Leaning to combine major and minor pentatonic is very effective for rock, blues, country and even metal solos, and this has always been one of my favorites.
Angus Young young has always had a unique ability to combine these two scales, and “You Shook Me All Night Long” was the first time I really became aware of how to see them in action.

My eyes and ears were opened when my old teacher Glen Gerini (R.I.P. buddy) explained the modes... I knew them but I didn't REALIZE I knew them... It was an epiphany!!! God bless you Glen, I miss just BS'ing with you.... Steve, you're cut from the same cloth as Glen and that's the best compliment I could give you.... Keep doing what you're doing.... Peace...

Something that has made a big impact on my playing is Steve Stine. Adding the B on the first string in a minor pentatonic blew me away, and made my solos more interesting. The hammer on exercise (you're right, it sucks) created a lot of strength in my left hand that was never there before. You're a great teacher!

Thanks, awsome video. I don't think people realize how good Angus's ear is and how outstanding his phrasing is. We see him running around like a mad man and wonder how he plays at the same time but we should also be amazed at his note choice and phrasing. It's outstanding. Thanks for bringing that to our attention... Cheers.

I love that Angus was the guy here. I feel like too many guitarists nowadays tend to shrug off the excellent guitar in AC/DC so always great to see some love there. So many times Angus taught me something on guitar. And always in some of the most subtle ways. I think between the solo in Squealer and Rough Boy by ZZTop my early guitar brain was scrambled by the use of pinch harmonics. I had no idea what those sounds were but they were one note gems that just drilled into my musical brain.

I have been chasing the minor, major combined play for a long time. The thing that helped me the most was back in the early 80s I was recruited by a country band that had a need for a guitar player. My name came up and long story short I was a rock/blues guitar player in a country band that was very in demand. The keyboard player sat me down one day and showed me the relative minor for every key on the fret board. Like you I played my ass off in minor keys but hadn't really any knowledge of major keys or the need for seeking them out. It took awhile before the aw-ha to take place. Because the way he explained it was backwards to me. Any way, my solos in that band always seemed to have the need for combined major/minor pentatonics, along with chromatics to fill in some gaps here and there. I've never been the same after that day. I played in two other bands at that point as well. The change in my playing was apparent in those bands as well. So that opened my stubborn mind to the other aspects of music over all areas that I was egnoring. I'm by no means a country style player but that bleeds out in playing a little now. My new challenge is trying to in corporate jazz/fusion in my playing and outside playing as well. So your insight to this area was awesome in that it can be just a couple of suttle moves and everything takes on a new demention. And the simplicity of it can be hard to wrap your head around as well. At least for me any way. Thank you, and take care. 🎸🤓🎸🇺🇸☮

The thing that REALLY helped me to advance up into LEAD guitar was simple blues licks. I played metal rhythm guitar for twenty eight years, gigged and recorded. Then I picked up the guitar one Sunday afternoon played about randomly with some single note melody lines in a Blues/Rock vein similar to 'Moby Dick' by Zeppelin, 'Behind The Wall Of Sleep' by Sabbath etc. Then I begun add to it, I already knew all five positions so I realised I could move up and down the neck doing this, then curiously add high gain, add little speed bursts, building little by little. Each day I moulded an extra session specifying this, I can contribute about thirty or forty percent soloing to my band playing material now after two and a half years doing this.
@periloustemple8290
@periloustemple8290 4 года назад
Man, this really is the ultimate lesson on this. I know there are lots of blues guys - and jazz - that you could have picked, but this tune really has it all, Angus has it all: the show, the look, the chops - but a really lyrical quality about parts and soloing that really reminds me how most people can hum the guitar solo to tunes like Hotel California, Comfortably Numb, etc. Angus has that, too, but he never seemed to serious so I think we all did not notice how crafty it was/is. And speaking of crafty: I am 50 and I can play, It's fine. Whatever, but I think I never saw this part right. I always thought I was slipping into some sort of Dorian embellishment - and while that it kind of true in terms of playing around with min/maj 6th's and 9th's, thinking about it as major/minor pentatonic certainly makes more sense. It is sort of embarrassing to be a kid from Mississippi - on the river and from a blues town - and just really to have had the ah-ha moment from Steve Stine.

The thing about these ac/dc songs is that the songs are actually mostly major anyway. It's pretty common for rock guitarists to solo entirely in minor pentatonic/blues over major keys, but it sounds great when you add in some major. It doesn't work so well the other way around, at least in my experience.
