Just like the 30-06. The 50 year difference in innovation allowed the 308 to be safely loaded to 30-06 speeds. What is interesting about both 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 is both were designed to have increased rates of fire, which is why their barrels had a more moderate twist rate and lighter bullets than their predecessor the 30-06, moving from precision to spray and pray. Fortunately both have moved back toward precision and perform well in that role.

@williamgaines9784

@@ryanglass3570 True. A max load 30-06 should beat a max load .308 every time, because of greater case capacity, even non-max as proportionally more powder space is available Same when comparing any of the .30 caliber "magnums". My point was that the military loads were basically the same in down range performance between the two using a smaller case and shorter action.

I've been using a .308 since 1979 when I was given Grandpa's Winchester model 88 after his passing. It shoots 180g power points extremely well and I've taken many Deer with it over the years. Within reasonable distance it's got plenty of oomph!!!

Thanks for an interesting and informative post about one of my favourite cartridges. I am sending you this from Ontario in Canada to let you know I love the way you deliver your work...clear and pleasant voice and not all unpleasant presentation as I have found with some who fill up their videos with too much irrelevant talk and/or noisy sound effects or rock style music. LOL! I am 88 so I guess I am getting too old and cantankerous eh Dave! So keep up the great work mate and I will be watching. If I might suggest posting sometime a comparison between my three favourite cartridges...the .270 Winchester, the .308 and .243.I would love to hear and see used out on the range in the comparison, some of your best hand-loads for each of the above. Take care now and God bless you and yours!

Thanks for your kind words and your well earned wisdom. The 3 cartridges you mention are iconic indeed, but as a hunter the only comparison I can make is to match them to the size of the game I maybe hunting. Although each cartridge may carryover to the same size game, only you know what you are specifically hunting and which you would find the best use for. Thanks for watching

The best rifle, cartridge and bullet are what works for you. I'm Canadian, we have thick woods in Ontario and I've never had to shoot over 200 yards. I only have one rifle and it does everything for me. R700 CDL in .308 Win with 150 grain for deer, coyote, wolf and 180 grain for elk, moose and black bear. I use Federal Fusion bonded soft point for everything, it gives me immediate expansion, near perfect weight retention and deep penetration for double lung shots. Half the price of Nosler Partition too and it takes down moose and elk just the same. If I was living out west in Alberta and shooting at longer distances then I'd definitely want a 30-06 or 300 win.

I own a number of different rifles chambered in everything from 22-250 Remington to 300 Win Mag but when I need to reach into my gun safe for a rifle I instinctively reach for the 308 Win. There is just something about that short action cartridge that fits me like a glove. The rifles have perfect balance and are really comfortable to carry in the field. The short bolt throw also feels more natural to me than my other long action rifles. For Elk size game and larger I will reach for the 300 Win Mag or the 7 mm Rem Mag but for everything else the 308 Win is my first choice.

I like your videos because you treat firearms with care. Not like toys a lot of tacticool people do. Maybe it's me coming from a hunting background. Where as we counted on that meat for the winter. That's why the cold barrel one shot to me is so important. That means the difference between a clean kill or bad shot or miss. Which could be the only shot I had all season.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
Yes, Eli...First shot maybe the only shot needed, but we need to know if there is a point of impact shift on the second shot if needed.

Dave, I think I found your channel researching these Federal 110 Varmint loads after seeing them on the shelf. Your shooting sold me. Picked up 2 boxes online cheaper. So sometimes in wider open fields I brought along the 308 with these 110s for the yotes but didn't see any on those couple of stands. I keep bringing out my 20 y/o Model 10 in 22-250 for most stands, but this weekend I'm giving the AR15 223 a chance. Hopefully back before the big game.

Hey Brian. Because of the cartridge's age circa 1930. Load data is based upon old cordite type powders with low pressure tolerances. But mine is loaded modern and is equal to a 300 win mag. and is more accurate. Great cartridge indeed.

Have been considering buying another rifle caliber and .308 Win is shaking out to be it. As for action type, it comes in every imaginable one, so am going to ponder that further. I think that last 150 giving you feed trouble was a cause of your more open group, altered your focus from the target to the clunkiness of the action. Looking forward to the next episode.

The action on Savage 10/110 is actually normally pretty sloppy. We have a 110 FCPK in a McMillan A5 that shoots cloverleafs. CFE223 is a bit of a fast powder and with Savage’s notoriously loose chambers, it’s probably brass smearing the chamber throat due to high pressure. Slow those 150 SSTs down to 2850 FPS with something like AA2460 or H4064 and you’ll see .75 moa all day.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 2 месяца назад
Thanks for your input here. The rifle shoots better than I do. I have tested Varget w/150's and it does give the velocities that you mention. For Hunting, I do like speed and with CFE-223, I usually do get 2,980 fps w/o pressure signs and sub MOA.
@nohandle257
@nohandle257 Год назад
The rifle makers in concert with the ammo manufacturers should think about a 308 Precision Rifle Cartridge. Lengthen a more precise chamber for longer higher BC bullets. But then we already have the 7mm 08 and 6.5 PRC which is what I traded in my 308 for. Prolly wouldn't sell. But then if the recoil was still less than the 300 PRC . . . .
