I remember reading a biography of Jim Thorpe when I was in elementary school (we're talking about like 1970). I was very impressed then and remain so. Thanks.

Jim Thorpe said his happiest years were when he was playing Pro Football with the Canton Bulldogs. At halftime of a game he put on a punting exhibition and punted the ball from one end zone to the other.

Fascinating story of such a superb athlete and humble being. I memorize birthdays as a hobby and Mr. Thorpe’s is especially challenging. See Jim Thorpe, Astrodatabank, Source Notes. He was born in May, 1987, but read the arguments for two days: May 22 and 28. Even the place of birth is disputed. Bo Jackson might be the guy who would best challenge Jim Thorpe for being the athlete of the century.
