Just strong fundamentals and being able to determine notes through pitch (usually experience). Pitch is important because sometimes you’ll have diminutive notes or something else in a chord or arpeggiated phrases. Usually lead notes are in an upbeat which can help you tell which time signature someone is playing in. You know the cadence and the chord progression with whatever wonky notes they put in and you can sight read something like this fairly quickly If you want to learn more there are tons of courses teaching violin, which I think is the easiest beginner instrument to understand things like “what’s an octave… what do these notes sound like…” etc and then you learn basic music theory and you can move onto guitar tablature. One book I recommend everyone learning guitar pick up, or even if you want to learn about guitar and not play is the Guitar Grimoire by Adam Kadmon.

While I appreciate trying to keep some level of skill or ability as a measure of competence, as you say - it's an art, and art is appreciated by the receiver. This is why we have 'pop' music. If you want to understand this style look at Manitas De Plata. So good, and self taught. His guitar was drawn on by both Picasso and Dali. John Steinbeck also was a super fan. By the 1970s he had sold close to 100 million albums, before the internet and global marketing. His sons and nephews carried on the tradition in forming The Gypsy Kings. For a contemporary guitar genius, look for Matteo Mancuso. Revolutionary technique and improvisation maturity far beyond his years. At 21 he was getting Al Dimeola and Steve Vai praising him as equals or superior as a guitarist.

I think you better listen and see the album and documentary of paco de Lucia 's carrear. You will learn a lot of things very important about what you don't know and don't understand about flamenco music. Just listen to paco's music( entre dos aguas, potro de Rabia y miel buleria with camaron de la Isla, el panuelo ,almoraima, reflero de Luna taranta..etc..) and don't forget the greatest old player like Nino Ricardo, sabicas, Ramon Montoya etc.. i'm sorry but Manitas is juste a kid in comparution of those great guitarist of History of flamenco..

Ah yes the Flamenco style of guitar, excellent choice in my opinion ja true cousin to the Zambra style of guitar. Although I must confess I have heard some amazing developments in the legendary Fandango style of guitar which of course is due to its rich historical tapestry and body fluidity in an ever increasing quest for perfection. Good show sir!

So how do we start to compare so many amazing guitar players over the past decades? We as an audience of a number of genres judge music. Roy Clark has been said to be the most amazing, greatest guitar player of the past decades. Then we have players in rock and heavy metal. Eddy Van Halen, who some have called the greatest player ever. Then we have player people have called a virtuoso, like Yngwie Malmsteen. These are some of the greatest guitar player to give us their gifts, and there are more! So how can we say this particular guitar player, “or the master of any other instrument” is the best in the world?

+1 to that. The RH technique can be learned in a few weeks to a few months depending on natural ability. I'm kinda shit at guutar/ukulele and it took me around 2 to 3 months. It is however a very basic skill for flamenco style and definitely considered to be something you learn as a beginner. He had a couple little flair moves in there which showed that he's either a bit more talented than average or has been playing at this level for a while.

Just a bit of FYI the style he's playing here is called flamenco (Spaniard gypsy)which is a mixed of Spanish, Portuguese and Moroccan cultures all rolled neatly into one. They use the guitar as a "drum" that's how they learn to play as the flamenco dancers use it as their rhythm along with castañuelas.
@musashidanmcgrath
@musashidanmcgrath Год назад
This isn't traditional Flamenco, it's sort of using a Rumba palo(one of the styles in Flamenco), but it isn't technically Flamenco. Also, the guitar follows the dancer/singer, not the other way around. And the castanets are not a Flamenco instrument, you're confusing it with classical Spanish dancing, which is not the same as Flamenco - which is a Spanish Gitano(gypsy) music, with no connection to Morocco or Moroccan music. People hear the Phrygian mode and become cinfused.
