In history Sparta didn’t have walls like other cities and when a Greek king asked the spartan king at the time, the spartan king pointed to spartan troops and said these are the walls

The roman players were incredibly bad on this game... No synergy between teams, attacking on one single point so they could easily be blocked, commited their troops down the wall way too soon without correctly protecting archers, no coordination between the armies when they were launching an attack... I mean, damn, so much mistakes, it's pretty obvious the game is "unbalanced" in those conditions...

You can never win a siege battle because you were better. If you win as a defender it's because defending is easy. You just camp in great positions and there is little the attacker can do. If you win as attacker it's because you had more money, hence better army, and the defences don't even help that much.

I have never played total war myself, but even I could see the roman's first attack was very dreadful. At the western wall, just mindlessly charging your romans in such a tank unit as the spartan spearmen, is not unbalanced, it's unrealistic and to be honest pretty stupid.

3 years ago, but eyy you still might see this lol, you’re right that most were starved However walled cities have existed for thousands and thousands of years, and many many of them during ancient “times” so like 200 b.c. To 5,000 ish b.c. We’re actually besieged and fought over, this was actually practical at the time because of such large forces, I.e. a lengthy siege would starve the invader faster then the defender, they did that or if an army was confident enough like the well known battles by Alexander the Great they’d sally out and fight a pitched battle, thinking it would actually be more advantageous then fighting in close quarters, which the size of the armies at that time is agree with they’d be better in the open

Okay I know this is 3 years ago but cavalry broke spartan walls and romans too as Spartans were known for there bravery but not tactics so it was easy to break there formation.

Historical fact:When an athlete won an Olympic game his City State would tear a hole in the wall for him to get in and at times of War he would protect this gap with his shield 🛡. There is a high change this is the harbour city of Piraeus. A key city. Piraeus was of extreme importance, because it was a great way to supply athens without protecting the surrounding area. Between piraeus and Athens was a small corridor, wich could be easily defended, so supplies could reach the city via the harbour, through the corridor. This battle for piraeus is a key battle, because taking the city means sieging Athens was actually useful. Note: this is probably not piraeus, it's just a fan fiction :)

At 40:51 you reference Sun Tzu. Thats known as "death ground". A situation where you have to be careful to get soldiers in a position of do or die. Typically they will fight far beyond their abilities.

13:50 The reason defenders are being passive is not a mistake, the reason is a habit from a single player where you usually defending some unprotected (or kinda semi-protected) outposts on frontier, and you know (keeping in mind) that attackers have more than one army, so if you’ll be too aggressive then even if you’ll win there is no guarantee that you’ll withstand a next siege. So many prefer a solid defence rather than an aggressive defence. And the thing is that it does make sense in a single-player campaign.

To be honest, Siege Battles are very hard in Rome 2 for attackers. Because of the many chokepoints and good defensive troops, its really hard to get through as attackers. I played Rome 2 for 400h and I can say, that siege battles are unbalanced for attackers. Even in village defend, the defenders have a huge bonus. Taking walls in Rome 2 is pretty suicidal, since you will lose about half your troops to arrows while fighting on the wall.

Absolutely not. People just aren't very good at it. People don't use their archers properly, the don't use their siege equipment properly, and don't use their ranged siege properly. They focus on singular chokepoints and don't spread the defenders out. The defenders have less money for troops, a cap point they *must* defend, and cannot cover every wall in the settlement. Even then, they cannot cover every flank they have. I have lost my life to Rome 2, with over 2k hours, because I love this game. It has its faults, but the ones you have cited don't exist.

IF you had siege equipment, knocking down walls and turning it into a field battle is actually a fairly easy task. Another way to avoid archer spams is to deploy your own archers to keep their skirmishers busy while moving up your troops, however this could be difficult for the romans as they don't have access to cheap meat shield archers. At least for me, always rush the enemy if you are the attacker. keep up the pressure with your better troops and the enemy will break.

@@commanderraynor6117 Even in close to every total war game, you can kill tons of troops while they are on the walls with archers. Sure its not true for every settlement and defense in Rome 2 especially in the bigger ones but for the smaller ones, with more players, you can hold close to all ways to cap points. The archer bonus doesn't work/works bad at barbarian sieges, since breaching the walls means you are in the city itself, while in Roman/Greek/East Cities you now have to either climb down the walls or even break them.

The total war series was never balanced, it isnt about balance its about enjoying a good clash where you try to do your best with what you have. Im a very competitive player and i do appreciate some competitive games where you have identical sides, chess for example. But sometimes i just want to have fun and play a game where i can roleplay as a general in a dire situation. War isnt fair, why would this game be? Defenders do have the advantage, why would they build those huge ass static fortifications if it didn't offered a clear advantage? So the attackers must counter that with greater numbers and as apolo said, overwhelm the defenders. I do agree the defenders have the edge, but the attackers have one big advantage that is to choose where and when attack, and they did that VERY POORLY.
