The Daytona 500 can set a driver’s legacy when their career is all said and done. While many great stories have been made in this race and also many great drivers have made their mark there are some moments that we can all think “what if” on. So with that this is 10 Daytona 500 what if moments.

6:22 This could be a bigger "what if" than you would think at first. Everyone knows that in the 2001 500 Dale was defending for his team rather than trying to actually win for himself, but if he didn't have the '98 500 win, maybe he would have been more aggressive, thus being further ahead of the main pack (maybe in 1st or 2nd) and not caught up in that crash.

The 2001 Daytona 500 is a defiantly big “What if” Daytona 500 scenario... What If Dale Earnhardt survived his crash and saw Michael Waltrip in victory lane that year? NASCAR would be completely different if that happened... Who knows... sure there’s so many What Ifs about Dale Sr. but it remains a mystery filled with speculation. The Different History Wiki shows that Dale would’ve won his eighth championship in 2001 with 13 wins... but the different history wiki page of Dale Sr. scratches my head just the fan theories surrounding Dale Earnhardts later years until retirement...

Let's be real: the BIGGEST what-if is the 2001 Daytona 500, specifically the survival of Dale Earnhardt. Either he gets caught up in the Lap 173 Big One, or doesn't try to block Sterling Marlin. Either way, with Dale still alive, he'd have a TON of clout, and Brian France wouldn't be able to get away with much of the crap he did in our timeline. The Chase/playoffs, stage racing, the Car of Tomorrow in its original state, the elimination of Rockingham, none of these would happen. And if they did, Dale would either organize a strike, or a CART/IRL-type split.

I think you got some of these what if scenarios from Griffdawgs and SonicRules personal what If scenarios from NR2003 and I saw the entire series and some scenarios were just odd moments where I go “uhhh?” And one of those odd moments that moment is where there’s a guardrail around the Bristol pit road... The only thing they both and the Different History Wiki have in common is Kevin Harvick would’ve debuted in the 30 car full time in 2002... and it makes sense... but the Different History Wiki shows that Dale would’ve won title number eight in 2001 edging out Jeff Gordon... but the Different History Wiki shows just fan theories up until 2021... and Dale would’ve retired around 2005 and 2006... Speaking of 2005 and 2006 from NASCAR Thunder 2003 to NASCAR 07 video games Dale Sr. is in the games as an unlockable driver and that gave me some theories that he would’ve retired around 2005 and 2006... but how they added him in the games through 07 is still a mystery yet still no gamer magazine articles about why they added him...

I have two: one is a what-if scenario as to what if Dale Earnhardt never died in the crash in the Daytona 500 in 2001. As in, what if NASCAR had taken action on Adam Petty's death and upped its safety that Dale survived the crash? The other is what if the caution flew in 2007 as soon as the wreck started?
@Dark-ql7kn
@Dark-ql7kn 7 месяцев назад
2001 Answer: Like Tony Stewart with the HANS Device, Earnhardt would hate having to wear it and like restrictor plate, would hate it until he retires around 2003-2005, probably leading to him screwing up: Gordon (2001) Stewart (2002) Matt (2003) Cause I argue, the reason these seasons played out the way they did was because Earnhardt was out of the picture Jr would be a contender since he ain’t grieving the lost of Sr Waltrip would probably win a little more as the death of his boss did affect him going forward Steve would probably still crash and retire, but the #1 still stays DEI would be a threat to every Motorsports company on the NASCAR track Jr probably still be racing in 2023 with more wins along l some of the best drivers go to DEI as Dale knew talent and would seek these guys, he actually would’ve loved for Gordon to race for him as he was just so good Yap, yap, yap, as you see, acting on Adams death would be altering NASCAR history, but these are just speculation

I'll address the elephant in the room. What if Dale Earnhardt, Sr. isn't wrecked at the end of the 2001 Daytona 500?
@Mister_Matt_X
@Mister_Matt_X Год назад
It’s definitely an elephant in the room for sure... Because there’s so many speculations about it as I mentioned it The Different History Wiki shows that Dale Sr. would’ve gotten his eighth championship in 2001 with 13 wins edging out Jeff Gordon out... But just recently not to long ago I was looking at articles both pre and aftermath of the 2001 Daytona 500 where Sonic sponsorship Dale the Wednesday before the 2001 Daytona 500 and gave RCR 20 million dollars for the sponsorship deal for three years. For Hershey’s the article headline reads “Hershey’s Earnhardt Promo In Limbo” to decide what’s appropriate but trying to work with the family and RCR. Keep in mind as well they also suspected promotions... For the Sonic sponsorship they mourned and Vice President Of Corporation Communication Nancy Love Robertson said “On behalf of Sonic Corp., our franchisees and operators, we have extended our condolences to the Earnhardt family," But also mentioned that any further comment now would be inappropriate... So I did some research about this...
@justinwhite4995
@justinwhite4995 Год назад
And as annoying as it is, the answer in the room Some young driver or old favorite will die in an accident, forcing the HANS device and full face helmets. Boring answer I know. Another boring answer: Earnhardt might win a few more races and retire in the early 2000s. No way he sticks through the Chase. More fun answer: DEI would still be around, and Teresa Earnhardt wouldn't have control over her husband's likeness! Maybe Earnhardt doesn't join Hendrick, opening for Jimmie, Gordon, Kyle, and Mark? Or some other driver? Different Hendrick team. Maybe Byron wouldn't be found by Jr and run for Hendrick. Maybe no Bowman, or Kahne would either get a ride earlier with the new "big 3" or stay at Evernham? Would that mean that Evernham stays a few more years? Or Kahne with Petty if they do merge? Many ideas can stem from it
@Mister_Matt_X
@Mister_Matt_X Год назад
@@justinwhite4995 Another fun answer I might add is that we would’ve seen Kevin Harvick debut in the 30 AOL car at Atlanta in 2001 and after competing in the Cup Series for 7 races in 01 we would’ve seen him debut full time in 2002 if Dale didn’t pass... there’s also an article about that as well on February 15th of 2001... Kevin original plan was he would’ve raced Atlanta (of course), Texas, Charlotte, Sonoma, Chicagoland, the night Bristol race and the fall Richmond race and then his what would’ve been his full time Cup Series debut in 2002... So ironic... Man I’ve always wondered what could’ve been...

You asked the wrong question about 1990. If the tire doesn't go down Earnhardt wins easily, even Cope admitted that. The question you should have asked is: What if Geoff Bodine doesn't spin to bring out the last caution with 8 laps to go. Earnhardt had about a 40 second lead. Would he have made it back to the checkered without getting run over by a suddenly faster lapped car while Earnhardt was limping back to the line with a flat tire to still win? Rusty Wallace answered your question about 1998 in his postrace interview, "We might have gotten to him [Earnhardt], but there was no getting around him." Even if that last lap is run under green Earnhardt holds on. Gordon was the only one who might have had anything for Earnhardt, but he'd picked up a push and then lost a cylinder with a couple laps to go.

What if Alan Kulwicki doesn't have a flat tire with a few laps left in 1989 handing the win to D.W.? What if NASCAR chose a different means of keeping speeds under 200 mph that made drivers lift off the gas in the turns and spread the field out instead of staying in one big pack all race? What if NASCAR didn't create Speedweeks, with practices, qualifying and racing across multiple series, as a build up to the 500?

Would NASCAR let a team member drive to the backstretch to put it up? If not, he'd have to go back to pit road to get it put back up no matter what, making his move on the track pointless

@kylerhine7186
@kylerhine7186 Год назад
The year 2000 was a horrible race with a bad aero package that didn't allow hardly any passing. The #10 in an low funded team driven by Johnny Benson got the lead on I believe pit strategy and was leading with 6 to go when a caution came out. The restart allowed Dale Jarret to get by him, without the restart he might not have and Benson would possibly be alot more relevant today

What if in 1976 that Richard petty what across the line 1st? Also, what if in 1979 that kale Yarborough or Donnie Allison would have won the Daytona 500? What if in 2001 Dale Earnhardt would have been caught up in the big accident instead of the final lap or what if not blocking Sterling Marlin? Also speaking of Sterling, Marlin what if in 2002, Jeff Gordon did not block him Jeff Gordon would’ve kept the lead? What if in the years 2003 and 2009 we’re not rained out ?

What if Bobby Labonte had taken the outside lane instead of the inside lane of Turn 4 at Charlotte during the final lap of the 2005 Coca-Cola 600? Would he have gotten a better run to beat Jimmie to the line and win the race? And what would've that done for his career? Maybe he has a career revival and ends on a much better note than he did.

I would have thrown in 1999, when Rusty Wallace let Jeff Gordon in at the last second. Before Jeff Gordon hitting the damaged,slow Ricky Rudd machine. With about 10 laps to go.

Probably the most obvious one would be, what if Earnhardt doesn't wreck in 2001, and goes on to finish behind his son and long time friend

2002 still stings me as a Jeff Gordon fan cause when Dale Jr,Tony Stewart and Michael Waltrip had their issues earlier on in the race it was Jeff's to win it that was until Sterling decided to flat out wreck him under caution that led to his dumbass red flag stunt and Ward wound up winning it.

2010: NO HAIL MELON. ...wait, wht? How does Junior winning the 2010 Daytona 500 prevent 2022's "Hail Melon", you ask? Well, look at who won the 2010 Daytona 500: Jamie McMurray. He would not only win the Daytona 500 that year, but also win the 2010 Brickyard 400... AND NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. This caused a major controversy that lead to the adoption of the "win and you're in" format in 2014. Without McMurray winning the 2010 Daytona 500, that controversy doesn't happen, and the "win and you're in" rule change isn't made in 2014. Now, it's possible that rule is implemented starting in 2022, thanks to Michael McDowell winning the 2021 Daytona 500, but if it isn't, then the points in 2022 are quite different: Who knows... Ross Chastain likely wouldn't have been in that position at the end of the Martinsville race that caused the Hail Melon to be necessary, and he doesn't break it out.
