is so strong in the movie. Keep up the excellent work!

Long time subscriber, first time commenter here. I personally love your style and how different it is from other video essays on RU-vid. A lot of them feel "sterile", like they're trying to get to the point in the clearest and briefest way possible, while I feel like yours have a lot more of a personal touch. I see that some people bag on you for the joke interruptions, but I think that's what makes you stand out (apart from consistently analyzing things very differently than anywhere else online and standing by your opinions, ala TDK and Interstellar). It feels more like a conversation I'm having with a friend. It feels more like Movies WITH Mikey than Mikey talking about movies. Keep it up in 2017, we can do this!

I heard this song for the first time in earnest at lunch today and couldn't help but think of this video and feeling happy.

5 minutes average watch is ridiculous, i don't think i have ever stopped one of your videos before the end. You're one of my favorite film essayists.

Everyone keeps talking about how the last five minutes almost makes them cry. Well I cried. I cry every damn time I come back to see it. Yet I still come back.

I don't understand how anyone can only watch 5 minutes of your videos instead of the whole thing unless it's counting repeat viewings where people are skipping around looking for a specific part.

Hey Mikey, I really want to have an honest discussion with you on your statement that this is the first time the Whimsy of Wes has a rational reason. I don't believe this is the case because each of his films utilizes some mechanic to express the rationality of the whimsy. First, in part due to the detatched nature of all the characters from the normal reality around us, and secondly due to what the story is representing in the form of deliverence. You are spot on with this being a telephone game in this movie. Rushmore was a play, as prescribed by the time curtains showing the passing of acts, as well as the main character creating life to characters through the medium of plays. Hence all the rationale for the films whimsy was directed through a very naive youngster and his obcession with plays. Royal was all about the main characters being literary characters, as a book about a group of genius children through the constant writing done within the movie about the family, ultimately created, destroyed, and reunified through Royal Tennenbaum. The whimsy was not but for the fact that this was a fiction story living within the pages and seen through the gaps and imagination of the reader, played by Alex Baldwin. Life Aquatic was the whimsy of period documentary film adventures, which in themselves show a heavily edited and engaging style, as to reach out to children and keep them awake in class rooms to educate nature. This is always done with over the top orchestration, simplistic naratives, and piecemeal facts. Reaching back to the children that learn about death via shark films in class, we learn about the cycle of life and regrets through a similar medium, but with so much gravity that can not be made to be documented in such means. A paradoxical film study. I could go on saying each film fills out the whimsy as rational through the lens of the characters and their relation to the art itself. He is a meta-artist in the truest sense, always seeking out a different art form and expressing the whimsy and power of that art form through it's translation through the story, characters, and subsequent film ADAPTATION of the orginal fictional form. This is why he is my favourite film maker, each film finds a way to draw me into another art form through my admiration for whimsical tone covering harsh realism. Not unlike an upbeat indie song talking about the hardships of life, it speaks to my soul. I love the episode, I just wanted to express that I think he does this everytime.

Mikey, I watched this video for maybe the 3rd or 4th time today. I want to let you know that right now is probably the hardest time in my adult life, which is really saying a lot. The outro that you did for this video is a great comfort to me. I deeply appreciate it, and I hope that you and all the other folks from filmjoy have peace in your lives.

And four years later...we were making jokes about crossing disasters and horrifying news headlines off our bingo cards because life had become indistinguishable from both satire and horror. Your work is some of the stuff that kept me from despair. So thank you very much for your work, and may you continue to be able to make it.

I've been diving into your library of past episodes (so I might be driving your average watch time up a tad) and it is interesting to see your style mature, evolve, and yet the original material is still interesting. Your comments on the happiness of Zero in that one fleeting moment reminds me strongly of the "Myth of Sisyphus" by Camus. Our whole life is a struggle, but if it is the struggle we chose, then we can be happy, no matter how demeaning to someone else our task is, how repetitive or senseless. There is greatness in you.

I think I need to mention that the aspect ratio that most of the movie is shot in is called 'Academy ratio' and is a film format not a TV format. But one that was shot as the full frame of black and white 33mm. But there's more to this choice of ratio... And now we need to take a detour back to TV. When Ted Turner was originally pitching TCM as a movie channel, he hit on the idea of taking a back catalogue of good movies that were in this format and updating them to be palatable for modern audiences. By 'Colorising' them, with a conversion process that added colour. The process usually resulted in pastel colours made up from a very limited pallet, pinks and cyans being predominant due to their clearer printing. But they could not just stop there, once they started this editing process they became tempted to alter the edit, to make the movies 'better'. And sometimes completely changing the structures and even endings of the movies. "Colorisation" became a term for embellishing movies to make them cheerful and palatable. Now after that detour I want you to consider this. The bulk of Zero's story is in pastel colour with a pink and cyan pallet, and is highly whimsical. The end of Zero's story is in black and white, and brutal.

Can't tell is title of this video is joke I'm not getting or mistake. Either way thanks for another enthralling video! I am literally moved to tears by most of your videos.

I know you are fairly adamant about not allowing your reviews to become, what was it? A Literature dumpster? However, I think considering the context of this movie, and the particular review you gave, a bit more about Stefan Zweig could have been included to give some context of his influence on the film, which reinforces many of your thematic observations: 1. After seeing the movie, I went out and read Beware of Pity and The Post Office Girl (great books btw, highly recommended). Right off the bat, not only were direct passages, characters, and situations and themes* taken right from these books, but the entire dialog of the film SOUNDS like a Stefan Zweig story reads. I mean, W. Anderson NAILED his stylistic narrative voice, which could easily be glossed over because W Anderson's own style meshes almost perfectly. It's really interesting to see the patchwork lifted from these (at least these two) works by Zweig, and how W Anderson's work compliments them and glues them together. 2. Zweig's own life factors heavily into the plot and themes of the movie. Zweig was a popular (Jewish) Austrian author in the time between WWI and WWII, until the forces of fascism began to rise and he was exiled to England, NYC, and eventually Rio de Janeiro, where he was promptly and largely forgotten. As the forces of intolerance and authoritarianism continued to rise, his despair over the future of Europe and European culture grew, until both he and his wife committed suicide. This is important because, in the movie, Zweig was not only represented by both the older and younger fictional authors in the movie, but also by Gustav himself. This gives much more weight to his character, his arc and affectations, and particular lines like these: "You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant... oh, fuck it." "There are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity... He was one of them. What more is there to say?" "To be frank, I think his world had vanished long before he ever entered it. But I will say, he certainly sustained the illusion with a marvelous grace." Given the current world climate, Zweig and his work, represented with great affection by W Anderson in this movie, are more relevant and important than ever. * also heavy on that unreliable narrator tip. "Beware of Pity ", particularly so.

Oh my god this was so good. I remember leaving the theatre after seeing Grand Budapest and that kind of warmth you get from seeing an amazing movie was all over. When you see a movie made by someone who genuinely loves the medium, you can feel it. (Also #BringBackPushingDaisies2018 )

My first watch of this was at home. Normally watching movies at home I take breaks, usually a couple. But this one. I went from sitting back, to the edge of my seat. And after it finished, I started it over again immediately. I love this movie. Id love to see this movie done in a deep dive. Massive breakdown.
