@@danielduncan6806 i agree with him. even as an introvert fallout is better when working as a team, especially since they added daily ops. ing and other game critics just say the same, if something is "popular" and "new" they usually give it a bad review and give it pretty biased, but if its "popular" and "new" doesnt mean its good, but thats my opinion and you might enjoy those types of games
How's the game? I stopped playing right around the christmas present glitch. My account might be banned because someone gave me 1000 presents, but I never did the glitch, or any glitch. I was getting annoyed about the game stuttering whenever I quick changed weapons. That, and storage space was not fun to juggle, since I'm usually a hoarder in rpg games. I'm hopeful that microsoft will overhaul the game (more than it currently is), but that'll have to wait till next year.
Yikes. Fallout 76 was such a shame. They destroyed one of the best franchises in history and ruined Bethesda's good name with one of the most broken soulless cash grabs in gaming history. I pray they find what little soul they have left and put it all into the next elder scrolls.
As a native, I can tell you that this was only a secret to everyone NOT in a 50 mile radius, for decades. My grandfather told me about it before it was even declassified.
Same here. My grandad drove a dump truck while building the bunker. He also worked as a night watchman after it was built. When the cat was finally let out of the bag he said he was glad he could finally talk about it.
The bunker was designed with the idea that it was far enough from Washington not to be directly targeted by a nuclear missile. But can there be any doubt that the Soviets knew it was there? If so, the Greenbrier would have been at least a secondary target. I wonder if anyone ever checked the declassified KGB files to see?
Omg this is insane to me that you’re posting this - I was just at the greenbrier in July, my mom works for World TeamTennis, who as you mentioned in the video moved their season there for 2020 due to Covid. I got to stay there as a result of her job & had an amazing time; obviously not all activities were running because of the pandemic but given the circumstances, the hotel did a really good job with implementing rules to reduce the spread of the virus (there were no new infections the whole time I was there). We stayed in the West Virginia Wing & got to tour the bunker, it was so cool! An absolutely beautiful place - I hope to go back! Thank you for making this video, this is one of my favorite RU-vid channels!
I'm from west Virginia and a huge fan of all of your channels. PLEASE do a geographics of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, another local amazing spot. Love to see videos of my barely known state. Lol
We just started our channel all about West Virginia history and folklore. Really cool to see a large channel like yourselves cover some WV history and locations. Love your work!
That Wash. Post reporter was probably real proud of himself, revealing the big secret bunker. Good job. Except that probably cost the taxpayers a couple of billion dollars to build another one.
@@JOESMITH-qs8ue Maybe the govt already had a new bunker built, and allowed the reporter to talk about this one to divert attention away from the new one?
I thought the same thing at first, but I actually stayed at the Greenbrier in July & took the bunker tour, where I learned that by 1992 the bunker was actually already obsolete, and technically it was kind of wasting taxpayer dollars just to keep the place maintained every year & pay undercover agents to maintain it. See, by that point in time, if a missile were to be launched at Washington there would not be nearly enough time to get all of Congress out to West Virginia! The bunker was built when missiles were carried by airplanes but by then they could be launched on rockets and arrive in minutes, causing much more damage than older nukes. There was quite literally no way the Greenbrier bunker would have been of any use by that point, and i think that was part of the point Ted Gup was trying to make - he wanted to expose the fact that tax dollars were likely going to waste there. I guess you could argue that no bunker could really protect all of Congress now if anything were to happen 🤷♀️ but if there is a new bunker...it’s probably closer to Washington!
@@lavendervvitch99 I would rather not see my tax money go to liars but I really have no say in the matter. But still go to know what is going on with the money.
watch out for scammers there. they price stuff too many "caps" and sometimes blocks the golf courses with ridiculous buildings that sometimes deify gravity
I live about 2 hours from there and can remember learning about this as a kid.. it still blows my mind! I surprised you didn't cover the "alleged" underground highway from Washington DC to the Greenbriar! 🤣
I've been by it a dozen times but never stopped. My grandparents met there during WW2 after grandpa was injured in Europe and grandma was a nurse. They were married and he went home and she was shipped to England.
I love this place! I've been meaning to go again. Skip the tour though, most of the bunker is closed as server farms. You see almost as much as the documentary, which you can find anywhere. Some of the bunker is open without a tour
"Rural West Virginia?" Simon acts like there's such a thing as urban West Virginia. I've stayed at the Greenbrier. It's really nice, and VERY expensive.
@@RecordWestVirginia Yeah, I'm from West Virginia, so I've been to Charleston plenty of times. That's about as urban as it gets, I think. Huntington is roughly as big, but it's not as much like a city, and Morgantown is just WVU.
@@briancrawford8751 Huntington's downtown is pretty urban but it's fairly small in terms of actual square miles. I do think there is an effort being made to grow all three of the cities we've mentioned. But, like most things in West Virginia, it's a slow process. lol
Thank you for this! If you can squeeze it, please consider doing a video about Mount Weather in Virginia. It shows up in movies and TV but they rarely get it right. This is where the President was sent in case of emergency.
Very happy I found this video, I watch Simon religiously and I grew up in the area around The Greenbrier. This place is absolutely amazing, if you ever get the chance to go please do!
Grew up about 5 minutes from there. Still remember when the bunker was opened up back in the 90s and they let us school kids tour through it. Kinda neat really. Nobody found it surprising. We had the largest runway in the state and air force 1 did touch and goes sometimes weekly.
Hey Simon! As a WV resident I have come to know this resort very well. Jim Justice is our current governor. They hold a lot of parties there and I have attended quite a few Greenbrier Classics. If you ever decide to visit let us know and we will show you around!
I would like one on houska castle its a really weird castle with the defensive walls on the inside because they though there was a portal to hell there. Great halloween subject! The nazi's also did some shady stuff there. (Yes I will persist!)
The Greenbrier is one of my old jobs I was raised in West Virginia and lived in lewisburg 10 mins from the resort I miss living there but sadly I moved to get away from the meth the county was so nice at one point but now tweeters rule now lol but this so far is my favorite video you have made thank you
While attending law school at Washington & Lee University in South West Virginia, I participated in a clinic assisting inmates at the Alderson Federal Prison Camp for Women. The prison was located about 15 minutes from the Greenbrier. Three law students would visit the prison each week, working out to each student making 5 trips a semester. During my last trip to Alderson, my fellow students and I decided to stop by the Greenbrier for tea. It was an incredibly beautiful place. Most of the inmates I encountered were there because of drug crimes and did not come from particularly privileged backgrounds. But at least one of the inmates I assisted had family stay at the Greenbrier while visiting her. There certainly were inmates that did come from more affluent backgrounds. She was after my time, but Martha Stewart is probably the most (in)famous former resident of the prison and I would guess many if not most of her visitors stayed there. There would have almost been something poetic about placing the seat of government right next to a prison. But as the prison serves only women and most of Congress is still made up of men the rhyme falters a bit.
This one time, in college, we played a jazz gig there, and we visited the basement gift shops and bought cigars. Then we half snuck around near the bunker entrance to get a peek at it. The place is relatively massive, and just driving by, you wonder why the loading dock is about the first thing you notice when you see it. Not the usual faire for a high end resort.
The TV series Sylvania Waters! Sylvania does mean trees, Latin I think. I think it would have been a better name for the state. Completely differentiate itself from Virginia. No need to add the"west".
In the same vein, the Diefenbunker - Canada's similar bunker outside Ottawa - might make for an interesting story. I can vouch that it was a fun and interesting, if a bit quirky, tour.
There was rumor of Cass Scenic Railroad to buy the Amtrak rail line going passed the Greenbrier, then again I wouldn't be surprised if West Virginia were to place it under official Historic Preservation so they could do that. If this plan does follow through, that would bring in tones of caps-... Er, I mean... Tourism dollars to the area connecting the entire Valley with steam locomotives from the Greenbrier to Elkins, WV. They could go crazy with it and connect the ski resorts all along the mountains too. That's of course if someone doesn't nuke it for XP grinding and legendary hunting...
Hey I would like to see a Geographics video about the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India! I visited the temples and caves recently and was absolutely astounded. Unfortunately I didn’t have a guide so it was just me and my yoga teacher walking around.. but please do a deep dive into it! If I remember correctly, it was built over 400 years (out of a friggin granite mountain!) and included work and design from the Indian Hindus, Islamic Moguls, the Jains, Buddhists... and was actually something the Moguls didn’t destroy but further helped to create.

I worked at a marina in Florida during the 90s. The owners of the Greenbriar had a yacht there. They needed a babysitter for a New Years Eve party so I had my teenage step sister go to the yacht and watch the kids. They did her right. But, they were very snobbish and judgemental. I had to clean their yacht before they came to town. As I'm cleaning, I see a tray with what looked like a joint on it in the galley on the cabinet. Well, I figured maybe someone had cancer or whatever. Then, when they got to town, all hell broke lose and I was accused of leaving a joint in their yacht!!! Really, well it wasn't me but they never trusted me again and that was that. But honestly guys, it wasn't mine lol.
Saw the thumbnail. Thought it looked just like the Whitespring in Fallout 76. Started watching the video. It IS the Whitespring. Realized the name change was just removing the Sulphur from the old town name and mashing it together.
