This movie speaks to the male struggle greater than you can ever know. It took me a long time to understand what it meant. Thought it was a survival thriller with wolves in it. Only realized later that it was about depression, loss, and the silent pain men go through. We're told to stay strong, grin and bear it. But sooner or later we break. Crying out to a higher power for guidance. Goddamn.

Truly, i agree, one of the most powerful, and wholly relevant and important scenes in recent cinema. @white christian because it's too hard for god to just forgive us right? He needed to come down himself to let people kill him in order to forgive us. If we mortal humans who have messed up cortisol producing and anger yielding brains, can forgive others, then what about the creator of the universe who has no primal emotions? We humans work hard our whole life to reach enlightenment in order to forgive others easily. And some people call this state of being a divine state. But if the divine needs sacrifice in order to forgive then screw this god i dont need his forgiveness

I'd say it's not that it doesn't care..... It's simply that to interfere is stop things being natural. If you wanted things to naturally pan out, for a purpose.. But then you suddenly started interfering and changing things..... Then it'd no longer be natural. All that comes from that moment on.. Would be influenced by your "supernatural" interference".

Woodland Warrior That is far from the truth. You see, if God doesn't care about us, why would he sacrifice his own son to us? Why would he ever even communicate to us if he didn't care? The Bible says many times that humans will have many problems in their life, whether death, illness or in this case hopelessness. God didn't bring suffering into the world. It was us who did, do to our sins and wicked ways. Because God loves us, he hasn't given up on us. If you believe in him and truly want to have a real relationship with him, everything should work it's way out.

Of course this is a fictional scene, but there is something so undoubtedly real about it. Maybe that says something about my own faith, that I'd expect the same response from God. And I do believe in God. Many have suffered the way Liam's character is in this scene, and worse. But humanity is learning just how responsible we are for ourselves, and each other. I watched this scene, and it made me think of my life over and over for what I have done in it! What does that mean? It means that I have hurt the people that I loved the most, and I can never forget that pain that I have caused to them. A lot of them has passed on, and I never got that chance to making it right. Now I am sitting at my desk writing this and I don't really know why I am doing this, but then again I am finding some kind of peace in knowing that I am not alone in this world, that many feel the pains that I am in, because they are experiencing them right now in there own ways. The only thing that keeps me alive is my dogs and that there is hope in the darkness that is around us all. I can not give up on hope or my dogs for that matter, and if God is in the presence I hope that he can find that peace that I searching for in the last 48 years of my life. In the end, I was in the military and I seen the power of God, I have seen the angels at work saving many of my friends and many people that I never ever got to know. The point of this all is if God can do this for people, I pray that he can find me that peace that I have always been searching for. Take care everyone and truly stay blessed. I think this scene changed me. Ive always had this question about life that demanded to be answered. ive seeked answers from different kinds of people from strong believers to priests/pastors. Ive also tried seeking from different kinds of religion (islam, evangelists, jehovah, roman catholic), but essentially, no one could provide me a convincing answer. I eventually gave up. And as i grew older and learned more about the mankind, its history and crisis of current events of the whole world, it is there that ive found the answer to it. No holy plan or holy prophecy etc, just plain, simple & uncomplicated answer. Its also the same moment that i lost trust to humanity and loved animals morethan people. I think religion is a fraud, spirituality on the other hand is beneficial in finding peace amidst a chaos.

But within that, don't be afraid....because we won't know about it...just as with the billions of years BEFORE we were born, we won't know about it AFTER we die...so we need not fear.

Everyone in the comments acting like they know God's plan. In reality how many people ask themselves, how much of this suffering is self provoked? How much of my hand did I actually deal to myself? And as for death, death is a certainty in life. And death does not run on your time, or anyone else's. The world is full of evil, traps, and sin. But it's also beautiful. Love, relationships, prosperity. All I'm saying is don't blame God or cast him out because of how your reacting to situations. What was before god? Who began God? If god doesn't need an explanation, why must the universe? Humans have never seen anything created, only changed, who's to say that creation is even possible? Is it not possible that everything exists eternally and merely sways from one form to another? Isn't it possible for there to be no such thing as creation OR destruction? We don't even know if there is such a thing, as nothing.

It's really whichever way you want to look at it. The way I see it, the universe exists for a reason. Why is there something instead of nothing? Clearly because there's something beyond it that we have no ability to comprehend or understand. Every time I look at the universe, think about how it all came into existence randomly 13 billion years ago it leads to the question of why and it always leads back to "there must be something more". That along with the mystery of consciousness and the mystery of how life even exists at all.

Poor Liam Nesson's character thought he got nothing out of this little rant with God. But if anything, God gave Liam's character two things at the end: strength, and courage. Because if you've seen the end of this film, and how it ended. You'll know what I'm talking about.

@Caesar It's not. This scene was a matter of a debate on my university (we were talking about the movies and stuff) - and many brought many theories, include that God indeed existed here and listened to him. There were thousand of theories and everyone agreed that every single one was right. The one WITHOUT a God and how did it impacted, the one WITH the God and how did it impacted. Everyone agreed that this scene could be saw in thousand different ways, yet every way was right. We were mind-blowned, including the professors who were listening to the debate. P.S. Believing in God (as far as I know for orthodox Christianity) means believing in yourself too. I think the same goes for any other type (including catholic) Christianity.

I recently had to put my furbaby down, he was the light of my life, I cannot have children of my own so my love for him was that much deeper. It was very sudden so it's not like he was sick & I had time to process it all or make his last few days or weeks or months more memorable, it was very last minute & it was the worst decision of my life. I didn't eat for 6 days, slept maybe 20 hours in those 6 days, I was having hallucinations because I was so sleep deprived & my body was starving, I was also drinking heavily those 6 days. After the 6th day I finally forced myself to eat & it felt really strange & the food tasted so weird. I ended up moving back home into my mother's house, I've been doing better, been seeing a therapist, moved to part time work for the time being. Some ppl say it's just an animal, why get so worked up. All I can say is well, if you have children imagine losing them, how heart broken would you be, or what if you've always wanted children but found out you can't, that's why I love my Max so much, he is my son from a different species, species could never make us any closer than we were. I highly believe in reincarnation & I believe that one day when I'm ready for another cat it may just be him in there, I will go to a shelter & sit on the floor & let him choose me.

I love this movie! I have the dvd. I have a totally different take on this movies theme. Of course it is about survival and loss. But first I don't agree that it was “realistic” in the plot. (I know the idea is for them to all die) And its just a movie. But a little more common sense thinking would have been better) Leaving the plane without first gathering up all the valuable items. The plane is made almost entirely out of aircraft grade aluminum. Doors would make great wolf shields for defense or slowly advance and kill them. All kinds of sharp aluminum pieces to make spears (instead of green sticks). Gang up and eliminate them one at a time. Seat material or tarps from baggage areas could make thick warmer defensive body coverings. Lots of knives in the kitchen area? He obviously had a rifle when he shot the coyote at the start of the film. And he found it broken in two after the crash. If he had the rifle shells for it and had the barrel so he could load a shell in the chamber and then hit the primer with something it would have worked far better than the bang stick idea. Which would not worked with sharpened green sticks. Primers are hard to pierce. The knives they used to whittle the sticks would be better “lashed” to the sticks! And they were shotgun shells that he found in the snow. But they didn't show a shotgun at the beginning of the film only a rifle. I know getting picky... its just a movie ..but just my take. My idea of the main moral of the story is that the plane was “meant” to crash, and “everyone” was supposed to to be killed on impact. Ottway would have died along with everyone else. Talgit (Dermit Mulroney) talks about it being pre-ordained that they all survived. My take it was the opposite. It was pre-ordained for “all of them” to die. But God changed his mind. Ottway doesn't believe in God. He rejects any thought of salvation and blames God for the death of his wife. He talks about regret for things he has done. And when he contemplates taking his own life, God punishes him. He lets some of the passengers live, so he will have to help them try and survive and witness their deaths first hand. To finally understand the meaning and beauty of life. To fight for it. And believe in the heavenly value of it. And his father is hopefully in heaven rejoicing in his sons acknowledgement of the legacy of his poem. Diaz (Frank Grillo) Also has his soul re-deemed by finally understanding the beauty around him in the end. In the ending scene when Ottway goes through the wallets of all of the victims (who became his friends) The tremendous grief and emotion he is portraying, always hits me hard (what a fantastic job my Liam). The regret, remorse and embarrassment he feels for his selfish “near tragic” act of death from his own hand. In that instant he understands why God did not help him when he looked to the clouds. He told God to “Earn It”!.. Earn my faith!...But it's supposed to be the other way around. That's why it is called “Faith” in God. Life can be difficult, but it is still a gift, and is "Precious". “Keep the Faith” people! And when I mean "Faith" I don't mean just God, or anyone's version of a creator. I am not a church goer, I am 64. I have had some tough days. The bible to me is just words that man passed down from generations. Take it as you wish. Hell is right here on earth every day! And getting worse by the minute. But all around us also is "Heaven" . "Life", amazing creatures, plants, blue sky. And million's of acts of kindness and heroism every day. In the face of all this madness. Life and the earth can be so beautiful, and amazing. My bible is in the sky at night. Look up and see those billions of small twinkling dots.. and tell yourself "honestly" is there nothing out there. All of this beauty came out of all of that vastness. And who knows what's in store for us next. Love and Good" are "Real' and do "Exist"! Keep looking up! 😊😊❤👍Another great movie to check out if you haven't seen it is "Cloud Atlas"! It will definitely make you think about "Life and Death"! Another thought just popped into my head. I “think” a lot! And I love to write, as you can tell! How about a plot twist? Just as Ottway meets the dominant wolf head on.....he suddenly wakes up! And he is back on the plane. It is still flying fine and all of the other cast members have just woken up as well. They say nothing, but just look around at each other in disbelief. The plane lands safely, and they all come together but still are silent just looking at each other with pale faces. Ottway turns to them and says...any of you fellows want to join me in a cup of coffee?...I like that ending!

I suggest to you that it is because God loves us that he gives us the gift of suffering. Pain is God's megaphone to rouse a deaf world. You see, we are like blocks of stone out of which the Sculptor carves the forms of men. The blows of his chisel, which hurt us so much are what make us perfect. C. S. Lewis

If god exists, he is more complicated than the galaxis and all the space, so by your logic he could not come from nothing, someone or something had to do an action to start him. and thats the problem, if you are going to say god always existed, there is no reason to say that the universe didn't always exist

If I could recommend another movie it would be the anime Graveyard of the Fireflies. It shows immense suffering, and also shows the choices or lack of human interest in creating solutions. We're responsible for one another. Any mature atheist/theist can see that. But that does not mean the universe is Godless.
