Love this film because it strips you of all the bs. It is not just about how to meet your end; how each man met his end revealed how he viewed and lived reality. Some held religion above everything else, some pride and ego, some family, some the external beauty and stimulation. All of those things matter, especially family, but when almost everything is stripped away, true life is revealed harsh and beautiful. You are existence, you are everything from the rock to the building. You are the culmination of hundreds of years of evolution of life. All that was and is manifests itself in you. Your own life and purpose matters, but in a survival situation all notions on reality that you may have are insignificant. The separation from the mortality and other life is dissolved. Live like you're in and extended version of this movie because you are. Tape that knife to your hand and live life to the fullest.

This is a metaphysical, spiritual movie. The angry prayer that the protagonist makes to God at the end of the film has already been heard at the beginning. God finally grants him the grace to die fighting.
@flightofthebumblebee9529
@flightofthebumblebee9529 Год назад
Absolutely. People said how a helicopter or something should have appeared during that prayer but I think that would've ruined the film completely and obliterated the message behind it. The wolves saved him from killing himself (howling) and then later gave him the ability to fight to survive and "want that next breath". Amazing film. Probably way too deep for most people.

@@aamesworld exactly. The fact that he says "I'll do it myself" and then places the wallets in a crucifix shape, before strapping up for his last fight he'll ever know, tells me that God WAS listening and gave him the strength to continue. The post credits scene and another pic from that scene heavily indicate that the alpha and Ottway both kill each other and die laying on top of one another. I guess it's also possible that Ottway lived and was eventually found with the GPS tracker from the watch that John Diaz gave him. This film is amazing and doesnt dare spoonfeed the audience and I love that soooo much. Ottway in the beginning, walking into an extremely loud and wild bar full of people but drowns it all out to silence is a PERFECT depiction of depression and loneliness. As was the dream after the crash where he's in bed with his wife (who we don't know is dead yet) and is suddenly YANKED from under the covers of her warm embrace back to the cold freezing harsh reality of the aftermath of the crash. This film is literally "next level" type brilliant.

Do it. Live life how you want. Sometimes you have to give up small creature comforts for a while to get there but its worth it. Find a small town in the mountains. Look for work anywhere you can there.. There are always jobs. Maybe you could even find a farm or a ranch somewhere that would give you a place to sleep, warm meal and a little bit of pay in exchange for your hard work. The world is a huge place my friend. Dont spend your life wishing you did this and that only to regret not doing any of the things you dreamed of when you're on your death bed and its too late. Don't get trapped in the rat race like the majority of people. You could die any second. I know you're probably going to read this and get a small spark of courage but then you'll let it die and then forget you ever read this. Don't do that. Gather kindle for the spark and let it burn.

This movie moved me in ways that maybe 1, 2 others have in 40 years of watching movies. God granted his desire to die, but instead of suicide which would've taken him to hell, he was granted the death of a fighter. He wasn't too fond of the others yet honored them in the end. He became a leader whereas he started as someone who wanted to die alone. The transformation doesn't beat you over the head with its obviousness however it does show us what courage in the face of insurmountable odds looks like when a man is truly left to ask himself "Do I want to keep on living?'.

From Wiki: „According to Empire magazine, in the climactic scene in which Neeson's character pens a letter to his wife, Carnahan urged Neeson to "channel his grief" over the death of his wife Natasha Richardson.“ Understandable why this performance is one of Liam Neeson’s better ones.
@oriantalist
@oriantalist 11 месяцев назад
The wolves in this symbolise the demonic forces of evil. Ever at work, relentless, unforgiving. One by one they devour each of the surviving members of the plane crash. Until Neeson faces the apex predator itself. The Alpha of the forces of evil. The wolf descends from the high ground, while the beaten up, worn out, exhausted, barehanded Neeson straps on some blades, broken glass vials and anything that he can find that will arm him against his nemesis. Then they fight. Thankfully, actual wolves are nothing like portrayed in this movie. They're loyal pack hunters.
@dars5229
@dars5229 8 месяцев назад
I don't think the wolves in this are evil. I think they're death. Death isn't evil, just like life isn't good. Death just is. Whether or not he succeeds, Liam Neeson's character makes it to a place where he fights death rather than giving up to it.
@oriantalist
@oriantalist 8 месяцев назад
@@dars5229 Tl;Dr version: that's another way of looking at it. Thank you. ------------------------------------ That's another lens to view the entities hunting Liam and his crew as. Essentially they do terminate the crew one by one down till the last one. They're relentless, cold, brutal. Attributes that characterize death. However just viewing it using the logical lens which focuses on tangible facts divorced from the subjective human experience rooted in the humanities doesn't account for the full picture. Essentially the field of ethics versus science. Science deals with the understood observable properties of our existence which inherently do not have good or evil properties. Death is one such property which at its surface is neither good nor evil. However scientific discoveries, which are then applied, have far reaching ethical implications and consequences of their own. This is where the fields intersect. The field of Law and Jurisprudence is also derived from and is a subset of the field of Ethics. In a similar vein, the number of homicides (in other words deaths) in a community can be measured as a statistic. However, the circumstances of each death are different, there are different severities/gradations of each crime (read evil). So, yes, the victims did all die. However they all suffered differently and their loved ones must be compensated by due retributions sanctioned by the laws of that community. And the (evil) criminal must face justice for the safety and sake of the entire community. There are ethical consequences for letting a criminal roam free which affect the entire community. This is the human element. The statistics do play a role and should influence decisions on the macro level. However, one cannot be indifferent to the ethics at play at the micro level that need to be addressed as well. In conclusion, reality can be viewed through multiple lenses. Each painting a different picture at various levels of abstraction. Which are all significant in understanding the human condition.

No. Adding the context in the beginning makes the scene more powerful.

the context is crucial, we need understand what sort of people he's surrounded by, what sort of people he groups himself with.

I think the lead up to 1:12 (or just before that) is necessary to appreciate that powerful moment when the raucous noise and scene fade away as he mournfully reflects on his lost wife. Compelling.
