The real heroes of the Superman story are John and Martha Kent. They were able to raise a god-like child into a fundamentally decent, humble, and good man with a steadfast desire to help others. They were the ones to instill those virtues and values into him, and the fate of the Earth was saved many times over as a result of their good parenting.
The great thing about Superman TAS and JL was the fact they were still alive. Other adaptations tend to kill one of them off. I grew up reading John Byrne's Superman and got used to the fact The Kents were still alive.
"Do me a favor and lose the sense of humor." "Do us both a favor and buy one." If that isn't the most organic tense Bats and Supes dialogue I don't know what is.
@@Montesama314 "That was my best friend...and you just killed him!" Proceeds to thrash Luthor despite having been severely weakened by Kryptonite blasts and punches moments earlier.
THIS is the Superman I grew up on! The Superman where Lois doesn't know who he really is and doesn't believe that someone as "meek" and "dorky" as Clark Kent could ever possibly be the Man of Steel himself.
To me Superman is at his best when he’s the big blue Boy Scout. Not all heroes need to be down to earth and relatable. Some of them just need to be ideals that folks should strive for and to me Superman is just perfect for that when it comes to DC. Yes, we need heroes who deal with real life issues, but we also need a man who can flick a hole through a planet and still happily be gentle enough to help an old lady across the street. That’s just my 2 cents. Spend it how you will.
I disagree with the notion that superman isnt relatable he is probably THE most relatable character 1. He isnt perfect and is pretty naive, to be perfect is to not be human but clark is THE most human character ever 2. Whenever he takes an L or whenever he has struggles, what does he do? Turn to the people he trusts and loves, who cant relate to that? 3. He isnt just an "inspiration" just because he's good, he also gets inspired by others, by his fellow heroes, by jimmy, by his parents, by lois lane ALL of these things people have or had done in there life no matter where u live or who they are thats what makes him superMAN because everyone can relate to these things at a fundemental level
Perfect dichotomy: 'Do us both a favor, buy one.' vs 'For what it's worth, I don't think you could have taken Batman either'. Hard slam to high praise.
Superman is undoubtedly Batman's best friend. Alfred is his father figure, Nightwing his son, Gordon is a friend from work, but Superman is his honest to god brother, I love their friendship, it's the best duo in comic history if you ask me
@Cody Hines - I completely agree with you. *Superman Vs. The Elite* is a fantastic movie. It's the Superman that got me back on track to paying attention to Superman and realizing that he is a fantastic superhero. I'd rank the film next to Richard Donner's *Superman The Movie.* Both are great films.
Easily one of the best they’ve put out. His characterization from All-Star Superman, Justice League: Doom and the Braniac short from Gods and Monsters are also really damned solid.
@@tylermcneeley3136 I think he's referring to the fact that between the two sides of the primary argument of Superman vs The Elite, the movie itself ultimately sides with Superman's way of thinking. However, the movie clearly shows that both viewpoints have merits and flaws.
As a kid growing up in Nigeria in the 2000s, Superman was the first hero I was introduced to and he is also the most recognized superhero in my country. My dad bought me the Reeve movies and the Fleischer cartoons on VHS and I also discovered the Bruce Timm animated series (Superman and Justice League). I love his heroism, his uplifting worldview, kindness, humility and his good morals. That made me an instant superman fan and I remain one to this day. When I emigrated to north America and got into comic books, I was surprised at how different he was than I remembered ad then the awful Zack Snyder movies came out and I just checked out. Turning him into a cynic and glorified weapon of destruction is such an insult. These days I don't read American comics but I still watch the DVD of the Bruce Timm cartoons.
Yeah zack should be banned from writing superman stories for the rest of his days. It was basically injustice but without the justification. So the Kents and Clark were all just selfish assholes. I don't even like that he doesn't say " I fight for truth, justice and the american way" anymore lol and I was reading him from Ireland, but modern American writers are just far too cynical to understand the concept of superman. Which is a shame, the world could use more optimistic hero's again
@@Lauren007E I wholeheartedly agree with you, because the real world is already way too cynical. Superman is meant to represent very important to maintain in life to give it meaning & restore people’s faith in humanity… HOPE! That is definately something Zach Snyder doesn’t understand, on top of the modern writers. Clark Kent is meant to be a warm-hearted country boy who stands for doing the right thing, just because he wants to (NOT because other people tell him to). Instead of the American way, he could stand for “TRUTH, JUSTICE, & A BETTER TOMORROW” instead, to better represent the hope he stands for. ❤
@@georgeeastwood6930I disagree. While I agree that the tone of the movie is meant to represent the more cynical world and what would happen if Superman existed in it, there is still that fundamental hope in the movie. My favorite part being the world engines destruction.
Man, that scene gives me chills to this day. The dubbing here changed the last lines before the punch, and, tbh, i feel like they gave more impact: “what we have here is a rare oportunity for me to let loose end show you the full extent of my strength!” They actor did an awesome job on that scene.
The suicide attempt (which sadly turned out to be a trap) reminds me of an awesome moment in the "All Star Superman" graphic novel, where Superman takes the time out of his day to save a teenage girl named Regan from walking off the edge. He pretty much said the same thing to Regan that he did to Mr. Anderson here: "You're much stronger than you think you are. Trust me."
I remember seeing two people discussing what happened with Regan. I’m paraphrasing, but I remember the first guy saying that Superman would focus on protecting the world from aliens instead of smaller things like a teenage girl. The second guy said “you might not think it’s something Superman would be concerned about, but Clark Kent would.”
Watching these, you really get the impression that Supes is a laid-back kind of guy. Cool, confidant, happy, jovial and friendly. Real Kansas farm boy stuff. But he's also got a Hell of a temper. But he's also got an awesome righteous streak.
Revelation! The reason he's so laid-back (i.e. He doesn't worry so much) is because he has so much *hope* for the future. Hang up that call to the EOD, because my mind has already been blown!
Since he's the 1st superhero I can remember seeing as a kid, to me, Superman's not a superhero, he's THE SUPERHERO. He's so iconic, it's just a shame that DC has never really been able to get him right in the movies. To me, the best interpretation of him is from the JL cartoon--stoic, sensible, super-powerful, & at times snarky (which makes it even more entertaining to watch him interact w/ Batman). And he's willing to cut loose, when absolutely necessary & it's absolutely frightening to see how powerful he truly is.
We need a Superman movie written and directed by someone who understands and appreciates the character as he is, not by someone who thinks he's lame and needs to be all gloomy and a murderous psychopath in order to be cool and relevant.
@@horaciosi murderous psycho? He killed Zod and it made him feel like shit. Doesn’t sound like a murderous psycho to me. I agree with the rest of what you said though
Batman: Do us both a favor and lose the sense of humor. Superman: Do us both a favor and buy one. Not even Batman could have a contingency plan for that burn.
Superman from DCAU is the best version of the character. The people who made Superman TAS, Justice League and JL: Unlimited animated shows, had a lot of care and passion towards the character.
Older comment but while I do really like the DCAU Superman and connect his voice actor with Superman in my head I think his characterization and handling could be a bit inconsistent. The most infamous scene I can think of is the fight with Captain Marvel.
@@Priceluked I attribute that to the whole Cadmus incident going on. Put simply, my guess is that they were trying to show our Superman slowly becoming the Justice Lord Superman.
17:30 is my favourite scene in any show ever. He literally told her straight up, explained his rationale and everything. Lois now has no one to blame but herself.
this video has forgotten about one of the best quotes that Superman has ever said when he fought against captain atom " don't you touch him..... he's justice league"
I feel like in the injustice comics, they set that relation up quick and satisfying before the world started to go to hell. Adds tragedy to Superman turning into a tyrant because Batman believed in his friend before he killed joker. One of the final things he said to the clown before his death was that Superman will grieve, but he will move forward. You can see the shock in his face after seeing his friend become a murderer.
@@ComicWriter-ml3qt Yeah but the whole premise behind Superman's fall is ridiculous...Lois dies then Superman becomes a murderous tyrant...it would never happen. People conveniently forget that the foundation of Superman is that he is completely incorruptible...it's the basis for what makes him the greatest hero that ever lived.
@@gibbs615 that and he'd happily hang up the cape and tights if the world ever became "perfect" and no longer needed a Superman, and enjoy living a normal life with his wife/family.
Superman is truly one of the most inspirational heroes of all time and it's not his ability to fly believe tall buildings in a single bound shoot fire from his eyes or ice from his mouth that makes him inspirational it's the fact that despite literally being from an entirely another planet he's more human than any of us and we have John and Martha kend to thank for that they took in a literal orphan from the sky and raised him to a decent human being that's some powerful stuff keep rocking you big blue boy scout we love you ❤️💙
27:07 This! THIS! This is it! This what everyone around the world thinks of when they think of our heroes. This is the kind of thing that inspired the creator of Hero Academia to make All-Might. None of this edgy Snyder BS! What people used to love about Superman and comic characters like him was hope, compassion and the ideal that people can be something better!
Omni-Man is closer to "What if we got General Zod instead of Kal-El", but I still agree. I'm sick of "superman but evil lol" being short-hand for "complex comic book character". It may be easy to say it's unrealistic for a man with godlike power to stay as humble as Superman, but that's the point. It isn't realistic, because Superman is an ideal to strive for. He represents the best in us, the side that always chooses to be a good person who helps people, and he wants to show us that we can be like him, make that same choice, if we all tried.
I'm real tired of seeing another "Evil Superman" or someone that tries to deconstruct the idea of Superman, I would to see this idea of Superman as the true symbol of good and pure, a modern Greek Hero whose goodness and strength of heart is what truly represents
I would guide you to Superman: Man of Tomorrow. It's a very light hearted adventure of Superman learning what it means to be him, not the S on the suit, but the alien from another world, the human he really wants to be and also how much he likes to help others. Plus it has Lobo trolling Lois.
I'm so glad I grew up on the WB Superman show. That really was a great embodiment of him. He was an idealist but still able to be pragmatic. Plus I appreciate that while invulnerable he could still feel pain. That helped to ground him just enough so you could still believe he might not win. I always figured he grew stronger over the series up to Justice Leauge Unlimited because he was using his powers while still absorbing yellow sun rays. Like by using his powers while replenishing them was like whatever it was about him that gave him his powers was getting a workout and getting stronger.
The best one that I have seen is the "World Made of Cardboard" speech - it gives an idea of what the character goes through every day and how much of a problem being him would really be.
07:30 Make an ET quote with a badass line XP. Awesome 17:25 That was always my favorite scene from the animated series; it's hilarious because he's telling her the truth, because he knows she won't believe him XD!!
Robin: “So how’d you do Batman’s voice?” Superman: (in Batman’s voice) “Precise muscle control.” Robin: (smiles) Superman: (in Robin’s voice) “Plus I have a pretty good ear.” Robin: (weirded out) “Don’t do that again.”
Ever since I was little and to this day I still say Superman is the world's greatest superhero number one in DC and the one true natural leader of the Justice League. Writers these recent days just don't know how to write him the right way like the old school ones did like Dwayne McDuffie. Also fanboys these days be hating on Superman just because of his powers but he was always more than that, he's also been a great inspiration and a becon to others and the world as a superhero and a leader.
11:56 I fucking love episode, Superman is a big teddy bear, and while he’ll stop you, he’ll always do it in the way that will hurt you the least. Unless you fuck with children, then he’ll fucking drop you from the stratosphere
Superman isn't just the greatest Hero to ever exists. He is THE Hero, THE Superhero. It's more than the fact that he started Superheroes in the early 20th century, he is hope, he is inspiration, he is everything that makes up the best of people and things and more. There will never be another like Superman, because that is what he is: He is Superman.
Every Superman hater needs to watch this video! Especially if they only know the Snyder version. I love this version. The personality, sense of humor, and heart. Plus he is low key a savage! Batman: do me a favor and lose that sense of humor. Superman: do us both a favor and buy one 😂😂😂
@@silversmoke4159 they never said there was anything wrong with liking Snyder's version. He said they need to watch this if they hate superman, especially if the Snyder version is all they have to go off of.
Love how Superman after he got to know Batman realized how much a badass he is,and how you need balls stronger than wonder woman's bracelets to stand up to him
It must be hard being a normal crook with superheroes around making regular blue collar crime useless against someone with advanced fighting skills, high tech gadgets, and/or superpowers
*gets tossed by Batman and while crash landing looking at him like "did he just throw me?" Lol Loved how when before Bats can take a step Clark shoulder charges him. The line "Heard u were crazy, but didn't think u were stupid" was badass 😆😆😆
As written, we still don’t know how powerful Supes can be, while at the same time he’s always dumbed down with some new weakness. Well i feel he can overcome all limitations that his mind can make sense of.
It amazes me how a good Superman is simply a matter of writers who understand the character. Too bad that they don't hire any of these writers for the movies.
Apparently, due to Batman's disappearance, Robin requested Superman's help to find him. On the way, Superman figured that he needed to owe Batman a favor by disguising himself as him to defeat Bane in the process, after all, Bane caused Batman's disappearance in the first place, so he thought that Batman had returned to confront him, but he was unaware that Superman defeated Bane. Superman then discovered that Brainiac had kidnapped Batman in order to lure Superman out. Hence, that's the reason why Superman was in Batman's suit.
