Hey I want to go to college but also join the military. After my service, I would like to become a police officer and have a bachelor's degree in criminology. I don't know if I should join the military straight out of highschool, or if I should join the military, get through bmt and then start and online college. Give me your advice thanks. I was stationed at 29 Palms with the 11th Marines. Although that was over thirty years ago I enjoyed it. It was desolate then, but I hear it’s much better now. I deployed to Camp Fuji which was very nice. In my day Okinawa was only one year unless you extended. My advice while being stationed on Okinawa is to learn Japanese, learn to scuba and a martial art. Too many Marines start drinking too much and that’s how you get into trouble. Find an outlet to spend your time.
@cm-pr2ys
@cm-pr2ys 4 года назад
I used to be in 29 for MOS School in early 2013, and on the Rock from 2013-2015. 29 has improved (there’s three chow halls and much nicer barracks with AC), and Oki is fun but you have to find it. To respectfully add to what you’re saying, I recommend you young Marines get yourself a Japanese girlfriend that can drive you around the island so you can explore for free and have 🐈 for lack of a better and more appropriate word. Everything you said was spot on. Semper Fi.

Had to watch this when it popped up in my suggestions. Here's the deal. Yes, I'm very new to the Marine Corps. I've been in for about a year, earned the title on Sept. 13th 2019. Currently in the fleet in Camp Lejeune. Listen to this guy, he knows what he's talking about. Expect a lot of bs even when you hit the fleet. You're gonna have to PT early in the morning whether you like it or not, you're gonna get room inspected at any point whether you like it or not etc. Hell, my roomate has to run 6 miles 3 - 5 times a week. But here's my experience. All of your entry level training will for the most part suck (meaning boot camp, school of infantry, and MOS school) I personally didn't enjoy any of them because you're still treated like a child even in MOS school. I will say however that things get better when you get to the fleet. It becomes your job except you still have some bs to deal with. But it does get better, once you're off your job you can do whatever you want whenever you want unless you have duty (just don't do stupid shit) But yes, once you pick up rank you'll be treated better, you won't have to get room inspected, you'll take charge of Marines etc. But for a PFC like myself, you definitely won't get any of that. I don't pick up Lance for a little bit. Even LCpl's tend to get treated better even tho it's still an entry level rank (you're still not an NCO) but this guy is right, it gets better the longer you've been in/the rank you earn.

Definitely true all tho I’m air wing so it’s wayyyy different than ground side and I’ve been in for almost 3 years, picking up cpl soon and once you hit e-4 it’s like you’re a whole different person. My advice would be just to stay humble and don’t bring the attitude from home to the fleet with you, worked with too many kids like that. Glad you as a PFC understand this shit.

Should’ve finished college and then joined as an officer. Your lazy ass making a mistake. You get paid WAY more as an officer. Like a new officer makes more than a staff sergeant that’s been in for like a decade. Plus you get to move in a actual house on base not a barracks room that you have to field day every Thursday. Also everywhere you go people have to salute your ass. Way better being an officer

Now get out there and work harder than those Marines that know less and get paid less”!
@matthewtraver2895
@matthewtraver2895 4 года назад
I EAS from the Corps in a month. 5 years. I was/am 03 and honestly I wish I could go back and relive all the best/worst moments with my boys but everything in this video is an honest and accurate account. Being infantry isn't glamorous or cool. It's a savage life. You're either going to adapt or you wont. If any future "applicants" are watching this... reevalute why you want to serve. It's not cool or badass to live the wild barracks life all the time. Don't drink away your paychecks or get involved with unloyal relationships. If you want to serve, serve with a purpose. And ALWAYS put your junior marines well above your career. Make something of yourself. Apply for online school if you have the time, invest/save your money and never try to cheat the system for personal gain. For every bullet you shoot, you'll have 10 unwanted tasks to complete in garrison. Take the time to learn your peers/subordinates and build the camaraderie we all idolize from our fathers/grandfathers. Take this mans advice seriously. It's solid. Good content bro, wish I had resources like this 5-6 years ago. Okinawa will be a blast for you if you haven't been there, passed through there twice. Get out alot, and take leave to other pacific countries when the bans lift. Take care all. Best of luck. And stop wearing poolee shirts in public you dorks.

@Cool Breeze, It’s not that the air force is harder, The USMC has some of the same jobs (A whole Air-wing) plus some more. It’s that the culture is different. My boy did infantry and tried to go to the Air force and even with his dad being an officer in the Air Force, he was told he would have to go through a series of classes to basically “DE-MARINE” I.E. learn to stop cussing, stop being so aggressive, be more polite.

I’m retired Marine truly enjoyed your information it was very informative to young men and women that desire to be a Marine. I joined in 1986 with a asvab score 38 however, I went in open contract, I’m not for sure if they have that anymore. My MOS was light armor vehicles crewmen 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Bn out of 29Palms CA. I was very blessed that the Marines gave me a opportunity to be a Marine after loosing a football scholarship to USC. I don’t know if they use this term anymore but, your first yr at your Fleet, your a “EM” “Extra MF”.... you will be doing everything plus your MOS so please don’t go to your Fleet saying that’s not my job”... because your feelings will get hurt... really bad. I’m not sure if they use the term anymore because of all these hazing policies....smh new generation...Smdh I’ve been a lot of places but, you got one thing right you will be going to Okinawa Japan although had great time there. I end up changing MOS to 0481 Landing Support Specialist were I had a better chance to promote. However, I had to take the asvab over again which, I got a better score, I only had to take two section of the asvab exam. Now you have to take the whole asvab exam. I retired out a CWO3. I didn’t think about doing 27yrs, each enlistment was different and a way to shape me as a better Marine. The Marines save my life and it was the best decision I ever made.

I've been out for a couple years now. Okinawa is real hot and humid. But it's a wonderful island. There's a lot more liberty freedoms for the marines but it's still a beautiful island and lots of cool stuff to do off base. Things you usually wouldn't ever do. The heat makes it hard for some people, especially in all your gear 🙃 but give it your all and maritorial promotions are thriving there. I saw somebody in their first year there go from pfc to sgt because he actually tried. Do your best. MAXIMUM EFFORT. GET PROMOTED!!!! Your life will be so much better.

I joined over 40yrs ago. I did not have any idea what my job would be. A day before graduating they told us our MOS and where we will be going to be stationed after a two-week break. I was told I will be heading from Parris Island to Camp Pendelton for infantry training school and they said you are an 0311 basic rifleman. But it taught me a lot and I had a great career. Ooh-Rah!

I will always cherish my time in the Corps. I enlisted a year before 9/11 and the Tempo of deployments 4 combat Iraq and Afghanistan 3 MEU's and a tour in Japan eventually wore me down. But I loved my time in the Corps. Great advice take it year by year. You guys coming in now have a social media advantage to actually see what you getting into all I had was a Vietnam era ASVAB book. 😂

I've been wanting to join the Infantry in the Marines, but everyone keeps telling me not to, not only because they're worried that I'll get killed (shouldn't worry about me dying in combat since we're pretty much entering peace time right?) but more of the fact that it sucks, it's physically demanding or doesn't benefit anything in the civilian world (Unless I'm trying to be a cop which i'm NOT gonna be) For several months I've been doing my research on MOS's and the Infantry and the Marine Corps. in general. And i'm still leaning towards infantry. The job I want in the infantry is Machine Gunner or maybe i'll consider trying out for Snipers or MARSOC if i ever get the opportunity. The Marine Corps. has always been a role model to me when I was a little kid. And the reason why I want to an infantryman is because I love guns, i love to SHOOT guns especially the LMGs and Rifles. The reason I'm joining the Military is to better myself, and to kinda get out of a bad situation in my life, to make a name for myself in the family, and use it as a stepping stone for my future. My plan is to do my time in the Marines (4 or 6 years) and then go to college to learn how to be an Auto Mechanic to pursue my automotive career.
@Jacrispy0351
@Jacrispy0351 4 года назад
Make sure you want to go Infantry. As an 0331 (machine gunner) you will have a heavy ass load to hump when you're in the field. Best be in shape, and be ready for endless gun drills. It's not all glamour and glory. Hot, cold, rain, or shine you will be training. I did it for 10 years and am now a mechanic. I don't regret serving, and I deployed 6 times to the middleast for OIF and OEF. Just trying to give you sound advice. ALOT of hurry up and wait, weapons maintenance and just general BS you will go through. Be prepared and be ABSOLUTELY certain it's what you want to do.
@swamp1138
@swamp1138 4 года назад
If you want to be an auto mechanic why not look at jobs that relate to that? In the infantry you won't even be shooting your weapon that much. The vast majority of field ops you'll find yourself doing bitch work, standing around in the rain, with notional rounds conducting notional shooting. You'll begin smoking at least 2 packs a day and develop a drinking problem. Guaranteed. Want to have a good weekend? You won't, because your boot ass will be on duty and will be getting screamed at by your Cpl who calls you a boot, even though he has no CAR and has never deployed and who's only a Cpl because he was security forces for two years. You'll eventually put yourself into a psychosis because of the constant headaches you'll receive bc Pfc Schmuckatelly and "that fucking guy" keep doing dumb shit like driving drunk and smoking spice - but it will be taken out on everyone. Here's a bro tip, though some may say you can't do this you absolutely can: if you you're in and you're still 'bout that MARSOC life you don't have to be in the infantry to apply. Also, I don't know if they did this or not but when I got out there was talk about making Scout Sniper a primary MOS as opposed to a secondary, so ask about that. Good luck with some of the poor decisions you may make, and good luck with the good ones. P.S. The GI Bill is awesome, don't not use it.

@@swamp1138 Well, I did four years of studying hands-on in the auto mechanic field at a Vocational High School, I enjoyed it of course. I know the infantry sucks and that it's THAT miserable, I get it, i've done alot of research on what infantry life is really like, I heard it's miserable, it's sucks really bad, you could potentially get picked on and be labeled as "That one guy" , I'm gonna hate myself and my life, and I also heard that the infantry gets you in the best shape of your life, but you what? I'm up for the challenge. I'm always up for a challenge. And if I choose to try get into the auto mechanic field in the Marines, I'm worried that I won't ever be picking up a rifle, and won't get 3521 Auto Mechanic by chance and get placed as a Truck driver within the same field, I got a friend who recently joined and wanted to be a 3521 Auto Mechanic and was placed as a Truck Driver, and was pretty disappointed, but ya know, he's kinda stuck with that job. But at the end of the day, Being an infantryman was something I've always wanted to do, ever since I was little, I always knew that it's never going to be as exciting as it was on TV and Video Games, or maybe even the past wars, I knew that it's gonna be extremely hot, exhausting and THAT miserable, I won't let people convince me not to go infantryman, I'm ready to go through the suck. And btw, yes, I've spent several months getting into shape and staying healthy.

Bro I’m in the exact position as you, my heart is telling me fuck it bro just do it it’ll be so badass, but my brain is telling me nah man do something that will provide you with skills and certifications for when you get out. I want people to tell me that infantry is awesome but everyone is telling me the opposite... so that you can take your anger out on the enemy, but we have no fucking enemy right now so my brain tells me “what the he’ll is the point”. I’m just afraid of regretting my decision no matter what I do, I wish I could be a firefighter but also learn how to fight I’m combat, school of infantry looks so dope.

Good video brother! Although I served in the Navy many years ago I definitely agree with a lot of this. Even though the Marines are the smallest out of the 4 major branches you all still mix with the Navy. Went to "A" school with Marines, served with them onboard USS Eisenhower and shared a hangar with them at the base cause we were an Aircraft squadron. You are correct the military can make your life better or worse. This was why I only served 4 years and got out!

My advice for ANYONE coming to the fleet, stay humble! I’ve met too many entitled ass kids bringing their attitude from home. Once you’re in the fleet you have a job to do, don’t make it difficult for everyone else. Just do your job, do as your told, and you’ll go home at the end of the day with no bullshit. You are at the bottom of the food chain when you get to the fleet, you’ll earn your respect by doing as your told and you’ll rank up easy as well. In some units they are doing CRB boards, those are panels you go on when your leadership feels like you don’t hold up to your rank. If you want to keep your rank and advance I suggest you do what is expected of you. (You can also get non rec’d which keeps you from picking up)

Coming from someone who got separated from the Corps (me), I slipped up with drugs and got the boot. The Marine Corps is a different beast. I was a good Marine, 4.6 pros and cons, multiple leadership roles (admin clerk, plt sgt, etc.), 3rd in my class, 1st class pft. But I can say that joining right after high school was a huge mistake. It's a great experience, but you get paid like shit, you get worked to hell, and you rarely have your work recognized, and more than often I see them criticize you even after working your ass off. I left with my S/NCOs feeling like my separation was unjustified and I had them tell me personally that they did not want me to leave. Everything you do matters, and if you go the military route, understand that you are giving up some of your rights to express yourself. There are still people I know in the Corps who felt like their decision to join was a mistake, and often times questioned why they were there because at times it does feel that shitty. In many ways, my separation was a blessing to go back to do what I love, but I still learned some valuable lessons from the Corps. I say, if you're a high schooler and want to join, hold on to your pen and wait it out. Really think about that decision and really consider your other paths. I never got as far in the Corps as a I wanted to, and now I live never telling anyone I'm a Marine. I don't feel like I warrant the title anymore. Think, wait, and decide.

I respect your honesty. Most people who don't have the USMC experience can't comprehend how harsh it can be at times...a lot of times. Maybe you can wait a while and try again. There are other branches as well where you can be just as proud. BTW, a can tell by your willingness to live truthfully that you're going to have a good life.
