i got a chance to see him play in Portland Maine, it was winter, freezing out, my brother told me he was in port , i called and got the address jumped in my cold truck and sped off cause it was getting late and i didn't want to miss it, i got there and there was a stool freed up 8 feet away, what a joy it was to see this man live in action, i had him sign my club card where i played pool, had it laminated right away
I played E.R.in a bar without knowing who he was and I can honestly say he is one of the most humble people I have ever met. Nothing but respect for him!
@rldabomb33 it was about 16-17 years ago in fair oaks California at a bar called Harps, which is now closed. He told me before he left that I was pretty good and if I applied myself I could be great. He told me he and his peers would try and read a newspaper from across a pool table in order to gauge how good their eye was. He told me lots of things in a jovial manner and told me to look him up cause he was a professional player. At the time I didn't think much of it , but later I saw him playing in videos and was surprised
@@basketcaseknapperdingusmcg7701 maybe that time you're hard core pool fan player yet because every professional players knew who was even for amateur like us.
The most amazing thing about reyes for me is his guts. He's pulling off these out of this world tricks in championship games. He doesn't play safe, he's there to add unnecessary flares to his shots but he always has the confidence to pull off those difficult shots in the closing moments to put an exclamation point to his win. He's truly one of one.
@2691 Pacquiao is humble but this guy is like your normal old dude walking in the street, he's on another level of humbleness. He would always say he is just lucky
@@nivlak2691 Yeah, Pacquiao is humble too but he now walks around in our country like a rich dude, with entourages and bodyguards. Efren just walks around like a nobody, living like a nobody (no mansions like Pacquiao), still hangs out in run of a mill billiard halls, and doesn't live in luxury unlike pacquiao, who now owns luxury cars and have multiple mansions. Efren lives in a very normal life. Pacquiao's life and family are almost always in the spotlight, unlike Reyes who lives in a private life, and most people know little about his family. Pacquiao's family are already celebrities in their own right. So no, Efren Reyes is not like Pacquiao.
What's amazing with ER is that he's stayed humble and down to earth. He doesn't get bothered with his opponents, and plays composed all the time. He always see something in the table which others don't and that's what makes him really special.
I mean as Filipino that never play pool he made pool for me entertaining to watch and ruin any other competitive pool players in my eyes saying "yeah but his not like the magician tho"
I will watch that for sure. 8 yr old Efren living in Philippine province went to Manila. From there he slept on top of the pool table and there was the magic starts. Cool!
I had the honor of losing to him at 2 tournaments in Long Beach, CA in the early 2000s. I just turned 21 and had won some college and bar tournaments and wanted to try larger ones. Well.. I didn't get a shot in at all at Hard Times. I won only the 1st of 5 at Yankee Doodles he obviously ran the rest. I stayed seated lol.
Yep, twice. First at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, CA just north of Long Beach. They had an annual tournament with $20k first prize and several smaller ones throughout the year. Second time at Yankee Doodles during a Saturday tournament.
Never in my life did i ever think i would watch Joe Rogan and Ron White talk about Efren Reyes for 8 minutes straight!! I'm lovin every minute of it!!!!
I've followed Efren "Bata" Reyes for a while now and what he does on the table is absolutely amazing. He's got that table grid locked into his brain and can see angles that nobody else even looks for. His cue ball control and the way he handles the cue is one of a kind. One of the most brilliant races to 9 that I've seen to date is when he and Steve Davis (Snooker champ extraordinaire) played 8 ball. The shots these men played left my jaw on the floor!!
My dad was a brilliant pool player. He actually played Willie Mosconi and beat him in a game of straight pool to 100. I know it’s not bullshit bc I watched my dad in pool halls. He could have been a pro if he put his mind to it. But Vietnam happened, he ended up stationed in El Paso, met my mom who had 3 kids and was coming off a tyrannically abusive drunk of a “husband,” he fell in love, and I came along a few years later. Dad called Efren the best he ever saw back in the early to mid 1990’s. 17 years after my father’s untimely death, Efren is still the GOAT
I think poor equipment and bad felt or high humidity,no jump cues etc,has made Efron who who is,then he gets on a high quality cue and on high quality tables just showcases his talent.
@bryanbarnes8997 Seems to be a theme with world class athletes. There's a popular story with Kyrie where it's said he used to play on a beat up backboard with pieces falling off and he had to get creative with his shots. Project Efren bout to go crazy, I'm letting my kid play exclusively with a mop handle and half a chopstick.
Efren used the name Cesar Morales instead of his real name because his enemies were too scared to play against him when they knew who he really was. So, he chose a different name to trick them into playing against him. 😂. Thats how good he was 😂
I went to the 1994 U.S. Open in Chesapeake, VA. It had just been moved from Barry Behrman’s pool room to the Holiday Inn ballroom. I watched him kick the 1-ball in the side after Varner played a safety and hooked him, then proceeded to run out. After more of the same, this little dude taps me on the shoulder after hearing me talk to my friend, Walter Glass, who played really sporty - the guy asks me if I want to bet on who will win the finals. I looked at the young kid (maybe 16 MAX) and thought about it. It was early in the set, and I said I’d take Reyes and give him 2 games on the wire. He wouldn’t take it. He said HE wanted Reyes too. He asked me if I wanted to play some at the pool hall after the tourney and I said sure. After all, the kid was super young and about 5 feet tall. I agree, and I went to smoke a joint with a couple road dogs and we headed to the pool room. We walked in, and this kid was getting the 7-8 and the break from Jose Parica and ROASTING HIM. Parica was playing a ball or less under Efren at the time! I asked around and found out the kid was 15 (just turned). His name was Corey Deuel. I decided not to play him after some good info, and the next time I saw him after we left town was about 5-6 years later. ON THE COVER OF POOL & BILLIARD MAGAZINE!!! 😂😂😂 He was the #1 ranked player in the world but still looked like he did back then, just way taller. Anyways… another guy that wasted his potential was Tony Watson from Hickory, NC. That kid could swing it! He and Mike Coltrain and Stevie Moore used to run around, but Tony beat them both when he was in stroke. But NOBODY could beat Efren. He would stand there scratching his head, with his “custom” cue (a POS from Manilla that some guy made for him. No longer plays with it), rubbing his stomach, then getting up and running the rack like it was inevitable. Best player I’ve ever seen. Mark Tadd, Keith McCready, and Rodney Morris have had runs of several days where they barely missed a ball, but over the long run, I’ve never seen anyone close. Dave Matlock and Junior Brown on the bar box, but NOBODY on the 9’. That goes for straight pool, banks, one pocket, 10-ball, 9-ball, or 8-ball
Wayne Gretzky in hockey. His records literally can't even be touched. You can cut Wayne's career in half and he would still be one of the best players ever. Guy literally had the stats of multiple hall of fame careers in one.
One time Eferen was sleeping under the table at shooters in Riverside. Woke up and started practicing Rotation. The opening guy came in, was in awe. Called someone up, said;" Theres a toothless Mexican in here running out racks of Rotation.".
He was Born in Mexico Pampanga, Filipinas. Where most Mexican Galleon Sailors Settled & Married Locals! Acapulco & Manila Galleon Trade History, Google it !
A farewell tour upon his retirement from the pros was held and all the top players from all over the world were there. Thats how significant and great that legend is
hes still playing money games, gamblng. The full matchs video of his games are posted on fb sometimes livestream, hence online. one time around pandemic, the pool hall he was playing at is raided, because the police saw the livestream and witnessed that most people in the hall has no masks, no social distancing, gambling 😂 they just talked to sir efren very briefly then let him go, but others thats caught were taken to the station.😅
I played with Efren when I was 10, he gave me all the tricks on how to understand the game, he basically sees the 4th dimension, Im so glad to see him still play!!
You guys should watch the legendary match between Efren Reyes and Earl "The Pearl" Strickland named "Color Of Money" back in '96. It was a three-day match where Efren won and took home the highest prize in pool history at the time. He also won the rematch in 2001. He really is the G.O.A.T.
Good interview. I played with Efren Reyes in the Reno open Archer Davenport Warner etc they were all in there mid to late 30s Acher was young too but I was barely 20. Pool & golf are the 2 best games ever invented. Ping pong and tennis are cool too. Love Ron White too! Cheers
Watching him playing when i was a kid on TV, its just great and mesmerizing, that's the only time i got hooked on pool, his era is unbelievable, and for Joe to say ARGUABLY is just an understatement, he is the GOAT and its not even close.
Thank you for giving respect and appreciating Efren 'Bata' the magician Reyes. He is indeed a legend even to this day. Very humble, smiley face guy. Watched him growing up and he's like as old as my dad. His tournaments are televised locally. Sending love from the Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Before Manny Pacquiao, Efren "Bata" Reyes is the Filipino premier athlete. He carried our flag 🇵🇭 in the 1980s and 1990s, and win a lot of international competitions.
Ive watched Efren vs Strickland showdown back in my childhood days, it was magical. Thank you Efren Bata Reyes for the joy you bring while playing pool.❤
Efren is the humblest legend/master ever. He never lets his accomplishments ever change the fact that he’s just a dude that’s a master at something. So many sportsmen nowadays think the whole world should listen to what they have to say just because they’re the best at playing with a ball and whatnot.
I used to referee for the PBTA in the 90's. I always joked that the perfect player was a combination of Earl the Pearl (for shotmaking) and Bata (for position play)...
Joe Rogan being my favorite podcaster talking about my childhood hero is like music to my ears. So awesome listening to this. Thanks Joe! Greetings from the Philippines. 🤟🏼
@@Endless20162 You mean Django? Yeah thats his name. The Philippines back in the 50s, 60s and even through the 80s was obsessed with spaghetti western films, like cowboys and all. Hence why some filipinos are named after from famous cowboy lore.
Francisco Bustamante is his real name and "Django" is his nickname and he got the nickname because when he was playing money games in his teenage years, he used to wear a cowboy type hat and would have a cigareette in his mouth while playing, and one of the locals said he was like the character, "Django" and the nickname has stuck with him since then.
In the Philippines Efren "Bata" Reyes is considered the Michael Jordan of 9 ball pool. He's the GOAT, no doubt. I was hoping Jaime would play the clip of the L shot or the Z shot by Efren. Frack yeah! It's amazing!
In addition to Manny Pacquiao, Efren Reyes is another one of our national treasures. Joe, as usual, you are the man and love the way you do interviews. Love Ron White ... what happen to the quintessential whisky glass on the stool, cigarette in one hand, and microphone in the other? Great video, guys.
The guy has a geometrical mind. He can solve obtuse, reflex, straight, acute, right and full rotation angles. That's actually a genius person. For someone who can plot an angles using a cue and a rolling balls has an enormous powerful brain. I have problem plotting an angle while I am sitting in the table with pencil, paper, ruler and protractor let alone a moving variable tool object like a cue, the ball speed, the rail cushion and a multiple balls. That's an insane power n skills.
Saw a vid of hin where he was just standing watching a bunch of guys play pool then of of them ask him to take a shot and he effortlessly made the shot lol. I think he was eating or somthing at the time
It was in Spain I think. The guy was Alcaide (a pro), he hold Efren's coffee cup and HESITANTLY made a kick shot with a bag on the other shoulder and tissue paper in the other hand.
That soft follow through definitely helps after you've had a few, but saying that you be wasted and smash them down without even knowing how you did it - pool is so cool bro. I only like to have fun but I can definitely see how it can become big game 💪
