That lasting shot of Sarah Jane was what a massive character like her deserved, the best companion of all time. Rest in peace Elisabeth Sladen.

If you've watched enough classic WHO , the fact that they land in a quarry and it's actually a quarry " in story" is hilarious.

Sarah Jane has always been one of my favorite companions. She is wonderful in this episode. I sure miss her. Cheers

It was a little sad with Sarah Jane saying goodbye, but this is still one of my favorite episodes.

I love how there has been about 3 characters in doctor who that have become more than companions to multiple doctors but sarah always felt as if she was the true friend of the Doctor. Sarah, Captain jack and River in my mind are the best of friends to the doctor as they have always returned to the show and have met multiple versions of the Time Lord but Sarah was always the original and met the doctor in more of the normal chronological order growing up with him.

Glad to see this one again even if it was much edited. This was my favorite console room on the classic show. Was sad to see Sarah leave. She was the greatest compaion of the classic show

The way Sarah was saying "Eldrad must live" sounded honestly insane! I have this story on DVD! Girl Eldrad is best Eldrad!

I love how a pwrful being who feeds on atomic radiation is defeated with a scarf. This happened all the time with Tom Baker. Sheer cleverness, friendly diplomacy, and innovation with simple household and personal items are his weapons.

Sarah Jane's "Hi" after the Doctor introduces her, is priceless. She was and is the Doctor's best companion.

The Golden age of Dr Who was without a doubt , the 70's, the 3rd and 4th Doctors , and Tom is and forever be the Doctor, and lovely Sara Jane , best companion ever!!! 3rd Doctor & Jo Grant 4th Doctor & Sara Jane 10th Doctor & Rose

It always gets me when you look at the Tardis land and Sarah comes out to then remember that reunion between Sarah and the TARDIS in school reunion. Like 2 characters meeting again at last

Sarah at 12:30: "Careful. That's not as armless as it looks." The Doctor at 26:50: "Well. The gravity of the law finally caught up with him."

The Detail they put in doctor who in the 70s

miss this kind of Who. Did so much with so little. Non sexualized. No companion crush focus. Music not in the forefront of every scene. So nice! "off course are we?" :)

fantastic episode, they originally intended to kill of sarah jane around this point as lis sladen wanted to move onto new things. just imagine if sarah jane never came back after this point, she was such a fantastic actress and I'm glad they brought her back in new who. RIP lis

Probably the saddest goodbyes in Dr who

There is a scene here in which the Doctor is being driven at speed in an olive green coloured Austin Allegro. This is clearly a work of science fiction. The Allegro ('the Agro') was a car that began to rust the moment it fell off the end of the strike ridden British Leyland production line on which it was made. I should know. I owned one of them as my first car!

Tom Baker, God's gift to Who.

Judith Paris is one of the absolute highlights in this story. I love to see her playing Elrad again and again. A very good one from the Baker era.

Tom Baker is Dr. Who. The only Dr. Who I can watch. I like how they used whatever was around because they didn’t have much of a budget. So they made do with the landscape and whatever was available. Ah, the Seventies what a great decade to live in Great Britain. Monty Python and Dr. Who on TV. Good times!

I remember my Mam telling me Tom Baker came to Newcastle. I was still in my pushchair. I still have a signed autograph poster in my wardrobe. Is he still alive?

Austin allegro thats more scary than the daleks

The problem with the character of Sarah Jane Smith in Dr. Who was that what started out as an attempt to break with the screaming assistant trope which started well in the Time Warrior and in The Dinosaur Invasion for example, and introduce a more serious, independent minded modern young woman soon succumbed to the inherent dynamic of the programme. The Doctor's persona, being advanced alien, can't help but overshadow Sarah's. Plus, Elisabeth Sladen's obvious beauty acted against her: viewers expected her to be feminine and cute, and one can't help suspect that she played on this somewhat. Her friendship with the Doctor created a double act that further pulled her away from her original remit: the Sarah we first saw with Jon Pertwee had undergone an irreversible metamorphosis and a nicer version, it has to be said, emerged verging on a one dimensional character. She was still highly watchable, of course, and played the part reall well ; and her rapport with Tom Baker was perfect. It was so desperately sad to hear of her passing and even at my advanced age ( 67 years ! ), I still watch the classic dvds from her era on the programme. R.I.P.

All Eldrad really wanted was a hand! *crickets* I'll see myself out...

And we find out decades later when the 10th Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith do indeed meet again that indeed it wasn’t South Croyden where the 4th Doctor dropper her off - but Aberdeen Scotland! :-) I think it’s also intriguing in retrospect that the doggo was there to give Sarah some company as the TARDIS departed - a rather unusual touch - and the Doctor would send Sarah Jane her own K9 a couple years (relative time, of course) later, tho she didnt get him in his delivery crate until a few years after that! K9 Mk III could have had a whole slew of adventures in late 70’s/early 80’s earth before being boxed up again for all we know, LOL! Anyway, she finally gets the crate and K9 MKIII is activated in “K9 & Company” which was the only spin off of the classic series and oddly can be viewed as the 1st part of a sort of 3 part Pilot (School Reunion from Doctor Who Series 2.2 and the holiday special “Invasion of the Bane” - the series Pilot Proper - being the other 2 pieces of the decades spanning Pilot IMO) that would eventually become the excellent “Sarah Jane Adventures”. Sadly, annoyingly, due to some bizarre and faulty reasoning on Bob Baker’s part to sell a K9 only series (1 season and fairl;y poor quality with no ties to Dr Who or SJA), K9 was only allowed to appear in a few brief cameos during the first series of Sarah Jane Adv before thankfully becoming a (nearly) full time member of the Sarah Jane Gang in Series 3 (the best series overall IMO!). Sadly those same counterintuitive thought processes pulled him back out of the Series after the first 2 episodes of Series 4 (and a brief cameo later) and nothing but a couple quick recap scenes in the last few minutes of the Series finale in Series 5, the last due to Elizabeth Sladen’s untimely death. I’m getting side tracked on K9 - anyway, Sarah Jane made several appearances on Doctor Who becoming the ultimate companion and truly spanning the Classic and New Series. She appeared in The Five Doctors in the classic Series (with K9 at her home) and in several spin off independent productions such as “Downtime” as well as an early series of Audio Adventures and a couple Radio Series with Jon Pertwee and Nicholas Courtney. Then she and K9 appeared in the wonderful “School Reunion” (2nd story Series 2 of New Who) showing fans what its like for a companion post traveling in the TARDIS (hint: everyday earth life is excruciatingly boring as nothing can compare to the splendor and excitement and discovery of traveling in time and space!), as well as growing old while the Doctor regenerated and travels with young companions - certainly many an aging Classic Who fan easily identified with Sarah Jane’s hurt and depression). K9 had broken down some time before but the Doc repairs him - rebuilds him actually after he sacrifices himself to save his friends) and encourages Sarah Jane and the new MkIV K9 to carry on adventuring and fighting the forces of evil on Earth when Sarah Jane declines his invitation to rejoin the TARDIS crew. That leads to the Sarah Jane Adventures, as well as several more guest appearances on the main series, and the Doctor visiting Sarah Jane a couple times as well (the 10th Doctor in the fantastic “The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith” and the 11th Doctor along with Katy Manning as Jo Grant/Jones in “The Death of the Doctor” - both must-see stories for Classic Who Fans!!!! I always admired Russel T Davies exploration of the companions’ lives post Doctor/TARDIS and in addition to the above mentions it must be said having Sarah Jane and Jo meet each other for the first time takes that exploration even deeper, not only to see how companions deal with life but even the knowledge that someone has taken their place in the TARDIS crew, and why the Doctor never comes back to see them (or does he?). Fantastic stuff. Elizabeth Sladen you are sorely missed as are all who have passed as we all eventually will, but until that time we have tons of video, audio, book and other adventures and stories to make this dull existence (well, unless you’re Jo Jones, possibly the only companion to have an earth like as diverse and as exciting and interesting as traveling in the TARDIS!) bearable and even exciting. No wonder these companions seem like real people and even friends to us, especially with an actress as instantly likable and warm and talented as Elizabeth Sladen. Rest In Peace.

Funny how there is an explosion in a quarry and the doctors clothes are all dirty and Sarah Jane is buried under rubble.......then suddenly they have the same clothes on and they are clean LOL

P.s Tom wears a bow tie, but his scarf covers it up.

Fun to come back to this after watching Sarah Jane's reunion with the Doctor (No. 10) in "School Reunion". (I must live! 😆 Hee hee.) Her outfit in this episode also made Sarah Jane look like a cute little schoolgirl of no older than about 12.

Someone should try doing this with the 2020 series of Doctor Who too. You could make a decent 30-minute episode by editing down the good bits from all 10 episodes. OK, maybe that's stretching it a bit - 20 minutes? 15...?

Eldrad must Live

I absolutely hate that they cut out half the episode. How am I supposed to know what the hell is going on?!

Did these air like this or have the BBC abridged the episodes and cut huge parts of the story out to condense it?

I'm going to assume that Eldrad's sex change was explained in some part they edited out here. Otherwise that radiation really packed a wallop after she left the TARDIS.

Oh how i wish the original 16mm elements would still exist for this story… But i suppose the Blu-ray will just be upscaled video copies of the 16mm film scenes :( Imagine how great it would have looked…

Aside from Romana, even tho there was never an episode of either Romana on Gallifrey, I don't believe, exactly how many companions DID make it to Gallifrey? Were Jamie, Zoe and Leela it? And K-9, I suppose.
