'The Great Wall of Japan': Locals divided over anti-tsunami shield

After the 2011 Fukushima disaster - a powerful earthquake and tsunami which killed nearly 18,000 people - the Japanese government took a radical step. It decided to build a 400-kilometre-long reinforced concrete shield along the country's northeast coast in a bid to break up future tsunami waves. This cost €11 billion and took years to build. But despite the government consulting people in each village, locals remain divided over the project as it blocks their view of the sea. Our correspondents report.

im with the last village, why live behind a concrete blockade and rely on the government to warn you just move to higher ground win win

Not the best solution ... Because building in Higher lands is better ... Forbid to build in lower lands ...

build higher and put farmland/parks or any low value zone in lower and have a good detection system, the wall is overkill for something that they can't prevent anyways

Building in the mountains is expensive and landslides always occur during heavy rains and typhoons in Japan. Building in the mountains means cutting down trees which increases the risk of landslides.

The argument for not seeing the tsunami closing is stupid, as it it will only be a tsunami afther a quake ...

Not every quake results in a tsunami! In fact most earthquake don't end up with a tsunami

Japan is ahead of it's time....it is defiantly future tech ....but if this will worth, it will defianly part of the world in 2100 when natural disasters are controlled.
