Serotonin: I have been clean and sober - after being a hardcore drug addict until I was 35 years old - for 32 years now, and understand these concepts very well. At about 2 years clean and sober, I had a very important awakening, that showed me that I was going to make it: I was at a park, by myself, on a wonderful sunny summer day, and I was just sitting and watching people, and then I saw this little 3 or 4 year old boy chasing ducks around and just laughing and being a bundle of fun. I just felt joy, and happiness........ for real, and I realized that this was the feeling I tried to find during 20 years of drug abuse....... and that what I was missing was real life, and simple happiness.

I was at 8 months sober from alcohol when I had my miracle moment. During that moment and for the first time in my life, I felt true clarity and faith. I haven’t thought about taking a drop of alcohol since and at almost 4 years clean, life just continues getting better and better

Don't take this the wrong way and get mad at me, but there are a few people out there that tell the truth. The difficult part for us is discerning who. Fascinating. I’m old enough to remember the real estate industry conflating house with home. Initially, it was used because, I believe, houses were becoming harder to buy, and people were being “down-sold” the more affordable condominiums and townhouses. To remove the stigma of not being able to buy a traditional house, the industry massaged housing options into “homes.” Of course, they were also selling the concept of a “home,” a place where love resides, as being the same thing as the commodity “housing,” a collection of walls, floors, and ceilings.
@ladybug5859
@ladybug5859 2 года назад
La Tuna u nailed. I remember looking for a HOME because I had lived in apartments all of my life-- which is for decades --and they would call an apartment a home and they also called it a condo. I didn't know what a condo was as opposed to an apartment and I finally learned it simply means you OWN it. And they like to call it a HOME. YOU rented an apartment & if it was upscale or in an upscale neighborhood-- let's say in South Florida or LA-- they would call it a HOME and it REALLY upset me. IT was cognitive dissonance-- as they say-- because I knew an apartment was NOT at home. EVEN NOW if you live in South Florida in a multimillion-dollar condo where your feet do not touch the ground when you leave your apartment-- especially cuz you might like the penthouse one which is the most expensive --I DO NOT CALL IT a HOME but they do and now I know how it all started

As someone who has lived in a variety of economic/social situations, I have learned that not only does money not buy happiness, poverty actually contributes to happiness (in the absence of crime). Not believing that you CAN have more, allows a human to be content in their world. A famous quote that is just timeless: "I have learned, whatever state I am in, to be content". Our trap is that we are told "You deserve more than I had" and "You can grow up to be President" (you can't, not really) - and so we we are NEVER content with what we have, or our lot in life.... we seek the pleasure advancing, a fast car, a beautiful house, authority over minions but we forego the happiness of spare time to be with friends and family.

We are driven by every aspect of our American world to gain more while being forbidden from relaxing by the knowledge that doing so will land us in ugly poverty and crime ridden slum. We are taught that heaven is our reward after a long life of sacrifice and relentless work. Our entire society is set up to preclude doing anything but struggle or give in to total government welfare and surrender of personal rights. The American system is rigged by corporate and government interests to squeeze the very life blood from its citizens and give them as little time, freedom or possession as necessary to keep the status quo.

I started to see this 15 years ago when i became a teacher- i didn't know what it was, but i noticed a change at work, in people's behavior and asking "what is wrong with people". Control, manipulation and keeping our minds, bodies so busy we have little time to think. It exhausts people...so they can tell us more to do without a fight.

I don't think people are totally ignorant of this information. Take the points he made about cooking. I think a lot of people are working as hard as they can and feeding their families. Convenience and processed foods make it so much easier for working families to eat. I'm cooking more now than I ever have, and it is a lot more time consuming and tiring than I expected. Frozen whole foods have helped me out a little, as have meal prepping techniques. But the reality is, at least for my family, I can pop a frozen pizza in the oven and have dinner on the table 20 minutes later - and no one complains about any component of the meal - no sniffing at the vegetables, complaining about the texture of the protein, the taste of the seasonings - which are the easiest way to add flavor without adding a whole bunch of fat. If I was a homemaker, this wouldn't be that big of a deal. But I have a full-time job, and more cooking has meant a lot more work for me. I admire home cooks who love doing it. I don't.

I'm up to page 64 of The Hacking of the American Mind, and I'm thinking addiction wasn't originally a disability or disease back in pre-history, but an EXTRA ability, that some humans had to make use of stimuli, that wasn't as toxic as we have now. Due to this extra sensitivity these were the humans that actually HELPED our species survive. I don't have that extra sensitivity. For example, I enjoyed a demerol once, it got rid of my headache and gave me energy to do homework with a bit of warm fuzzy. But that's it. It wasn't a glorious high as experienced by Dr Lustig in the book. I don't get any rush from coffee any more either. My son just died of several addictions, and this book is helping me understand what happened. Thank you Dr Lustig. Gaming was his gateway drug.

Few people actually realize how addictive gaming is for young boys. It touches most of the male stimuli - anticipation, chase, risk, competition, near-death experience, arousal and triumph (over enemies). If there were departments for male studies, this would be a top candidate for exploration and prevention.

I have read this book and now watching this "interview" (in quotes cuz its marketing), it confirms my disagreement that pleasure and happiness are drastically different. They are both impermanent, like all things, and that is the important point. Grasping and clinging to either one or your IDEA of either one is what brings suffering. A great Vietnamese zen master once said: Our notions about happiness entrap us. We forget that they are just ideas. Our IDEA of happiness can prevent us from actually being happy. We fail to see the opportunity for joy that is right in front of us when we are caught in a belief that happiness should take a particular form.

4 Cs: 1. Connect - interpersonal connections, extraordinary important for happiness. Face to face connection generates empathy. Empathy activates mirror neurons in the brain. 2. Contribute - contribute outside of yourself. Volunteering, philanthropy. 3. Cope - reduce stress, improve serotonin receptors. 1. Sleep 2. Mindfullness 1. Multitasking - single biggest destroyer of happiness. Only 2.5% population can do 2 things at once. 3. Exercise - lowers dopamine, increases serotonin 4. Cook for yourself 1. High in Tryptophan - rarest amino in our diet. Mostly found in Fish and flax. 2. High in Omega-3 - also fish. 3. Low in fructose

Great interview/talk. Remember that Prof. Lustig (which, BTW, means 'funny' in German) is an expert endocrinologist, not specifically a brain scientist. Dopamine down-regulation and addiction is complex and would easily take an hour, with graphs & charts, to properly discuss. To learn more about the brain science which Prof. Lustig refers to, watch Professor Andrew Huberman's fantastic Huberman Lab podcasts right here on YT.. they're 1.5 hrs long!

I am so glad you are doing this and sharing your knowledge! I will share this too! I agree with what you have said, our country has gotten so commercialized it is ridiculous! We need more farms and trees not more stupid fast food chains! I grew up in CA, we always grew vegetables and fruit i loved going to the farm to buy milk with my mom when i was little. NOw is so sad how they are treated, Cows... We moved to Maine to get away from stress after i had a pituitary tumor removed 31 years ago while i was pregnant.I think i got that tumor from all the Malathion spraying in Ca when i grew up. Maine is beautiful and yes less stress ful but they are slowly and surely commercializing this state too! I get so angry about all this commercialism!
