Yamaha CP70M - $2000 Caspinette toy piano - $5 Performing Genesis on an instrument built for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star - priceless Tutorials on how to play this and other riffs here: • Suck Less at Keyboards...
You noticed!! I've always felt that Genesis was the greatest musical comedy act that ever was. Everything they did, masterful and complex as it was, always had a sort of tongue in cheek vibe, especially when matched with their hilarious lyrical wit ("Entangled", "Get Em Out By Friday", etc).
@@L00PdeL00P Thanks for that clip! I can't believe I've never seen that one. Prog music catches a lot of heat for being snobby and pretentious but bands like Genesis & Jethro Tull really showed us a wacky funny side to the whole thing.
Cinema Show is freaking awesome. The only reason I prefer Cage is because of the drums, more dramatic breaks & changes. Also Gabriel's singing in the middle adds that extra push over the cliff. But Cinema definitely wins with the most epic part ever written... you know the one I'm talking about when the mellotrons kick in full force at the end.
Fantastic! We need to get you, Howard Jones (major prog) & Howard's inspiration the late Keith Emerson together! What an incredible show that would be!! Emerson used to stick knives into his synth's & so many other things (all of which you already know I'm sure)!!..Emerson was Howard's inspiration...you have inspired many yourself..anyone who hit the thumbs down on this just doesn't get it!! This needs to be sent to Howard's Twitter page..he's a bigtime Twitter guy..another awesome, kind soul..he's very open to helping others achieve their dreams..I've seen him post on Twitter other musicians such as yourself..also; he's on Spotify..hey, I believe in paying it forward..I'll quit commenting so much but it's been so many years since I've heard top notch music..that's why I'm so enthusiastic about yours!!! Suzanne
a) Don't you dare stop commenting or I'll quit music this instant ;) b) I had no idea Howard Jones was inspired by Keith Emerson, that's so cool! "Things Can Only Get Better" was one of the formative songs of my childhood (along with Van Halen "Jump", but we won't go there) that made me take up keyboards/synths. Keith himself became a huge inspiration for me too, though I admit his mind was on a different plane of existence and I could never grasp how he wrote such amazingly bizarre parts (breaking every "rule" of classical music ever written). One of these days I'll attempt Tarkus on an accordion. Without the knives. c) Thank you sooo much! I'm so honored that someone like yourself, who knows good music and knows famous musicians, digs my stuff! That itself inspires me to keep crankin'
AAAWWWW!!! Thank you for being so kind...ok, another synchronicity...since May of last year...that's when my Dad passed..Mom's not well...I've actually commented on Howard Jones FB page that his song "Things Can Only Get Better" has been my mantra since then, BIG TIME, I think you get my drift. Within the last 4-5 months when things weren't getting better...I'd get in my car feeling pretty low & next thing I know guess which song would be playing on the radio?? This has happened several times to me now..coincidence??? Who knows but I do know right away my hand automatically goes & cranks up the volume & makes me smile. Hey, do ya think Van Halen's Jump video was overplayed just a bit on MTV? LOL I still love it! I love all kinds of music, always have, always will...your talent is off the charts..I, being that I'm a little bit older than you was starting to feel like a Mom that brags about their kid all the time...just didn't want you to think I'm a stalker or a weirdo cat lady with 500 cats..like I said..wish I had a talent for writing. Anyway, I so hope I can help get your music out there so like you said "keep crankin"!! p.s. Don't you ever, ever, ever quit music! It's truly the most powerful thing, I feel, on this earth. Hang in there!!! Dang, Tarkus on an accordion. Bring it on!!! Suzanne
That's crazy, but that's definitely the song to have on repeat during tough times: the perfect blend of inspiring lyrics, upbeat music, and 80s nostalgia. I think the cosmic airwaves were really pulling for you! As for Jump being overplayed, oh you know it. I think that was back when MTV had only 2 videos (Jump & Money For Nothing) and they just kept em going nonstop Also, STALK AWAY! And I love cats so bring them to the party as well haha (random: did you know Queen's awesome song "All Dead" was about Brian May's cat?). Anyway keep at it, and so will I!
You got it..Years ago I was lucky to meet all the guys in the band "Loverboy"..sorry, no lasting connections there-damn! Mike Reno-the lead singer was talking about the music biz & he totally credits MTV for their success...Mike said here we were touring & the next thing they knew was their record company was getting calls constantly from MTV people wanting videos & wanting them like yesterday!! Of course, they complied & you know the rest. Another quick note, I'm a huge Mark Knopler fan but one of my favorite albums he made was for the soundtrack for the movie "Local Hero" back in 1983 (year I graduated High School)! I can listen to it & totally feel like I'm in Scotland..if you've never seen it, you might like it..it has a message for us all...about how are earth is being taken over by industry, greed, money, etc. FYI--ok, I'll stalk away but only thing is..I'm a dog person (I like cats too, just not as much) & no I had no idea that "All Dead" was about Brian May's cat! Freddie did love his cats & apparently Brian's as well. Thanks for sharing that my kind soul friend!! I swear to God every time I've hear you perform I'm just transfixed..thank you for that & also; if I don't answer for a day or two please forgive me..Barb & I are taking care of Mom so I won't be home a lot...which normally that would be no problem but living in Idaho (come on, we've only just started getting indoor plumbing recently)! NOT!! I don't have a smart phone, tablets..all I use is my desktop computer & that's it..just wanted you to know. oh my God..I'm typing & I can't shut up--someone, get the hook!!! LOL LOL I'm off to clear the snow off my car...we're having quite the little blizzard right now. If you ever stop playing your music I will not be a happy girl..I just hope that somehow when I hear back from Laurie they can guide you..Duncan is also one of the musicians who runs what's called "Bandcamp", where fans can (probably) pay a lot of money to sing with their fav artist..I know Roger Daltrey is another member..I'll have to look it up..I can't remember the other artists but it's pretty cool. STALK to ya later!! (Insert my silly ass laugh)! I know, I'm pathetic cuz I just laughed at my own joke! HEE HEE Suzanne
@@scneese64 "STALK to you later" I just spit coffee all over the place.... you gotta warn me before you drop these zingers XD Ok, omg first, Mark Knopfler. I haven't heard or seen "Local Hero" (checking it out right after this), but Dire Straits Making Movies was the 2nd cd I ever owned and I wore it down to the tin foil. His lyrics, and especially his sense of stout Scottish irony, are absolute genius. Guitar playing goes without saying... He's the reason why, to this day, I can't play guitar with a pick to save my life ;) Bandcamp is huuge! Every musician I know is on there. Alas, not me yet, I'm still wrestling with myspace...... And dogs. Dogs dogs dogs. Doggity dog dogs. I mean cats are awesome & all, but DOGS. You may have noticed I try to slip a dog or two in a lot of videos because I'm so freaking obsessed with dogs. This warrants much further discussion... Do you have email? (figured I gotta ask since you've wisely avoided smartphones all these years). If you do, hit me at rickyzig at gmail com so I can tell you of my secret alter ego when I'm not abusing pianos. It involves rescuing dogs. Oh bloody hell I spoiled the secret.
You are missed my friend.. This video is too damn funny and upsetting at the same time.. ! We just barely got to work together and there was so much more both of us could have set in motion...
We definitely had a pretty good outfit going... in a parallel universe who knows? A toy piano kicking into a full band cover of The Musical Box would've kicked ass!
Thanks! and Haha true my recording technique definitely isn't on par with the piece. At one point I thought of running the Caspinette thru a distortion pedal to give it some nads but then why not use a real ARP like Tony? Oh that's right because I can't afford one ;)
My ukulele work on the Gentle Giant tunes would go so well with this! I've got a guitarist who can do any of the old material we used to run.... He's from the Southern Border of NY.... Much closer to you... Dude... Find the bassist and Drummer.... and we could do some recordings at least form a band if possible... do a show every great once in a while? Hit me up man...
Dude I have the rhythm section ready to go (drummer toured with Genesis, percussionist jammed with Santana). Bassists are always a problem, aren't they? I mean how hard can it be to play 4 freakin strings. I got 88 to worry about ;)
I think maybe you missed his point...maybe he meant that this actual video is the greatest prog solo ever. Let's face it, that little keyboard just sings!!
@pschroeter1 lmao Funny story about that... Years ago I broke my hand and it healed wrong but somehow I ended up with an extra note stretch. Course I can't use chopsticks to save my life, but win some lose some :p
@ReaktorLeak yup he did. More often the L-122 I believe. I forgot as I use the B3 for those parts. Am jealous of this guys piano as I would love one but have to make do with samples for it.
Man I hope you find some. It's rare to find musicians willing to tackle Genesis these days, and they're getting spread out further apart. I dunno if you're willing to cross the border but north New York state has a pretty strong prog community. We gotta keep this stuff alive (and live).
@@ZeroChannelZero your so right man , thanks for the response, i wish you guys were closer, id have a total blast messin with this stuff, well maybe someone will see this and who knows, at least it shows exactly what id be into , rather than go the route of one of those band ad things which so far has just been a pain .....keep it happening man, all the best cause you know its gonna be fun...
