The Great Mouse Detective | Disney's Most Underrated Classic
During the Disney Dark Ages, lackluster films popped out left and right. But in the middle, a gem was made that set the stage for the Disney Renaissance. Although it generally gets positive reviews, it's still not held to as high of esteem as it probably should, with only an 81% by critics and 79% by general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
This movie was the Great Mouse Detective, and today we'll be looking into why it stands with the greatest Disney classics.
Great Mouse Detective Cast:
Barrie Ingham as Basil of Baker Street
Val Bettin as Dr. David Q. Dawson
Vincent Price as Professor Ratigan
Susanne Pollatschek as Olivia Flaversham
Candy Candido as Fidget
and Frank Welker as Toby

Henry Mancini did the score, nuff said. Vincent Price said Ratigan was one of his favorite roles. He was having the time of his life devouring the scenery. The animators said they copied a lot of Price's moves.

It really is a shame that it didn't get as much love when it originally came out, seeing as it is one of my favorites. I feel like the plot is pretty solid, and the characterization really sells the movie-- as both the antagonists and protagonists are fully engaging. I ended up reading the Basil of Baker Street books years ago, and I was actually surprised when Ratigan wasn't actually a rat in the series. Honestly, there were a lot of changes Disney made which I think were for the better-- as the movie gives Basil way more depth than a Sherlock Holmes knock-off.
@hollywoodruinseverything4654
@hollywoodruinseverything4654 6 лет назад
Hm, that's rather interesting. I haven't read the Basil of Baker Street books. I think that Disney should attempt to do more movies in the vein of this one. Not necessarily about detectives, but having great characterization and a tone unique to the movie.

@@hollywoodruinseverything4654 14:49: What you said about Olivia? That's a cold hard fact. She makes Chris Thorndyke look like a moron for leaving behind his life on Earth, and Sage from Sonic Frontiers look nothing more than the empty vessel she is. I mean, if I were to make Chris Thorndyke into a proper audience surrogate like Olivia here, I'd remove any mention of him being born to a rich family, and instead be an android son of Robotnik... but, unlike Sage, who is just there with no development, Chris Robotnik would've been more like Lil' Bad Wolf from the Walt Disney Comics and Stories; a character who is related to a villain, but the child in question is not evil. Even being manipulated into believing his father would actually reform, only for the child to course correct his mistake. As for a "Moral" on Great Mouse Detective, I can think of one: Find the best you that you can be, and never be afraid to fight against what you believe is the right thing.

Rattigan is such a great villain. Ruthless and intelligent but his insecurity regarding his image gives him a more respectable flaw unlike cowardice or stupidity. Rattigan is also the villain with the best facial expression of any other disney villain. How marvelously they portrayed his twisted mentality through those amusing facial expressions. And voiced by Vincent Price to boot.

And to think "The Great Mouse Detective" is my number 1 in Disney movies. This movie was part of my childhood since the beginning as I remember. It also made me get interested on Detective stories such as Sherlock Holmes, (obviously) Hercule Poirot, Jane Marple, Murder she wrote, Diagnosis Murder, Kommissar Rex, etc. And of course Detective Conan. This movie is so underrated. This is one of the movies that kept Disney magic up during its "Dark age". Give some gredit, people!
@robbiewalker2831
@robbiewalker2831 Год назад
Detective Conan made me lose interest for steering away from the cause of the problem. "The Great Ace Attorney" catched my interest much quicker. Why? Because Sherlock Holmes is in it. Granted, he had a name change, but it's still Sherlock, if you saw the Japanese release.

Definitely one of my favorite all time animated movies. The story, music, characters, protagonist, antagonist are all really good. Disney should recognize it all because thanks to this movie they avoided bankruptcy. Yes this movie saved Disney, not The Little Mermaid, that was just the success they needed to create the 90’s golden age of animation for the company. At least this movie has aged well.

This is my favorite Disney movie! And, regarding 16:51, I think there is a message that can be taken from this movie, and it has to do with accepting yourself for who you are and being the best you that you can be. Ratigan doesn't accept himself the way he is, denying even his own species, trying to be someone that he's not. On the other hand, Basil embraces who he is, works with his flaws without changing them, and is the best Basil he can be without adhering to anyone else's ideas of who he should be. And in the end, Ratigan's schemes fail, and Basil is a hero. Might not necessarily be a message that the people who made the movie were intending to send, but I think it's there if you look for it.

This animated mouse film about Victorian England with a Sherlock Holmes character with Watson, that despite being a children's film it has murder, a asasination plot, a villan that turns into a scary creature in the end, the only disney burlesque scene and beer and a scary bat scene in the begining....what a film sad there wasn't a sequal!

Fun Fact about the scene at 5:57 that is actually a recording of a Sherlock Holmes radio program starring none other than Basil Rathbone, an actor who played Sherlock Holmes from 1939-1946 and who Basil is named after! He was considered the best SH until Jeremy Brett dethroned him.

You'd think it'd be easy to come up with another mystery... but I also know it would be very difficult to make a sequel for this movie. After all, Vincent Price as Professor Ratigan is a hard villain to top, and the tone and feel of this movie is very different from most Disney movies. I'm not sure they'd be able to replicate it today, which is very sad. Sherlock Gnomes? Is that what that gnome movie is? Bleh. Anyways, thanks!

Lizafoot For5 You might consider reading the source material on which this is based if you want further stories, basically Basil is Sherlock Holmes' double in most respects (which in no way lessens the character or this film I might add, it's a fine tip of the hat to the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the further adventures penned by his son, Adrian.) As to film/tv adaptations, I would highly recommend the works starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes.

I think it's fair to point out that The Fox and the Hound and Oliver & Company weren't financial failures for Disney. The Fox and the Hound generated a nice gross and had okay reviews at the time of its release. Also, while having a mixed reception, Oliver & Company generated more than $130 million dollars in the box office on a modest budget. The rest is very on point, though. The Great Mouse Detective is arguably one of Disney's most underrated animated features and I wish it got more recognition than it did.

Hollywood Ruins Everything Despite its fairly critical and financial success at the box office after the flops of Fox and the Hound and Black Cauldron it is deemed to be dark for kids. The bar scene, Big Ben chase, and Ratigan’s mentions of crimes are the reasons why it tends to be underrated and dark for kids. Ratigan did appear in the novel of Descendants 3.

I really do wonder how Rattigan _is_ a Professor. I feel like he only uses such a title as a _status_ symbol, to flaunt his intelligence. But I highly doubt that he has any ability of being a _public figure._ During the scene where he presents himself as the new _Royal Consort_ the crowd is visibly _horrified_ of him, and the child even openly mocks him. So does this mean that he has a disreputable reputation? How could he - Considering that Basil has been trying to link him to several crimes over the years, but has never found sufficient enough evidence to arrest him? So it's likely that - much like Moriarty - the greater public is largely ignorant of the atrocities he's committed. So I suppose that just leaves the fact that he's a _rat._ But does that mean that he suffers from an unjust prejudice by the greater community? Or are Rats actually deemed as dangerous in this society? - given Rattigan's volatile temper and his rabid transformation at the end of the film, I'd say that the mistrust is entirely called-for. So all of this begs the question; how could he possibly be a "Professor"? What is he a Professor of? Is his title anything other than just a nickname?

This is such a enjoyable movie, I like the tone of it a lot and it has such a nice calm pace to it that I miss SO much in todays animation even from other countries. Tropes you mentioned they don´t do in this is only one of the examples I like it. And that a lot of one shot characters have a lot of personalities yes and some of them don´t even speak. I think a lot of movies thend to over do it or feel like they have to revisit a character. Let´s take Zootopia which I do like BTW the weasel charcter. They did´t not need to have him again in the movie, now it did make sense in the story but other movies tend to do that without or with forced reasons. The music oh it is one of the more exciting music Disney ever put out. I like the humor a lot and all the cracy stuff in it. And yes Toby is a good sidekick dog yet not overused or goofy. Olivia is a good kid character. Funny thing even if they try to emphatise that she is a girl by having her wear pink on the covers I thought she was a scottish boy all the time as a kid.

Yes! I agree this the is the most underrated Disney classic, I mean it's not in my top 10, but I ranked it as one of the good Disney films despite the fact that it's often ranked as one of the weak ones. I mean, they had a good story, good characters, the torture of Dawson and Basil was good, as well as the final battle. I'm putting it as one of the good ones, there are 60 Disney classics now, and I put it in 24th place, but it's still one of the good ones. I don't exactly feel this movie could have started the Disney renaissance, but I thought it was better than some of the movies from there. It was definitely better than the Rescuers Down Under, which is a weak Disney classic. I also thought it was better than Pocahontas, Hunchback and Tarzan, and I thought those three were just ok. Now, Little Mermaid started the renaissance, and that was one of Disney's best films. Yes! I also think Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin or Lion King if they were before Little Mermaid they also would have started the Renaissance. All four of those movies are actually in my top 5, including Jungle Book, I know Jungle Book isn't as popular as those other 4, but I loved it, and it might be able to start the Renaissance if the company had been struggling. So, I put Great Mouse Detective as one of the good Disney classics, it's true I don't think it's nearly as good as some of the other Disney classics, but it's definitely worth checking out.
