This is the story about a very powerful nail gun that lost the will to fire, sometimes you try to fix something only to find is too far gone to be fixed again and this is one of them times but from it we learn, and next time we will know the signs before we start.

David you are messing with black arts you know nothing about. As you stripped it, from what i could see, the plunger was half down. This means the piston head is halfway down the cylinder, so the gas charge is not enough to make it fire as the piston is in the wrong place. The usual cause of this is the O rings are worn and dont seal the cylinder on each firing, making the piston stop before returning. Its a simple fix, two new O rings.

@@dmgladden Thanks for your comment and appreciation. As you say we all learn by sharing advice and observations. Its usually the lower ring on the cylinder assembly, but while its apart you may as well change the one on the fan casting too (they are different sizes. Unlike a car engine where the crank drives the pistons back up the cylinder to the next firing stoke, the Paslode relies on a good combustion, as the remnants of the charge go under the piston, from an exhaust port in the exhaust. Its a bit like the concept of a two stroke, but in reverse. If the rings leak significantly, there is not enough exhaust gas to drive the piston back up. To test this, check the pin is right back so the piston is in firing position. Try firing it. Itwill fire but not a second time if this is the fault as the exhaust gas has not driven the piston back up. You can confirm this by checking to see if the driver blade is close to the tip. It should return right into the chamber. If the piston has not returned its usually the O rings.

@@dmgladden Having just watched your video again due to it appearing in my feed, there are a couple of points i could add. Firstly the noise is not it "charging up" as you said near the end, its the fan spinning as the cylinder closes. The fan is in the combustion chamber and stirs the fuel/air mixture to ensure an evenly mixed mixture. Secondly it looks like it could be a later model where the lower O ring has been replaced with metal piston rings. If thats the case theres only ONE O ring, and thats on the fan casting (cylinder head). Thirdly i would also be suspicious of the spark plug. I check fan activation, and for a spark as i rebuild it before the cylinder is fitted back on the handle assembly.

With the cylinder separated from the handle (and gas removed!) it is easy to test the electrical part of the gun by inserting a battery and pressing in the small spring, Illlustration #27 part #404448 and operating the trigger. The fan should come on and you should be able to see the spark jump. If no spark check circuit board, spark unit or fan.

Yes Richard I agree Half a job I am not saying I could have got it working but a bit more as you say open tool testing was needed. So not a "Nice try" as some comments said in my opinion.

Nice repair quandry. I would make sure that the fuel nozzle is not blocked. And if that fails then check that the spark for the fuel is present(magneto?). Then if thats not it then i would paint a thin layer of JBWeld over the hairline crack on the surface opposite the firing chamber. It must have a spark for the fuel...what else could it be??? 🤔

Seems to me that the other micro switch in the circuit (the one that’s activated when you push the fire button) is at fault. All very well getting the fan to run when you push the nose in ( proving that micro switch no.1 works) but micro switch no.2, activated when you push the fire button, has to be good too or else the gun won’t work. These micro switches have a hard life and fail fairly regularly. Trouble is, they are not repairable being totally sealed and tiny as well. A new circuit board is required.

Do you mean the leaf spring with the roller ball on it that gets pushed down by the alloy piston housing (when it moves back about 10 mm) when you press on the nose? it sits in front of the fan mount pivot. 17:01

Hi David - on my IM65 nowadays it only fires about 4 pins then wont fire. I've put new original Paslode gas in and new NMH batteries. I've changed the charger to a NMH charger ( from Ni-Cad) just in case. The fan goes ok. After about 4 shots the flashing green light goes solid. (The old NiCad batteries would go all day) It would seem like a battery issue but I keep buying new batteries and the same thing happens. Any ideas?

I repair these guns and it very much sounds like you have a fan fault. The fan takes a high load from the battery, and if theres a problem with it, one moment the gun is fine the next it flashes a battery fault

When all else fails see if the high voltage unit is working. With the cylinder removed you can depress the switch by hand, watch the fingers when the fan starts and check for spark.
@roberttill3787

this may sound stupid, but did you put nails in before testing, as once the nails are low there is a safety bar that stops firing happening.

what do you mean? My gun is doing the same thing and it had only been used 3 times. It looks brand new. Last time it was used, we changed the gas canister but the gun wouldn't work. I assumed someone had bought the gas and returned it to the store with a replaced spent canister). So now, about 3 or 4 years later, I finally bought a new gas canister for it to make sure the gun worked before selling it. But it still doesn't work. I took it apart and noticed thin blue. . .don't know what to call them. . . they were like little rings around the two screws that hold the thing that slides back and forth??? Anyway, they were broken and I took the bits out of the holes the screws went in. Is that what you are talking about? If not what?

I don't think you can call yourself a repairer, you didn't check the HT coil the best way is take off the spark lead on the head hold it about 2mm away, then depress the switch with the roller on it the fan will start, hold it down then push the trigger switch in, and a spark should jump across the gap. If not the High tension coil can be faulty. Its not rocket science, if you have gas, fan running, and spark it should fire. The unit dosen't need Compression to fire it, it works by filling a chamber with gas and air at the correct mix...then ignition....

I've had that problem, you can take the gas out, leave the battery in and press down on the nose, put your ear near the back end and pull the trigger and you should hear the tick of the spark plug. If thats all good check the stem adaptor, its the red plastic gas tip locator, My one had a crack in it so solved it with a new one, Also change the O rings there are two of them

Harry the cover is designed to do that. It rocks on the pin that holds it shut. The can comes backwards as the cylinder closes, the cover moves up, and round converting the backwards movement to a vertical movement. It presses the can adapter and makes the can discharge a shot of gas. The door is operating properly when it does this.

when dismantling/reassembling the two halves of the gun the spindle coming out of the fan motor can easily bend a fraction causing the fan to slightly catch the insides when running ,then the spindle breaks inside the motor and you need a new motor. I know it happened to me 6:54
