In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary.
It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war.
Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) - THE GREAT ESCAPER celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.

I watched this the day it was released and I was literally in bits, I actually found myself fighting back the tears as I walked home such is how powerful, meaningful and deep this film is. Sir Michael and the late great Glenda Jackson, you both truly played an excellent part in a film that should be shown the world over. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. They Shall Grow Not Old As We That Are Left Grow Old, Age Shall Not Weary Them Nor The Years Condemn, At The Going Down Of The Sun And In The Morning, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM 🫡

What a grand cinematic farewell to the legendary Glenda Jackson. She had talent in spades and with Michael Caine by her side how could this movie possibly fail to be a hit. It Is, & It's Awsome !!!

The two people this film is based on both died within a few months of this event. In addition sadly Glenda Jackson died months before the film was released.
