The Daytona 500 is both the biggest race due to prestige as well as the biggest race due to the incredible and sometimes unbelievable moments that the superspeedway racing style produces. One of the biggest if not the biggest of these would be that of Trevor Bayne who won the 2011 Daytona 500 with the famed Wood Brothers #21 car. So today we look back at this moment in NASCAR history and see how the day worked itself out. This is the greatest underdog victory in Daytona 500 history.

It’s an even bigger deal when you consider the fact that the Wood Brothers missed the Daytona 500 entirely a few years previously.

Another underdog win at the Daytona 500 was Derricke Cope's in 1990. Overshadowed by Dale Earnhardt blowing his tyre on the final corner of the final lap, Cope was in the right place at the right time to capitalise on Dale's misfortune

This is the first Daytona 500 I missed. I was in high school, and my choir had a concert that day (in fact, the most important concert in my time in that choir). Luckily, I witnessed both of Dale, Jr.'s 500 victories, and Denny Hamlin dedicating his 2019 500 victory to JD Gibbs.

One thing I love about this win, it gets swept under the rug a lot, but it was one of his pre race interviews earlier in the week. I can't remember if it was duels or qualifying, but they were interviewing Trevor and I can't remember who was interviewing him either, but she said "before we came on the air, what did I tell you not to call me because it makes me feel old?" He was like "ma'am, you asked I don't call you ma'am" then she continues with the interview and as they finish he walks away with a "yes ma'am" and I laughed so hard. But at the same time I was like damn what a nice kid. Then a few days later he wins the 500 and I was so happy for him and everyone got the nice guys can finish first story. One of my favorite Speed weeks moments as a fan.

Our family went down to Florida from 2005-2012. Me and my brother’s first 500 was ‘06…that was a miserable race, it quite literally never stopped drizzling. We sat on the SuperStretch like usual way up high, and anyone who was there will tell you *you could hear a mouse fart*. Yes, even when the cars passed. It was a surreal moment I’ll never forget. I’ll always be able to say ‘I was there!’ It wasn’t even five minutes until the pack went poof and those tandems formed. Regardless, we got to see NASCAR at its’ peak in popularity, wandering through a sea of 100,000 people to the post-COT era that became the Gen 6 car. What amazing times!!

Thanks for sharing! I remember watching the 2011 Daytona 500 at my grandma’s house during her birthday party. I felt badly for Dale Jr. after he crashed out, but I was elated to see Trevor score his first and only Cup Series win in the Great American Race. 1 of the 2 biggest underdog victories that year as well as Regan Smith would get his second career victory in the 2011 southern 500 at Darlington. (Smith won that 2008 Talladega race and no one can tell me otherwise.) The racing was different because of the Tandem Drafting that they had. I don’t understand why Tandem Drafting was hated so much. The one thing Bayne accomplished in his career. After this he fell off a cliff while going to Roush the next year.

1990 Derrike Cope Daytona 500 win was much more of an Underdog Story. Stand-alone underfunded team with a journeyman driver who never made any real noise in the sport rose to the occasion. Yes Dale Sr had a flat tire on the last lap could make one question if it was a fluke win. A few weeks later at Dover they came back from being a lap down to dominate and win the race proving that their Daytona performance was no fluke.

This is right up there with Derrick Cope winning the 1990 500, the late Dan Wheldon winning the Indy 500 the same year as this & Olivier Panis winning the Monaco GP in 1996 as biggest underdog victories among F1, Indycar & NASCAR. With all of these upset victories including Bayne's, they have in common the fact that the winner took advantage of other's misfortune although in the case of Panis it was more due to the fact that it rained heavily throughout the race and that there was only 2 other cars besides him on track at the end. It also was the final win ever for the Ligier team. The 1996 Monaco GP is easily the biggest wreckfest in F1 history right alongside the 2003 Brazilian GP.

Sad part is Trevor Bayne would not win again nor would he have any other success in Cup outside of this one race and he really impressed many of the established drivers by working with them and listening to them. And he would also endure some health issues with lyme disease and after that he was never the same driver again which is a shame. Bayne got a lot of looks coming of his Daytona win, but sadly that never materialized.
