What I don't get is why there still isn't a railroad across it. To get from the south to the north of The Netherlands, or vice versa, you have to go all the way around the Ijsselmeer, a massive detour. It doesn't make any sense especially when you consider that there is still enough room to lay track and that construction would be incredibly cheap due to it all being government owned land and there being no structures or even terrain elevation issues.

Imo it would be an eyesore to have electricity cables along the entire thing. Besides, it's very windy there, maintenance costs would be way higher than average

Because there aren’t that many people who will travel from the north of Noord-Holland to Friesland. Most people stay and travel between Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht and other every city in that triangle (known as Randstad) I live near Amsterdam, and drove on the afsluitdijk just once in my whole life.

That was the plan and they tried. But it didn't seem profitable. You can see a groove for the tracks at Amsteldiepdijk. They build foundations at the sluice for train bridges. Space saved for the railroad are now used for the highway A7 when they broaden the road.

2 things you need to remember about the Dutch and their relationship with the sea: 1) They have been gaining land on the sea since the 12th century. 2) The flooding of 1953. Even now, a lot of the software we use for foundations is made in Delft.

Because against the sea, a 7 mt tall reinforced wall is better than a 12 mt weak one...have you heard of corrosion? It doesn't matter how tall the wall is, if it's not strong enough to withstand the pounding of the water, its base will get eroded and then collapse.

Probably will happen in a few decades. But at the moment its erosion they have to deal with. So maby around 2050s or so, a new retrofit this time increasing the height.

I believe the logic is as follows: When you have a levee and water comes over the top during heavy weather, the levee starts to erode at the inside. Erosion at the inside combined with high water pressure on the outside breaches the levee and then floods the land behind it. If you reinforce the levee in such a way that you can take a lot of water coming over the top during a storm, nothing much happens. It is relatively a very small amount of water which doesn't hurt anyone as long as it doesn't erode the levee. This is a very efficient solution, you technically let the levee fail (water comes over the top), but as long as the structure can withstand it and the amount of water coming over is limited, nobody gets hurt. During extreme weather the afsluitdijk becomes a half-assed weir with harmless discharge.

As a Dutch person this is so much fun to watch, for me the Afsluitdijk is an amazing structure, but it also feels like "normal". In the Netherlands we have been building "dijken" for a long time, so the Afsluitdijk is just an advanced example. When we are talking about length, there is not yet a bigger sea wall in the Netherlands, however there are some more advanced sea walls in Zeeland.

I grew up in Den Helder, just around the corner from the Afsluitdijk. I travelled over this dijk numerous times and heard many of these stories in my native tongue when I was still a kid but it's funny how you only appreciate these kind of achievements when you're older and actually understand what it took to make this.

The Dutch have mastered sea defence and most other sea related fields, and as such they're the first one people all over the world call when there is a sea related issue. This is very impressive construction, even more impressive this started 100 years ago. In Poland we struggle with sewage treatment plant in our capital city and this has been build 20 years ago only 2 pipes under the river and we can’t find solution. Well done you ✌️

Yes, Mumbai is rich enough now. There are many smart people in India. Study how similar problems have been solved in other countries, gradually learn, make a plan and make your city a better place to live. It's not so difficult.

Very doable. Will cost you about 20 billion pounds, that is if you hire Danes, Norwegians, Japanese or Koreans to do it. Similar bridge/tunnel complex was recently build between Denmark and Sweden. Problem is politics. England and Ireland will not allow it. It is not in their interest.

That is the thing.. The USA, and other large nations, have so much land, they are not in such a do or die critical situation. With Netherlands it is literally do or die. This tiny nation, this land is all they got! No one else will give them any for sure.Their back is to the sea, they got nowhere else to go! That is why they are so desperate and intense about this. ALso they had a huge flood in 1953 and 10,000 people drowned! So they lead the way on this sea wall technology because they have to, no choice..

Yes, our country is small, but still we are 2nd largest food exporter in the world (after the US), so even with small amounts of land and some working smart brains you can get pretty far. Maybe we should just ask Russia if they would like to sell some land? They did it before when they sold Alaska to the United States in the late 1800s. Or Canada, which has also plenty of land available.

There's this beautifull quote put on a plaque at the Deltaworks in Zeeland. (Neeltje Jans to be exact.) Which is where the famous dam is constructed. ‘Hier gaan over het tij, de wind, de maan en wij’. Or roughly translated to English: "Here regarding the tides, the wind, the moon and we decide". Just try and top that quote people. :P And mind you that in dutch it rhymes.

The Nobelprize winner 1902, Hendrik Lorentz worked also on this project: Lorentz was also asked by the Dutch government to chair a committee to calculate some of the effects of the proposed Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam) flood control dam on water levels in the Waddenzee. Hydraulic engineering was mainly an empirical science at that time, but the disturbance of the tidal flow caused by the Afsluitdijk was so unprecedented that the empirical rules could not be trusted. Originally Lorentz was only supposed to have a coordinating role in the committee, but it quickly became apparent that Lorentz was the only physicist to have any fundamental traction on the problem. In the period 1918 till 1926, Lorentz invested a large portion of his time in the problem.[26] Lorentz proposed to start from the basic hydrodynamic equations of motion and solve the problem numerically. This was feasible for a "human computer", because of the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the water flow in the Waddenzee. The Afsluitdijk was completed in 1932, and the predictions of Lorentz and his committee turned out to be remarkably accurate.[B 11][B 2] One of the two sets of locks in the Afsluitdijk was named after him.
