Long story short, had a high asvab. Picked infantry. When I got to soi they said I had to become a weapons mos... I could pick between assaultman, mortarman, or machine gunner, just not a rifleman due to my high PT, asvab, and gt score. Picked machinegunner. Best/worst job ever! He's right about not acquiring direct skills for civilian life from an infantry mos, but the soft life skills are priceless if you pay attention. Being the tip of the spear affords you an opportunity to see what really goes on around the world without the media spin. All you have to do is volunteer and stay open to the whole experience. And if you're already in the corps and hate it, just remember, dont regret your decision, because at one point in your life you truely wanted it. Itll be over before you know it because you cant stop time, so enjoy it while you can

My recruiter either failed to mention the ASVAB or I didn't pay attention. I had just finished my last beer after a night of heavy drinking, when the recruiter knocked on my front door and said it was time to take the test. I was a D+ student at best, so he told me not to worry about it and that if I failed, I could take it a second time. I was so drunk, he had to walk me into the hotel to take the test. Long story short, my GT score came out to be 122. I had joined for a 6 year hitch with a desire for the ordinance field. Little did I know, but 2147 (LAV mechanic) fell in the ordinance field. I was told at MCT that the LAV was a big armored vehicle and tha tI'd be working on the weapon systems. That was good enough for me. Then, when I made it to my MOS school, the first thing I saw was a 30 foot painted of a Marine with coveralls and a wrench in his hand and I knew i was screwed. That's when I found out what a LAV mech really was. The instructors said that if anyone fails out, they would go to the next school down the road and become an armorer. I liked that idea and tried to fail out of the mech school. After my 3rd failed test, they had me go see the officer. He chewed my ass and said I was too smart to fail any of the tests and sent me back into the classroom. I absolutely HATED turning wrenches. I tried every legit way to get out that job. I became a Safety NCO, a training NCO, a MIMMS clerk. Heck, I even tried to make a lateral move to Public Affairs to get out of being a mechanic. Yet, as a mechanic, I had a good boss (Maintenance Chief) and I really liked the people I served with, so I stuck it out for the 6 years. When it came time to get out, I was an E-5 and I had no plans or offers to do anything else. I met with the recruiter about reenlisting and was told. 1.) They had spent so much money training me, that they were not going to let me change my MOS. 2.) I had been stationed at 29 Palms for so long, they were not going to let me change my duty station. 3.) If I was going to take the first two options, then they did not need to offer me a reenlistment bonus. I got out, quit drinking, and graduated college with almost a 4.0 GPA. Now, I work for a bank and I pay someone to change the oil in my car. Once a Marine, Always a Marine!

My MOS was a 2871 Test Measurement & Diagnostic Equipment Technician. It was one of the best jobs in the Marine Corps. I worked in a calibrations lab with a bunch of civilian contractors. Remember your contract is fulfilled when your feet hit the ground at MCT. Anything you do to disqualify yourself revert to "Needs of the Marine Corps". You are correct in the fact that you will be guaranteed a job field, not a specific job. This is true across the board. Even Pilots are impacted the same way. A Pilot can be assigned to any aviation type in the Marine Corps.
@cpK054L
@cpK054L 2 года назад
I remember signing the contract, asking specifically for 1371. I got it so easily and wondered why.... got to 1st MarDiv... and with nearly HALF of my class in that unit with almost ALL of them getting a purple heart... I learned quickly why. because 2nd deployment, HALF my platoon was a non-debatable PH recipient. we're talking... broken legs, broken arms, lost an arm, lost a leg, took a bullet to the kevlar, solid concussion Grade III w/LOC, losing both legs, losing an arm and both legs, losing fingers. Marine Corps at the time was trying to plug this MOS, and I was starting to believe they were reducing ASVAB requirements because they were promoting the dumdums and pushing in newbies to replace them.

A million years ago I got out of ITR and they gave me 3516/3531, Motor-T. When I finished Motor-T school I got a secondary MOS of 8151. (Now 8152 Security Force). I did 2 years overseas at a NAS with top sec clearance. After that attached to 3/13, 5th Div, back in Motor-T hauling 105s behind a deuce and a half. As the man said, they will put you where they need you. Go figure.

Holy shit bro, I am curious about the Marine SecFo... Can you tell about it?
@mrfancypants29
@mrfancypants29 2 года назад
They will put you where they need you. I was in from 1996-2000. My 1st duty station was Camp Kinser in Okinawa. I chose 3521, a 2nd Echelon Motor T Mechanic. This is the level just above the driver. They put me in a 4th Echelon shop rebuilding engines with a few other 2nd guys. Something we weren't trained to do. The Marine running the Dyno was saying 80% of the engines he was getting were blowing on the Dyno. So they moved me to the paint shop. This was gravy duty! All we as Marines did was drive and move the equipment around for civilian contractors to paint. After my tour overseas was finished they moved me to 1st ANGLICO, 1st MHG (Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Co, MEF Hq Group). This is a unit that has to be least known of in the USMC. It was an Airborne unit and open to almost any operational school you could want to attend. The mission of the unit is to call any form of supporting fires for Allied Forces. They operate in small teams of any number from 4 to 1 Marine to do so. The esprit in this unit was unlike any other. I guess you could say that I completely lucked out in my enlistment. There's a Marine from about an hour and half north of me that got stuck at MC Base 29 Palms. He HATED every part of his enlistment. He was stuck in the middle of the desert an hour or 2 from anything he wanted to do. That's at the opposite end of things. Basically, when you sign the dotted line you become govt property and they will do with you as required. There's nothing special about me. I'm of average intelligence but I just worked out that way. Best of luck everyone and Semper Fi!

Wow, I found your channel by coincidence after just hanging out with my bro that got back from recruiting duty. He was telling me of how he had an allegation of lying to one of his contracts. This kid wanted Crash Rescue so bad. He point blank told him with witnesses there, that all he can guarantee is the occ field, not the specific MOS. The kid said "no problem I know I'll get Crash Rescue!" He got Airfield Systems Technician which is a fancy name for the guy that takes care of airplane runways. At first he claimed that his recruiter lied to him. When that didn't work, he then just wanted out of the service. He doesn't know what happened to him after that.

Knew a buddy of mine at work who was medically discharged. To be fair, it was due to a blood clot caused after a series of events in a hurricane, but he always told me that it was always the military FIRST's needs. Started as something mundane, maybe a combat medic, but a series of changes led him to become an aerospace engineer. You have to be prepared to adapt and overcome since they are such a small branch and are willing to do everything possible to fill their numbers ONCE you go in. The fact is that everything needs to be done in writing and the fine print needs to be read before you go in an enlist.

mans spitting true facts and I can say the with personal experience to back. Research your MOS but also make sure you know who your peers are in your field because you may end up in a situation where you get slotted or offered a position to be that MOS instead. In my experience, I was selected to be a Comms Marine but what i didn't realize is there are several MOS under that field. Had I known I would have been able to be more specific in my selection. Also, understand that every MOS in the Corps has its purpose and if not the Marine Corps wouldn't waste time and money on having people tasked and trained on that job.

For folks considering the 03 field: Life is gonna suck a lot. You'll leave with plenty of stories and you'll never be able to watch military movies the same. You'll play video games a decent amount. Your body will hurt, you'll have many sleepless nights, cold nights, hot days, in the middle of nowhere, your girl is likely to break up or cheat on you etc. But you'll have a hell of an experience. I'll say this though: You have to ask your recruiter the right questions. Push for maybe getting a bonus or an incentive based bonus. He'll probably say no but try to see if you can sway him or her. Also remember that dude in the video is right, you'll come out of your contract with experience in nothing aside from killing people and cleaning. Remember you can get dropped from your bootcamp platoon and your stay in bootcamp can stretch to at most around 180 days. Recruiters (some) are kind of shitty. Ive seen kids with all types of disabilities end up in bootcamp. There are DIs that have assaulted recruits in the past. Ive seen some people get fucked up mentally and physically from bootcamp alone. Im always going to be real with you. Its a part of your life that will likely be very close to you and when you get out, you wont have anyone to share it with. No one really will understand unless they've been in. Put some money aside as often as possible, invest into some sort of income generating asset. Buy a cheap car with very low interest or avoid interest outright. Much of the infantry is a lifestyle and a game. Many who get ahead either live and breathe Marine Corps or they are good at playing to peoples personalities. They are likeable and physically in shape. If you can do your job and PT, you'll go a decent distance, but if people don't like you, you likely will limit your opportunities. In my experience, you'll envy POGs and they will come off as very immature. Infantry folks are just as immature but they don't show it. You'll wear much of your fear and or suffering on your face. Fear at first and then as time goes on, that face of slight anger and discontent will show. You'll be punished for things others have done. People in your family may die while you are away. Your seniors might haze the shit out of you. You just gotta be strong willed. And most of all remember: "You are a man before anything else". Don't be a pushover or a bitch or pussy or whatever. Play the game, but don't be the joke of the unit thats scared to be real with people. Some will hate you for your honesty, and you'll have to do it in an appropriate manner dependant upon who and what it involves. But be the best you that you can be.

If your a student still going through college and the military is something you want to do. Honestly, engineering is a great degree and curriculum for getting a great score on the ASVAB or PICAT. It’s great to have that previous knowledge before taking either test. It can greatly improve your scores in GS, AR, MK, MM, EI, and A&S( auto and shop). Especially MATLAB and Drafting will help with the Cyber Security portion of the ASVAB at MEP’s. Good luck to everyone who will take either test. You got this!

Not sure if anyone is still listening, but your school work is important as well. If you get a good MOS and a good school, keep your materials from your course work. Chances are you won't use a lot of the stuff you learned in the field, but you can translate a good school to "real world" credits. Having those books will get you back to what you learned when you came in. I was avionics on those helicopters, the course we took was very long and complex, if I'd retained 10% or better yet the books I used so I could relearn it then I could have most of an electrical engineering degree done. Most new recruits don't think about the future, but you too will become old one day. :)

@no3144u
@no3144u 3 года назад
@@azurerisus4256 Go with your passion. If it's air craft then you gotta follow that. When it comes to your degree, do your best, of course, but don't worry so much about retention. No tech job will ever match what you learn in school, that's why it's so important to convert any outside classes (outside of college, like military training) into college credit as soon as possible. If you have to take a test then you will be better able to pass that since that test will be based on what is taught in school rather than what you learn on the job. Degrees get you the job, perfecting your specific job is how you stay employed. I learned so much in my avionics school, but I needed very little of it when I actually worked on the helicopters. There really aren't that many military attack helicopters in the civilian world so no matter how good I was at fixing those aircraft it was a degree that would get me a career after the military. I would have been able to stay with aviation in my civilian career if I had converted my military classes into civilian college credits as soon as possible.

Great advice. If you want options you need to get a high score on your asvab. My son studied and prepared for it. He earned a high enough score to have legitimate options. After boot camp he was locked in for heating, air conditioning and generator repairman. He was set to go and it was a solid MOS he could use after leaving the Marines. However, after MCT, they switched him to the armory, where there was a need, as the host here stated. Initially, he wasn’t happy about it. Turns out it was the best thing that could have happened. He’s assigned to the west coast and his fleet assignment is the 11th MEU. Plus he’s months away from making lance corporal. Sorry if I missed this, but please consider advising those to join at a later age if they’re not mature enough or not willing to do the work to succeed in the Marines.

great video. In 1986, thanks to my recruiter, I entered the Marine Corps under 'open contract' with no guarantees for a specific MOS. I didn't realize what that meant until I was already at Parris Island. Back then most open contract recruits were afraid of getting sent to infantry. I would have been ok getting sent to infantry. The thing I was afraid of was being sent to become a cook for the mess hall. The idea of working in a chow hall for 4 years seemed so boring and mundane that was willing to do ANYTHING but that.

Best RU-vid Marine video. Honest and raw. I made the huge mistake of not studying for my ASVAB, really wanted to be a Marine, listened to my selfish ass recruiter, and settled. I expressed to this clown I wanted to retake my ASVAB, and he gave me some made up song and dance that if I score higher, I would have to take another test, or some made up bs like that. My options for MOS’ were far and between, grunt, cook, rations clerk, warehouseman. I thought long and hard, knowing in the back of my mind if I settled just for the sake of being a Marine, I would be miserable. After that bastard recruiter processed me at MEPS, I noticed his tone started to change. From all in on me, to “yay I’ll talk to you later.” I kept asking him when I could come in and go over my MOS’ options, and he kept gaffing me off. I realized then that something wasn’t right, but I didn’t go with my instincts. I eventually showed up to his office unannounced and asked if I could go over my options. There were other applicants in the office, so he didn’t want to loose face in front of them. He reluctantly opened up that big black book and said, “you don’t qualify for shit.” I should of just walked out and never contacted him again, but I was only 18 and didn’t think ahead. I laughed it off (stupidly) and listened as he went over the MOS’s. Not one of them appealed to me, at all. The other recruiter was a grunt, and said I should go infantry. I left the office without an answer. After thinking about it for a couple of weeks, I realized I need to retake my ASVAB and that’s when this idiot gave me the aforementioned bs. He even got mad at me and said he’ll see to it that no other recruiter will touch me. Absolute lies. So I settled. Against my best judgement and chose to be 3051, a Marine Warehouseman. The WORSE MOS IN THE MARINE CORPS. Not only that, I ended up at 1st FSSG Supply Battalion, Supply Company, Storage. I swear to this day, Storage had the biggest shit birds in the history of the Marine Corps. They didn’t even try to hide it. Every single week, one or two Marines from Storage popped on a piss test. Saw a fat, Hispanic lance corporal tell a Gunny, fuck you it’s Saturday I’m a civilian today. The Gunny beefed the lance corporal, and shit you not, damm near every single SNCO stood up for that fat tub of shit. Was called in as a witness for the NJP, and the lance cooli had 3 SNCO’s standing next to him and this Gunny, was standing there by himself. Disgusting. Marines would disappear all day, and leave three of us to do everything, and NCO’s were all their boys cause they played football together. It’s was terrible. It drained me mentally cause I truly loved being a Marine and the Corps. I eventually volunteered to go on Westpac’s and got a glimpse of what the Marine Corps truly is. But plz, watch and listen to this video over and over again. CHOOSE WISLEY!!!!!

I was told that I scored above the 95th percentile. I just had to be a Grunt, as that is what I thought was a real Marine. I am different as I knew I was going to college after the Corps, so I thought I would enjoy my time in the field. I did, but I knew a lot of people who would have benefited from a trade after the Corps. When I was getting out after the first Gulf War, ALL Grunts, with the exception of Staff NCO's were NOT being allowed to re-enlist due to the draw down of forces after the War.... Like I said, I was good with this as I was going to college but a lot of my friends had a tough time finding jobs after the Corps. As a grunt you need to learn multiple jobs and fill multiple rolls and when you are out people look at you being a grunt and respect that more than most other mos’s. I am currently in sales managing a team of sales reps making 6 figures and that had nothing to do with my marine corps career. At the end of the day your mos doesn’t predict your future for all the kids that watch this. It has absolutely no application in the civilian world, but it was great!!! Keep taking care of those Marines!!! You are doing a great job. Semper Fi!!!

I totally agree. I got my choice(ish). I ship soon, but I hope I get to do research, but I know I got to start with training people and doing decontaminations. I wanted to ship in the fall, but they want me to ship sooner unfortunately. I wanted to be a door kicker, but after my test, my recruiter told me to pick something advanced, and I ended up choosing CBRN cause I love chemistry and biology.
