The Great Potential of the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic

A Discussion around the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic (2021) now with a METAS Master Chronometer rating, newly introduced ceramic case and slightly updated design. Will it popularise the ceramic sports watch? Is it showing manufacturers that ceramic watches can be made more affordable for the masses? Is its movement technology going to rival its competitors? This watch shows a lot of potential.

Correction: METAS standards are 0 to +5 (not +2 -2)

I appreciate the METAS direction Tudor is heading. I own the GMT, and never had an issue with accuracy, but the anti magnetism and shock protection are useful additions, particularly in a travelers watch with all the magnetic fields in an airport / plane
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy 3 года назад
@@btyc It's really exciting. I have fallen head over heels with Omega and their movement standards and if Tudor can implement the same (hopefully with slightly slimmer cases in the future) They'll smash it. There was mention in the comments that Tudor is saying all of their movements will fall under this METAS rating in future
@chrisstevenson2622

METAS sounds to be more strict than COSC. This means you are getting a better (more accurate) movement than Rolex at a more reasonable price point.

@@ID-Guy Question…. I want to Tudors website and they state their movements are COSC certified and no mention of METAS. From a quick Google search, it appears METAS is a higher standard than COSC. Am I incorrect in this??

Which to me isn't really that big of a deal. I have at least seven watches in my modest collection of Breitlings Omega's Rolex and Tudor that all run within +6. I'll add that other than the Rolex's none are 5/6 K USD. But I agree this is a bold move into an interesting material. I finally added Ceramic to my family with the Bathyscaphe with the Blue dial. I know it doesn't fit in this discussion due to the price point.

Definitely a shot across the bow at Omega. You'd have to think this is their strategy for the upcoming future. How much of the market can we ( tudor) take from them. Considering the price advantages, quite a bit, I'd say. Now lets see this ceramic in the 58 size case!

According to an interview, the Marine Nationale announcement could still be happening. The French Navy seems to allow their groups of personnel to commission watch brands for military use so long as they are not commercially available or production run. For those who want to have a full public run of a watch in collaboration with MN will have to apply for a license. With a rigorous array of test to attain a license, we can see both Yema and Tudor gaining the MN seal much like how METAS and COSC would be.

@@ssdc2 I’m curious how a ceramic watch case would hold up to really hard daily wear. That all depends on where they put the quality. I don’t expect a tool watch designed for hard daily wear to have high polished edges or even a clear case back. I want a watch that will work under the most inhospitable conditions and keep going no matter what. They have returned to what a tool watch really is. A tough reliable watch with zero frills.
@chrisstevenson2622
@chrisstevenson2622 3 года назад
When I send a watch in for servicing I would put in instructions NOT to polish out the bumps, scratches or scrapes. It’s those things that allows a watch to tell the story of the watch and the wearer. Plus, it builds character. Sadly, watches have become fashion jewelry pieces instead of being the tool watch they were originally designed to be. I do wonder as to why watch makers haven’t embraced tritium and drop the traditional lume.

Sorry for the second post. The more I look at this watch and understand it, the more impressed I am. I really like the polished bevel on the ceramic case - it really pops and provides design consistency within the Black Bay line. At last the new display back makes sense - it was pretty feckless on the gold and silver Black Bay 58s. And it makes sense that the ceramic came out as a Black Bay rather than a Pelagos because Tudor couldn't have released this watch at US$4,725 under the Pelagos umbrella. While I prefer a date complication and bracelet, this is a compelling package with a solid value proposition. Let's see what accessibility is like.

What does the recent releases (chrono, silver, ceramic) say about Tudor inside the Rolex group ? What could result is having a sister brand with a lesser overall less brand perception appearing more innovative and audacious ? Will Rolex feel the need to catch up at some point, is Tudor used as a testing ground for Rolex, or it is a way for Rolex to compete with other brands like Omega or Zenith on these new grounds ?

ceramic finishing is very hard to do and most ended up becoming dull. The scratch resistance(and fragility) is the very problem itself when it comes to using ceramic in a watch. The prototype watches tends to be WAY WAY better than what the product is since some companies brought watches that they didn't promise to make because they dont have the technology

I really like the experimentation with new material by Tudor. Maybe we could expect something from Rolex in 2-5 years if the trend continues and proves successful. I like the look of the watch, even though I am not a huge fan of ceramic unless in a very “heavy hitter” as the AP openworked, as it may look a bit cheap, perhaps similar to a black plastic fashion watch. I wish it came in the 58, as I a way bigger fan of the 58 than the normal BB. To summarize my opinion: wouldn’t buy it, but am a fan of the experimentation and it doesn’t look too shabby.

Why the long text above 6, it's not needed at all. The bezel material is different than the case, why 41mm, I rather go for the IWC Ceratanium Chrono, it cost more because it's more of a watch and it's also a tool watch just like this one. Maybe, just maybe things might change if I see it on the metal. I just had way to many watches test get boring within the first few months of ownership lately.

This one is not for me... I am still waiting (and VERY excited) for the 39mm regular BB58. I really thought (when it was mentioned to me) that they would be releasing a Coke GMT - a good guess, but I guess not. I like the Pepsi of all them, but, am holding out for a Rolex Pepsi on Oyster.

@@IDKline Indeed, you're probably right. I didn't mean it in that way. I think it's being aimed at Rolex/Tudor fans that also like that look. Rolex itself will probably never make any production watch like that. but there are fans that would love to see it so this is a neat solution. Without a radical change to the Marquee line.

yet Omega spent the last decade pushing prices into Rolex range. Remember the sub-4k$ Speedmaster ? I love this sunburst black dial...and also love the BB58, even though I'd take one with mercedes hand (and get a blue Sub with full square index + snowflake hand). @@MasterSam85 I think Omega's price increases are a mistake. Take the 41mm Constellation. They should be offering a steel bracelet and not just a rubber/leather strap. Kind of a half hearted effort. I would expect more at their higher price levels.

And apart from the marketing what do Rolex do better than Omega, certainly not the watch itself which are far inferior? Superlative chronometer lol, a self certification holds no merit. I've an Oris that cost £1k that holds 1 second a day.

wow! Quite amazing! Amazing that they made a diver watch with a bezel you can't really read due to color choice, depth and thickness of those indices. Not only that, but no pip. Thank God it comes with an exhibition case some of us don't care about it, as the back case sits... (surprise, surprise!) on the wrist! What a joker =) Thumbs up for the video!

I asked Tudor via Instagram if they were going to put METAS certified movements in their other models, their response was that ALL of their manufacture movements would qualify for the METAS certification if they chose to test them. I am not a fan of ceramic cases in sport watches, would not feel confident in its impact resistance.

This new ceramic watch is a larger chunkier Black Bay variant, not the smaller Black Bay 58 🤷‍♂️ and this is not a proper dive watch anymore, due to the lack of a lumed dive bezel pip.

@@MrCheesetastic still, it should be true to its tool watch origin and that includes a bezel lume pip. I don’t think it would of spoiled the black out aesthetic that much as the dial indices have normal (not grayed out like in that latest Omega diver) lume.
