Growing up in North Carolina we and my grandfather planted and harvested potatoes for our families .We used to store them in what we called the potato shack which was an little old storage building. We had a bin with a rabbit wire bottom for ventilation and we placed old rugs on top that were not fit for the house to insulate them over the winter. By the time potatoe planting season came back around some of the potatoes had softened and started to rot. We picked the remainder which had grown some decent sprouts out of the eyes and cut them into sections each with a sprout and planted them sprout up for another harvest

That potato museum tour was really a treat, thank you! I live in a town where a Century plus ago, the potato was the first cash crop of choice after the lumberjacks moved on to another forest. As recently as 70 years ago, the potato harvests stopped becoming a thing for some reason or another, and the area remained as traditional farm country. Seeing some of that machinery, just reminded me of some of the farmers who still had that equipment, but just left to nature.

I just saw a recipe that fits the theme of this video - which looks delicious by the way. Sliced about 3-4mm thick, potatoes are layered with swiss cheese and vegan bacon bits, garlic 'butter' and a little seasoning in cups of muffin tins. Baked under foil and then a bit more cheese after the foil removal and broiled. Yum. And ditto to @croberts709 comment about how beautifully you showcase all of North America but this was lovely.

I bought bottom land years ago & the soil was black & rich.. I had 7 acres which I farmed... The 1st yr I planted a patch of potato's & they were big & plentiful.. As organic veggies gained popularity , I had a local store chain contact me because my uncle supplied green beans for the 3 stores.. So I planted a full acre to start... Being organic , I could'nt use pesticides or weed killer.. So , I & my girls went out everyday & removed potato bugs & pulled any weeds.. The crop was fantastic... But it was the last time I grew them for the public... Its far too time consuming & potato's , at that time , didnt pay near enough for all the labor... Still today I can buy potato's way cheaper than I can grow them ... But, I know my potato's are not GMO or full of pesticides ...

I was there 5 years ago and the internet I had counted on at my lodging was worthless. I was spending down my Canadian cash before driving back to the states. Hey Slim! We enjoyed your video. We grow sweet potatoes around here. Sweet potatoes aren’t related to Irish potatoes but are native to the tropics. We have found that they grow very well in the south. After they are dug, they are cured in a warm barn for about two weeks. All of that flavorless starch turns to a wonderful sweetness that can’t be beat. There are some varieties that do produce in colder climates and possibly even Canada.

Back in the '60s i was a child growing up in idaho. Now my dad could fix anything and that included tvs . A lot of people would call us up for him to come fix their tv, but many couldnt pay for it so he would just do it for free. My mom didnt like that tho and she let him know that he was providing a service and should be compensated for it. Lets face it, a lot of people took advantage of his good nature. So he would still go out but now he would normally bring back some money for his service. One day he went out to a farm to fix a tv. Took him a long time to come home. So when he did , he came in all sad, and told my mom he didnt have money. She was getting ready to scold him and he ran out to the car and brought in a huge gunny sack and put it in front of my mom. She opened it and pulled out HUGE russet baking potatoes. She was beyond happy and said that those were better than money any day.

From another great potato place, Maine, you got "Kennebec" right, but the other one is pronounced Suh-BAY-go. We nearly shut down all the McDonalds in Maine when they started buying Idaho potatoes. They relented and now serve Maine taters. Of course, potatoes are kind of like corn, they're best if you've got a pot of boiling water waiting at the end of the row you're picking.

In the 1950's, we used to get all our produce from a local farmer. He wouldn't let us take home the corn with the other veggies, but instead, asked what time supper was, and he'd hand deliver the corn 15 minutes prior to the meal being served so it wouldn't lose any of its flavor. (PS Never had a tomato since with so much flavor. )
