The Greek Sleeper Train "504"

Recently, sleeper trains are gaining terittory once again in the european trasnport market with thousands of passengers embracing this very ambitious project launched by OBB. However, the story for the greek sleeper trains is completely different. In this short video, we present some rare (nowadays) shots of train 504, the only sleeper service to run between Athens and Thessaloniki. Its pair, train 505 ran the reverse route, from Thessaloniki to Athens with also a car transport service on both trains. These truly succesful services were sespended in 2011, as a result of economic crisis and austerity measures taked by Hellenic State on cutting off Railways' expenses. Due to its departure and arrival time, both trains 504-505 were rarely captured on video. Here are scenes only of train 504, captured between 2007 and 2011.
The closing shot is the last sleeper train 504 to ever run in Greece, on February 23rd, 2011 passing from Dekelia station.

For many years, starting from the beginning of the 1980s, I was using the night train from Thessaloniki to Athens (as I remember departure was at 22.10) accommodated in an old blue sleeping car. There was a real bed inside, a classic radiator and a window could be lowered all the way. At one time that was a standard night train with only two sleeping cars (one modern and the other from the prewar period). The canteen in one of the train wagons was a special story: smoky not only from a lot of cigarettes but also from souvlaki that was baked and sold on the spot! Once one of my trips took even 16 hours because the locomotive broke down in Bralos, so we were waiting to connect to the next train arriving from Thessaloniki! Oh, the good old days!!!

That is a shame Alexander! I love sleeping on trains , and did over 20 trips on Amtrak during my visit to the US in 2015. It is encouraging to hear of sleepers making a comeback in Europe, and let's hope the 504 & 505 return to the rails soon? Great video. CHeers Gregg.
