A lot of people hate on the gti but having owned 3 of them mk2 8v gti, mk4 1.8t anniversary and mk5 gti. I still think they are the best daily car money could buy today.

I own an mk4 and an mk5. I've driven 400+ HP muscle cars, trucks, SUV's etc and they don't match either of my GTIs. Most fun cars I've ever driven and quite affordable indeed! Never getting rid of them.

People dont get the GTI. After mk4,5,6. I got my MK7. 228HP, 266TQ, MORE THAN FACTORY CLAIMS. 1000$ tune and downpipe, 333HP 377TQ. Stupid numbers for a little car.

My dad used a vw rabbit diesel when he was a teen as a" work truck". His sister had blown the engine in it, and rebuilt and reinstalled it in one day all by himself, literally lifting the engine up barehanded and dropping it in! Then he bolted a receiver hitch to the rear bumper to tow his boat." He's a commercial fisherman". He said he remembered slamming on brakes with the boat behind him and went clean through an intersection and it still didn't stop! He said he also remembers being able to drive anywhere he wanted for two weeks on eight dollars worth of non highway diesel. " tractor diesel"

Please do this all over again but with more information it needs to be updated & I will gladly watch it over & over & over.

My first car was a mk1. Swapped a 2l from the golf 3 GTI and put some work into it. On some coil overs and good tyres that little creature flew like shit off a stick. Still the best car I've ever had. The reason I love golfs. The reason I love vw. Regret selling it so much.

I own a Burgundy 1991 Volkswagen Cabriolet Etienne Aigner Edition. Wanna talk special edition? look up those numbers. A whole 98 Horsepower to its name, but still smoked old square body camaro in 1/4 miles because of its weight to power, and front wheel drive.

Firstly, the MK5 is not ugly. Sure, prettier cars have existed, but the MK5 is not ugly. Second, at least the MKV GTI looked different from a base model.. at a glance, the MK4, MK6 and MK7 GTI basically look like a regular golf, but the very different grill, painted front end and the different side and rear body moulding of the MK5 made it stand out. Also.. - It was as fast (actually had to be limited) as the MK5 R32 - One of the first production cars to use a DCT - It basically started the overall look that then flowed into the MK6 and MK7, the 'Denver' wheels it had are nearly identical to the MK6 wheels, and even the MK7 wheels look very similar - It was the generation that made the GTI a great car again. The VR6 of the MK3 was a pretty big engine for a hatchback that was quite unreliable and not that powerful, and the MK4 was.. really slow. The MK5 GTI was one of the cars that made hot hatches (actually HOT, like a powerful small car, not a warm hatch like the MK4) a big deal again, a bigger deal than before. We're still seeing the effect of it now, 12 years later, with the new Focus RS, the Focus ST, Golf R, Audi S3 and RS3, AMG A45, whatever else. So don't be dissing the MK5, it did more for small performance cars than you might think.

You guys should really remake this video, with today’s enthusiasm. For a car that James’ has owned 12 I think it deserves a remake.

I take everything bad I said about the GTI back. Love it. James needs to redo this vids. Seems like he just got into a fight with his dad.

By the way, some of the variations of the MK4 Golf platform were stunningly gorgeous, and fast! Of course, the precursor to the current Golf R was the awesome R32. HPA made a twin turbo version that hit 60 MPH in 3.2 seconds too! Then there was the '337' and '30th Anniversary Edition', both GTI's. In my opinion, the '337' GTI, in silver (Google it), was the best looking GTI ever! Great German lines!

I've only owned one Volkswagen. It was a tan Golf...like an lx type model or something. I needed a car an friend of a friend of a friend type deal came up for $200 for a running car. No dents or dings. Good paint. Clean tan interior with cloth seats that had no issues. It had the smallest engine possible with a 4 speed stick. I have to say it was fun even being gutless. Rode smooth. The cabin was well sealed so it was dry and quit going down the road. One morning I was getting the kids ready for school so I could go to class and the car was gone. I knew it should be in that spot so I went to the apartment office to ask if they had it towed for some reason and they said no. Then someone else came in asking the same question. Then someone else. Turned out our complex had been scoped out by a group that in one night took 9 cars. All cars with no alarms, fairly basic with the same things in common. They all were in great condition, no one had alarms, they were all easy to break into and hotwire. Most important they were all base models of cars that also had popular sport models associated. My Golf, a Lancer, Camero, Eclipse and such. A few weeks later the police contacted me and said they found my car. I went to the tow lot and the car now had ground effects, a wing, bigger wheels, paint, but no motor. This group was stealing cars and shoddily fixing them up in various ways to turn them as sporty cars with swapped vin numbers. The car looked better but I had no money to put a motor in it. The tow lot gave me $200 for scrap and I went car shopping again.

OK Donut, this is serious. I know you guys love VW as much as I do, and I especially love the Golf, I always loved the car, and then I bought an 05 TDI Golf and a 92 Gold Diesel and have loved the car forever. But there is one VW I haven't owned and it is my dream car, so can we PLEASE get an episode on the 90's VW Corrado. This car is so sexy and will 100% eventually be a collectors car. Please review the VW Corrado, which i think I've spelled correctly, maybe not lol.

I'm restoring an 88 Cabriolet, I just refer to it as a Rabbit GTI Convertible beacuse that's pretty much what it is. One of the best things about the Mk1/2 VW's is that the parts are almost all compatible with each other, so for example I'm pumping my 1.8l up with a 16v airbox, bigger throttle body, ported intake mani and a stainless header with the only aftermarket part being the header (and only because it's cheaper than getting the individual parts for a 4-2-1 exhaust from other VW's) The GTI has always been my dream car, and I hope to own an ACTUAL one someday. Can't wait to get my Cabby on the road though.

Awesome video but couple of corrections /clarifications: One - There was a Rabbit “Sport” sport version with red trim but not real performance upgrade around 1980. However, the first GTI-badged US Rabbit appeared in 1983 with a 1.8 liter making 90 HP. The standard Rabbit engine up to that point was a 1.7 liter making 74 HP. So, the GTI, in addition to better suspension, was 16 HP (not 1 HP) over the standard Rabbit engine but still short of the 110 HP that Europe was getting. Even so, the econocar based “GTI” with its light weight and 90 HP would give performance cars of the same era (Mustang, Trans-Am, etc.) a run for the money and handle better to boot. Two - VW did not invent the hot hatch. There was a hot version of the Mini Cooper in the 60’s and Simca introduced a performance version of the 1100 in the early 70’s. That said, VW was the first to turn the hot hatch into a huge success and create a movement for the class, as a whole. I am a hero! - (2) Mk1, Mk2 16V and Mk7 TSI

My first new car was MK4 24v VR6 GTI. My favorite. My second was a Mk7 TDI Golf SE. My current car is a Mk7.5 GTI Autobahn. Love them all.
