I always look at this movie as the transition point between the "Stuffy" feel of the first movie and the angst-sodden feel of the last few. I've always seen PoA as the comfortable balance between the two extremes.

It's kind of perfect that, even if he hadn't read the books, the tonal shifts Cuaron made matched almost exactly with book's story-telling maturity.

It's funny you mention Marvel going back to a safer, more generic set of directors because I'd argue that Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok, Ryan Coogler for Black Panther and the recently announced Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck for Captain Marvel are a continuation of finding unique voices for their films in the MCU.

I'm majorly biased, since it's my favorite Harry Potter film

Harry hearing the woman screaming (his mom) when he is attacked by Dementors is actually Voldemort's memory, as Dementor attacks force you to relive your worst memory, and the woman screaming is actually Voldemort's memory of dying. Fun facts!

I'm surprised you didn't go into that long shot with Mr. Weasely and Harry. But this film took some turns that most "kid franchises" shy away from.

I'm not a big Harry Potter fan overall, but this is the one Harry Potter film I have watched

I think on a deeper level the movie is about finding happiness in the face of adversity, as Dumbledore says "Happiness can be found Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light". The Lumos scene is representative of that as Harry is struggleing to create light in his dark world that is constantly in surveillance. In fact there are many shots in the movie of Harry looking at his reflection as even Harry's not sure if he fill find happiness with all the shit that keeps happening to him. In the exact midpoint of the movie, it seems as though he's given into the darkness when he woes to kill Sirius. But during the Expecto Patronum scene he understands that only he can bring light into his life when his spell literally creates a light so bright that it brightness up the blue world around him. The movie ends with a freeze-frame on his brightly lit smiling face indicating that he found happiness after all, at least for now.

This movie is what made me want to actually read the books unlike when I saw the first two. I cannot stress the impact this film had on me.

what i love about all this situation is that Guillermo del Toro was the one who convinced Alfonso Cuaron to do the movie, ´cause Cuaron was gonna pass because it was a children´s movie, and he was like 'Do you know anything about harry potter?'

I've been binging this series for a couple days and I love every bit of it! I really enjoy the thoughtfulness you bring to it, and especially how it's always a fresh look, even at movies that have been "covered to death" as it were. Also, I really dig the bill wurtz reference in here!

Vote for Galaxy Quest. Gotta love it, almost as much as you've gotta love that you know Mikey used Phil Collins in this episode because of Mr. Robot

That moment when Snape immediately goes from "I'm going to destroy you little brats" to "I'm momma bear, don't touch my cubs" upon seeing a transformed Lupin. Such a small, but powerful, moment.

Mikey, I'll be honest and say that I wasn't expecting much in the review, but I should've known you'd bring something interesting to the table. The focus on Cuarón rather than the details of the film was what I needed as a viewer. Thanks, and keep up the great work that continues to surprise and impress.
