THE GREEN MILE | A Work Of Hideous Beauty

"The Green Mile" is a pop-cultural titan of injustice & moral uncertainty in the American South. But its depiction of empathy, race and guilt makes it a muddier and more complicated work than its reputation may suggest.

So - what are your top five Stephen King adaptations? Mine would be; The Shining (yes, I know he hates it) Misery Carrie The Mist The Shawshank Redemption + 1922 (as the most underrated) As always, the best way to help us is to leave a comment, like, subscribe and tell a friend! I haven’t read any Stephen King, but just from how much I enjoyed them as films I’ll say: The Shining Doctor Sleep It (2017) The Running Man The Mist

Frank Darabont absolutely cleared it with his 3 King adaptations. The short story is every bit as excellent. You can get it in the collection Four Seasons which also includes The Body, the source of the film Stand By Me Honestly, in my opinion King's best work isn't even his horror. All his heartfelt short stories are incredible
@inframeout
@inframeout 8 месяцев назад
I genuinely think one of the reasons his shorts work so well on screen is that they give the director and writers room to expand and enhance an incredible foundation, without being weighed down by having to fit 750+ pages into two hours. With King's material, it's always easier to add than subtract
@NoMoreCrumbs
@NoMoreCrumbs 8 месяцев назад
@@inframeout Agreed. Plus I think the format of short stories forces authors to refine their works. It has plenty of excellent emotional beats, but those are distributed over 1100 pages or so. The Body has all those same powerful moments but in a much leaner story, so they stick with me more I'm excited to see an adaptation of The Long Walk if it ever gets out of production hell

I just read five King books in a row ("The Green Mile", "Needful Things", the short story collection "Skeleton Crew" - and two of his more recent books - "Revival" and "Fairytale"). All fantastic, but as far as short stories go, I cannot recommend "The Jaunt" enough. It's a truly upsetting story about teleportation, and one of the scariest concepts he's ever put to paper

My favorite adaptations are the Darabont and Reiner films. I also liked the Castle Rock series and wish they would make more. I see King and Darabont as old white guys who grew up around flagrant acts of racism that people didn't try to hide with dogwhistles, and their anti-racist intentions are fairly obvious. They've used the Magical Minority because it feels right to them to place characters of color on a pedestal after seeing minorities in the real world being treated like they are less than human. There's something about Americans where we see something we think is wrong, and more often than not our instincts tell us to swing too far in the opposite direction to counteract the wrong that's been happening. It takes decades or even longer of work and discussion to find a nuanced position. And even then we are still left with super divisive extremes on either side of the nuance. I'm realizing this makes nuance sound a lot like centrism, and maybe what I'm getting at is that centrist is a word thrown around by people who don't want to do the work of meeting other people where they are to actually talk about difficult problems. If we treated American patriotism as it's own fandom then your take starting at 18:55 is spot on. I appreciate what you do here, In/Frame/Out guy.

Hmmm i never thought of morpheus from the matrix as a "magical minority" more of a race swapped version of the orientalized "wise martial arts master" (the wachowskis relation to asian culture is a whole other can of worms), and imo he had enough narrative agency and interiority to not just feel totally subordinate to the white protagonist. not letting the wachowskis off the hook tho, since the Oracle embodies this trope 100%. Also at the risk of being pedantic, i get why you didn't want to say the original name for the "magical minority" trope, but i think just generalizing it to POC overall really misses how specific this trope is to black Americans, specifically ADOS and how they have been otherized and stereotyped throughout US history (and tbf i think you kind of implictly acknowledge this during your analysis). Loved the inclusion of Baldwins quotes tho, and i encourage any interested in him to check out Raoul Pecks fantastic 2016 documentary adapted from one of his essays. Anyways really good video overall, you made me wanna check this.movie out again, i only have vague memories of watching it on daytime tv as a child.

I never thought about the "magical minority" trope extending back to the "Song of the South," but yeah, it totally makes sense. Never seen it, but would be interested to cringe watch just out of historical curiosity. BTW, if you've never seen Key & Peele's "Magical Negro" sketch definitely look it up. You'll piss yourself laughing. I never really thought too deeply about how the magical minority trope was used to alleviate white guilt through the redemption of the white protagonist but that's now so obvious I'll never be able to unsee it. Also, I never realized how much Stephen King overused this idea. It did remind me of the overused "minority buddy/partner" trope that was super prevalent in action movies of the 80s and 90s just to prove the white hero is a cool, non-racist dude (especially if the protagonist is in law enforcement). We've kind of fallen into a cinematic trap of sorts, haven't we? If a white protagonist has a minority friend/assistant/partner the secondary role is instantly considered demeaning for the minority character and if the roles are reversed we've entered into "white savior" territory. So, has the ideal of achieving color blind casting entered a kind of mythical twilight because it can never be truly achieved? An eye opener of a video essay for sure. Excellent, though provoking and funny work as always.

It would make for quite the challenge a writer, I can imagine the critique if one was to write that people of colour needed rescuing by white people. Or if one was to just avoid interracial relationships at all. I guess any potential value is in the "how" it is written.

Small detail but I still thought Id point it out. Originally Morpheus was going to be played by Val Kilmer with Neo being played by Will Smith. So Morpheus isnt really a magical minority character. Doesnt mean you dont have a point about miagical minority characters or that the Matrix doesnt have flaws. For my money eXistenZ was the better "what is reality?" film of 1999. The thing about white guilt is that it is incredibly valid to feel shame and empathy for the people that have been wronged because of whiteness, as well as acknowledge the advantages that people like me have because of our whiteness. But at the same time, you shouldn't make a huge spectacle and act like a pick me. You shouldn't feel personally responsible for the actions of people who were alive before you were even born. What's in the past already happened. The best you can do is learn from the mistakes of others, and stop the cycle of hatred.
