The Guess Who: Running Back Thru Canada (2004) The Guess Who is filmed for a concert in their hometown of Winnepeg during a 2000 cross Canada tour. www.imdb.com/title/tt1356910/
Saw them playing this live in 1972 at Western Springs, Auckland, New Zealand - almost the same lineup except Kurt was in the band then. They opened for Three Dog Night but should have been the headline act. Guess Who were amazing - this brings back happy memories. I'm almost 70 and this makes me want to get off my ass and dance!! 👍👍👍
I saw them the same year in Adelaide, Australia. I was 15 and at 66 I’m still a big fan and would listen to their music nearly every day. I went to see The Guess Who and came out loving Three Dog Night too.
The Winnipeg boys performing back in their hometown of Winnipeg. The thunderstorm and the rain didn't deter the fans. It was a great homecoming concert and didn't disappoint.
I would agree with you with one caveat. The Band was an incredibly talented and sophisticated group and influenced many other bands. They weren't purely Canadian though. Four of its five members were from southern Ontario. Levon from Arkansas. The Guess Who and The Band would be 1 and 1A in my book. Rush, The Tragically Hip, and April Wine belong in the second tier. Greatest Canadian soloists... Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Brian Adams.
I'm in Sydney Australia. Bunkered down because of the heat, bushfires and smoke and found this gem. Thanks for posting and thanks to the Canadian fire fighters who are here helping us.
From Vancouver Island. I was honored to play a benefit gig to raise money for the Canadian firefighters going to Australia. Played My Own Way To Rock in our set. I was raised in Manitoba and of course Burton was a big deal. My Dad bought me an electric piano (my first keyboard, a Hohner pianet) in 1969. He told me it had belonged to Burton, but I never verified that.
It was a hot and steamy night with the temps in the 30's. Despite the rain, none of the fans left, just happy to have the Guess Who back performing in Winnipeg.
I was in my first year at the University of Windsor. In 1974. There was a large party at the university pub with a band we needed to recognise. They played some guess-who, and it dawned on us that it was Randy Bachman's band after leaving the guess-who. A great night.
First saw them in early 1970, and nothing has changed! Their talent took them to the top. Garry Peterson, back there on drums like the other members made it effortless. Very underrated group, but their talent has stood the test of time.
grew up northern ND...would see their bus on I29 once in awhile when they 1st got going..grew up listening to them,,one of my all time favorite if not my favorite group of all time..I never did get to see them in concert..thank you Canada..what a gift
Amazing how well Burton Cummings has aged, he still looks perpetually young In relativistic terms with a voice that still sounds great 50 years later. He has definitely taken care of himself along with the great DNA God gave him!
Burton Cummings Said In An Intreview..In The Midst Of Our Crazy Touring Scedule....70....71....72.....Wed Fly Into A town Jamn....party down.....Fly Into Another Town..do the same thing....And This Went On For So Long....we never knew...where wed been and where we were goin to...wed just drop out of the sky in our jet...and crank out the best rock n roll that a body had a right to!!!!
Remember our old paper dollar with the wheat field on the reverse? If you looked closely you could see Randy and Burton on the highway, heading back to Saskatoon.
As a Rock ‘n Roll aficionado, Randy Bachman, Domenic Troiano and Donnie MacDougall are the greatest guitarists that are underrated. Really, no one else has been better than these 3. This live album is the greatest I’ve ever seen and heard although, directing/production wise, there’s much to be desired. Generally speaking, does anyone believe that The Guess Who was not one of the greatest bands ever? Thankfully the ignoble RnRHOF does not determine who is the greatest.
I'd offer one minor clarification on the Canadian Who's best guitar players.......yeah, for sure, Randy Bachman. Hell, he gets an A+ for guitar, composition, and introducing jazz chord structure into rock..... But, those other guys I don't even know who they are. The missing link your post failed to note was none other than Kurt Winter. Kurt carried lead guitar after Bachman left for a fair number of years and he brought a guitar tone, raw/gritty kind of lead, and speed in the leads and fills that rivaled or exceeded Randy. Winter had a much heavier Rock kind of lead guitar that was so in at the time in the States......guys like Ronnie Montrose, Rick Derringer, Craig Chaquico of Starship, and others.....they were laying down incredible lead scale work setting the stage for the soon to enter guitar shredders like Eddie Van Halen et al. Canada's G-Who never got the acclaim their music/talent warranted. And, Cumming's voice was out of this world. He and Bachman made quite a composition team.
@@davidwinn721 kurt was something else with a guitar, gets no credit. Most people do not even know who he is. Changed the way I see and hear music, really made a big impact on me. I was so happy when Burton released Kurt’s Song.
@@johnedward5520 You have to be into music in order to keep abreast of and assimilate the impact of rock group personnel changes.....and many of us who lived through the Guess Who era aren't even around any longer, so it's little wonder that Mr. W. is more of an asterisk on G-W albums during the Randy hiatus era. But, if you played guitar or listened to it closely, we all knew that Burton was using another lead guitar player on those Share the Land, Albert Flasher, Hang on To Your Life time period recordings. All those albums featured Winter on lead, and I was just a poor teenager in the States and guitar hack who laughed out loud and said, that isn't Bachman on those tunes. But few listened or even cared or understood. Winter was incredible....RIP.....and as I said, the band and Burton, Randy and Kurt don't receive the acclaim their musicianship/output warranted. Just a great body of music....and great players.
Been a big Bachman fan forever. He is SO talented. And, he can play ANY style. Somewhere there's a video of him playing with Chet Atkins.. (and perhaps even Les Paul)
I like that when Bachman plays a solo that was originally done by Kurt, he stays fairly true to the original. Shows his class. You can hear this even more in some of the other songs in this show.
One of my favorite bands, many a Band here in New Zealand did great renditions of the Guess Who songs, it reminds me of great days and nights at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand's oldest and most highly regarded University. Albert Flasher was probably their number one hit here....although American Woman was probably next but we didn't identify with it probably as much due to our location being Down Here and Down Under and Proud of it.
I hear that Mark and agree! I am not a Canadian, but was eyeshot of Vancouver Island. These lads were a big part my life back to "shakin' all over" and "These eyes". Yikes I'm old! When did THAT happen 🤔
Saw the G H in north of Michigan maybe 10-15 years ago….Got to hang with drummer Garry before the show!I asked if they were going to play this..he said it wasn’t in the set list..but..in the middle of the show..they played it !..Thanks,Garry!
No. 1 in my book. The Band is #2. After that … BTO, Rush, Triumph, Barenaked Ladies, April Wine, Ligthouse, the Diamonds? Not sure if any of these were better than the Guess Who … we're talking "bands" here, right? Not solo artists.
@@Odosagih - Well, ... it's no insult to say that The Band would be #1 in many books - but the Guess Who are right there at #2. This iteration of The Guess Who was maybe it's best (Kurt Winter would sure have been a nice addition - RIP). Can't believe McDougal is getting such a tube tone out of that Yamaha amp. Yamaha?
@@davidcarter2720 The Band was a phenomenal band but Levon Helm was American and had such an impact on their sound that I would hesitate to say The Band was purely Canadian, although 4 of its 5 members were. The Guess Who were 100% Canadian. 1 and 1a imo as Canada's greatest bands ... Rush would be a distant 3rd. I may even put April Wine ahead of Rush, even though Rush received more mainstream attention.
No wonder they say that Randy is amongst the top 10 guitar players of all time. Right on. A real Canadian legend. /// thanks for posting. I was born in Winnipeg; didn't live far from Burton in the North End. // I saw Burton barely able to sing after Randy's guitar solo in the middle. Man, that was impressive.. Plays that harp like his tongue. :)
who are "they"? ....I agree, he's good and I love his radio show, but top ten....maybe top 10 Canadian guitarists, but that's even pushing it...Think about it...Alex Lifeson, Rik Emmitt, Colin James , Jeff Healy, Liona Boyd, Dutch Mason, and that's just off the top of my head...think before you type.
A performance buried in Canadian content! The only thing which could make it better would be if the concert were actually in Saskatoon! This is on the shortlist of great performances of this song!
Probably because they were too Canadian, and Americans wouldn't understand their music or lyrics. Another Canadian band, The Tragically Hip, never made it big in the States for exactly the same reasons. It wasn't just American Woman and No Time that got extensive air play in the US, These Eyes also did well on the charts.
@@stevestruthers6180 Guess Who got a lot of AM airtime and they easily made the transition to FM radio in Chicagoland. It wasn't just the two tunes I mentioned, either. We're also fortunate to hear cuts from Burton's debut solo record. I'm glad there wasn't a short studio version of "Saskatoon" released for AM airplay. No way it would have had the electricity of the six minute live version. I personally don't think Canadian artists were given short shrift by American radio. Then again, I don't work for Billboard so I really don't know.
@@bigdmarine Yeah, we alll know they hit it with more than American Woman and No Time. I was just making a point. Throw in the success of BTO and it's obvious Americans liked the sound.
As I get old, this will by my prairies anthem. My dad was born in GEM Alberta. Lots of native sounding names here as well as Northern USA prairie states.
Clearly you are unaware of the greatness of the Guess Who, their influence from 1964 , and the collaborations they have done. Cummings and Bachman can be truly considered the CANADIAN SUPERGROUP, that spawned so many other bands (much like the American equal of Buffalo Springfield/Hollies)
I just watched this particular video again, and I am a bit surprised that the guys went onstage despite the REALLY BIG electrical storm which befell them all just before the concert.
True story.. Back in the day (of 8 track tapes) I was pretty heavy into blues stuff. I had a couple Canned Heat LP's , and recommended them. to a close friend. We talked a few days later and he said "This isn't at all what I was expecting". He slid it in the tape deck and we thought what the Hell is that? He popped it out and it was "Canned WHEAT" by TGW. He returned it for something heavier... and about a week later, we both bought it again. Loved TGW and BTO ever since!
nice double guitar attack from either side of the panscape. What a rush it would have been to see these guys sing this "Home grown" tune in their home town.
The band is one of the best. But I got to say. Donny m. Is a dam good good gartar plaryer no body ever gives him credit for it. Keep up the good work buddy
My wife grew up in the toughest hood in Canada, the north end of Winnipeg. She remembers quite well partying and hanging out with Cummings and the Bachman brothers. She even crashed one of the Bachman brothers motorcycle into the wall of a house. LOL
