YEAH!! I just came back to rewatch this after 'The Rotten Fern's Just Deserts' and HOLY GUACAMOLE I forgot just how tragic this story is. Still giving me chills to this day 😭
I'm imagining Cedar started cursing her name when he realised she left, and she's just listening from a distance, having gone to the store to pick up milk, like "definitely bad timing to return"
Cedar: has been alone in a forest digging holes for body's so souls can be reincarnated because "Fern" left Fern: Ayy yo I got the milk let me tell you traffic was awful- Cedar: ō-ō wha- But no really I want to talk about this song. From what I get, Cedar has taken up the job of being a undertaker of sorts. When creatures die, he buries the bodies so that the Earth can use it as a fuel of sorts, and in return the animal gets to be reincarnated, thus continuing the cycle of life in the forest. But, this is a lot of work for one creature to do. The forest has grown darker, meaning that the sun doesn't shine anymore. I think new creatures have infiltrated the forest as well, who are "predictors" of sorts. So now the forest is full of danger, making it hard to do this work. One day, Cedar came across a soul that still looked like a human (Fern). Fern said she didn't know where she was, so, not knowing what to do, Cedar simply let her stay. After a while, they grew closer. Fern came with Cedar on his trips out into the dark to look for bodies. But, one day she felt the need to tell him the truth. She is actually the goddess of reincarnation, who abandoned this land long ago. She was only their to protect Cedar so he could continue his work. Cedar, rightfully furious, confronts her for her past crimes and blames her for the forest's downfall. Not sure what happens after, or why Fern left, but I'm sure we will find out in the future. There is most likely incorrect points and holes in my theory, but I might update it later if I find anything else. Love the song!!!
Lyrics: When the night falls I wake to start my job With my shovel and my lantern I look for bodies Searching for souls in the lividity Then burying the corpse to feed the forest as it rots Today I found a soul different from the rest A girl with an innate connection to heaven and earth Even in death she's riddled with unrest And I'm taken aback by how brightly her soul burns "Hello sir, My name is Fern. I am from Middle Earth. I don't know where I am Please, sir, Help me if you can." Her arms sway in the breeze Carefully, gently I take her by the hand and tell her what I can Come along, Fern, the night will treat you well The trees are calling, their cries an eerie chill Death is long, but the afterlife's longer And if you leave, then you will forever wander When the night falls I wake to start my job With my shovel and my lantern I look for bodies As of recent I'm no longer alone The bizarre spirit Fern likes to search for them with me Today, Fern says she has something to tell me The world's in danger and she was sent here to protect me I don't know why but I choose to believe I get my spirits up and let myself be naive "Hello, sir, for what it's worth My name's not really Fern I had to lie to you For you would hate the truth." Her eyes are watering Faltering, altering All she can do is cry Looking up at the sky God, I hate you, I can't believe it's true I'm crying out, "Oh, I can't believe it's you." You, the reason the forest runs dark now You're nothing to me and I'll tell you why, oh One thousand years you left us to decay And then you come back By donning a new name Death is long but your damage lasts longer I trusted you and now I don't know what to do
I was going through your account bc I used to listen to you constantly and I was like 'Hm I wonder if they have any new songs!!!" And then I saw this and I was like :( 4 comments?? Thats not right.. Cause appsrently you JUST posted this and I just- coincidences are funky
Bro this is underrated. I luv this song so much. Maybe one day I'll do a cover of this. I showed this to my parents and my dad is scared but i think my mom liked it xd.
Okay so, this song is a HECKING BOP, the day it came out, i listened a solid 15 times in a row (i counted) and im still listenging every day or so. And two, thank you so much, because this song gave me inspiration to create two very important characters in my original story!
Another song that reminds me my heart’ still Pump(k)in full of life. More seriousness; I enjoy it. It’s good in how it captures both perspectives, that’s important, and you got it in.
Listening to this and it's sequel made me realize that one is just the sped up version of the other (in terms of beat) and I love that connecting detail so much ❤❤❤
hello im back from listening to The Rotten Fern's Just Deserts and damn this is just as good as the first time i listened to it, absolutely amazing job, keep it up!!
This is so beautiful omg omg!! The song is beautiful and the art is so great oh geez! The pv is so so great??? I lov the tunning as well its really good Oliver tunnin which I appreciate very muchhh
PART ONE IS AMAZING TOO HOLY FU- but honestly, how would i expect anything less i love the similar tune between pt 1 and 2, but the slight differences make it all the more better and sad once again, this is amazing!! the designs and art is just amazing i hope to see more of your amazing songs in the future
Ok first of all, fuck you RU-vid for not notifying me, I SWEAR I didn't see this........ With that BULLSHIT out of the way..... Cedar is adorable and must be protected, but that cliffhanger........ AHHHHHH I can't wait to know #-# anyway so as always your Oliver tuning is just BEAUTIFUL and the song itself sounds AMAZING, haunting but not to the point of being terrifying, it's juts kinda melancholic and I LOVE it, also if I could choose a nickname I would love to be called Fern, it's literally part of my name but people tend to call me Feh or something else, but Fern is way much better than Feh imo #-#
Vocaloids are a little weird and don't pronounce everything the same way as other Vocaloids of the same language, and when you tune Vocaloids you can manually edit how they pronounce things
It's a modernization of the word Middangeard. I'm pretty sure it was coined by j.r.r tolkein but it usually means the land inhabited by mortal beings, called middle because it's between heaven and hell
Unironically I saw Middle Earth in LOTR and then saw it in a couple other fantasy novels and was like "Alright if we're all yoinking that concept then I will too"
