#TheGreatEscaper - In Cinemas Now
In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary.
It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war.
Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) - THE GREAT ESCAPER celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.

Young lads who fought on opposite sides of the same battlefield meeting as old men 70 years later. Beautiful.

As an army veteran looking forward to this with two fantastic Oscar winning British actors. One small technical point. The correct salute once learned is never forgotten. Michael was an army veteran in the Korean war. So, here he employs his drilled in him Army salute. However, he is playing a navy man in the movie and their salute is not flat of hand facing forward but rather, facing down to the ground. Small technical point, in an otherwise, I believe, we'll told story.

Good to know Father was a Navy man and was a stoker, was also on a support ship on D Day and did the Arctic Crossings at least he was warm.

I thought exactly the same thing. Maybe the producer/director thought him saluting differently would look strange, but I spent 40 years in the "blue suit" (my Navy, RAN) and I (like any sailor)will never salute any other way than "our way"; that is, hand over right eyebrow, angled 45 degrees to the deck. But concur, small point; I can't wait to see this movie.

@@KJs581 There is an alternative shot used in some trailers and a poster that shows the correct naval salute - I guess they picked what looked like the better of the takes

I watched this today it was very well made. Poor Glenda Jackson died before it was released. The cinema was small but almost full.

The British cemetery scene had me in tears because it brought back powerful memories of my grandfather making almost the same comment when my dad and I took him to Normandy on the 50th anniversary.

Probably because today's generation expect hero's to have supernatural powers or big tits and preferably both. True hero's as depicted here are beyond their understanding.

@@gillie-monger3394 more because the movie was very under marketed. As a younger veteran i didn't even know that the movie existed before finding it at random on a streaming platform and i was literally moved to tears by it

@gillie-monger3394 8 месяцев назад
@@balinthehater8205 I agree about the promotion being 'under the radar'. I couldn't understand why. I mean, it has two of the greatest actors Britain has ever produced and the subject matter is one of remembrance and compassion for all who took part in the war. Maybe the last few generations would rather forget about the wars and the bravery of those who fought. I know quite a ew '20 somethings' who don't know a thing about WWI or II, or indeed that there was ever a World War or that matter!

this was such a fantastic movie. the final scene brought a tear to my eye. the absolute perfect swansong of Michael Caine's career. I'm absolutely bowled away that he chose to come back to my home town of Hastings too (he did another movie there a long time ago). I must've walked up that same pavilion a thousand times.

What I found poignant about this this is that Michael Caine (age 90), John Standing (age 89), and Wolf Kahler (age 83) were in a film together, The Eagle has Landed, in 1976. It really is a reunion of friends and colleagues. 🥲

Really enjoyed the film but noticed that in the Bayeux Cemetery scene that some of the trees were very red implying autumn colours. As this was supposed to be the 70th anniversary of D-Day on 6th June, it must have been a very early autumn in 2014!!

Glad to see they forgave and made peace with each other despite being mortal enemies on both sides in ww2. Germany and Britain are Brothers in Arms in NATO now and glad they are. Germany may never fully recover from the horrors of the Nazis in ww2 and East Berlin and The Stasi but she can build a better future.
