The Harsh Truth About Self-Discipline (ft. Rich Roll)

I’ve often wondered if self-discipline is just a way of turning bad addictions into healthy ones. After all, addictions of all kinds are really just an attempt to numb and distract ourselves from facing uncomfortable feelings. Can’t the same be said for healthy behaviors once they reach a level of compulsion?
I brought ‪@richroll‬ on the pod to discuss this idea because, well, he’s a recovered alcoholic who turned into an ultra-endurance athlete in his 40s. Rich is no stranger to reinventing himself, repeatedly leveraging his flaws into virtues.
We talk about the value of pain as a catalyst for change, the idea that addiction is a spectrum that doesn’t just involve substances, terrible breakups, finding a deeper spirituality, lessons from Rich’s financial struggles, his career running a top podcast, and much, much more.

@@brianmeen2158 As the saying goes, "You can't give from an empty cup". It all depends on the context of what you're going through at any particular time. For example, if you're grieving over a close family member's recent death it's impossible to give to other people at that time. We can only authentically give to others if we have enough emotional bandwidth to begin with.

I’ve learnt the hard way that my addiction is a battle of the mind and the only way to beat it is to be conscious and constantly remind myself that I don’t have to be that person. I dont have to engage. The honest truth is that you will be tempted to relapse and you may. Addiction is easier to beat when you become conscious about your behavior. This is what I’m trying to get good at.

Yep. Video game addict here. I go through phases where I cannot put the games down and there are months where I just cannot put my mouse and keyboard down. Some new releases like Baldurs Gate 3, Elden Ring, I'd sink easily 20+ hours a week into those games despite managing a full time job and juggling the gym which of course something has to suffer as a result. Video games maybe aren't as noticeably damaging as alcohol or other hard substances but I believe for a lot of people it's really a vice more than anything and a lot of things resonated here. Whether it's video games or naughty online videos it's a coping mechanism to shut off that discomfort wherever it comes from. Luckily I've been gymming hard with BJJ and kick boxing. Playing a lot of guitar and thankfully all these things just feel a lot more meaningful and I largely in part attribute it to microdosing dried fungi. Psychiatric drugs just made me lethargic and possibly worsened the situation. For addicts like myself looking for a slightly more alternative solution that doesn't feel like you have to brute force everything like Mark mentioned try microdosing. Those more disciplined choices now for me seem almost effortless and indeed I feel super guilty if I skip a session at the gym or if I'm not playing guitar. Even boring tasks at work are MUCH easier to do. Try it.

There are a lot of videogame addicts out there today. I know one that is 38 and plays 5-6 hours every night. That is his life Exercise is or was the key for me too. If more people were to dedicate 45 minutes daily to exercise they’d feel and look so Much better . In terms of psych drugs they are very hit or miss for me too. They seemed to reduce the really dark thoughts but also made me lethargic and killed my sex drive. What freaks me out is how many people that are fine with resorting to taking psych drugs to reduce their depression that have never tried to modify their diet or exercise.

The discipline comes in when you are slowly nudging your way one small step at a time from your old ways to your new habitual healthy ways. If you’re a couch potato who hasn’t exercised regularly for years, you can’t dream up some crazy plan to do P90X every day and have a Summer body in 6 months. You simply start walking, slowly gain momentum, and momentum is magical if you do the most important thing which is consistency. Chip away. Daily. HIIT can be a turbo boost but not the primary vehicle. The primary vehicle is slow progress. I’m fit. I have been addicted to exercising my entire life so I have never once considered it discipline because it’s harder for me not to do it 😅. Same with reading books. I do however need discipline to begin learning a second language or an instrument. I’m not sure if I could ever become addicted to learning a second language but probably most definitely it can become more of a habit the more consistently I do it.

People with eating disorders have a ton of self-discipline. Lots of people have injuries during marathons that they never recover from. "isn't high endurance sports like your drinking to hide your real issues" Isnt that a natural coping mechanism responding to abuse from someone trauma bonding you. Coping mechanisms is a biological response and not a personal choice to stress in that moment. Drinking is a coping mechanism that works and the body and minds sickness is your hearts(feelings) trying to compromise the mind to choose another path. Compromising with yourself is another option. Choosing another path and eating healthy is another path and our body lets us know when we choose the right path. Compromise is the only way to learn from our mistakes. Radical excepting our actions and not blaming it on people. Using our body and not other people is safer.

Yes, but... what if we are addicted to always think that we are addicted? If you still searching for faults, than you will find them. Been there, done that.🤞🏽 Sometimes we should give it a rest. If you are at peace with yourself, then it's ok.

I've been in a chronic pain for a couple of years now, it doesn't make me more disciplined, quite the opposite actually.

Not physical pain, emotional trauma / pain.

@@GudLawdHammercy Now you're suggesting years of chronic pain don't cause trauma.

I'm not able to pay for my trash removal service right now and collect my garbage and drop it in public garbage receptacles and gas station garbage cans. Rich makes me feel like less of a loser now that I know he experienced the same.

After reading Elon Musk's autobiography, I realized that Musk is a workaholic, and sure, it had many negative effects on his life, but overall, there's nothing really bad about being a workaholic as long as you're in a position to be compensated for your work. I never understood why military people are workaholics when you're not going to get a raise for your efforts, there's no guarantee that you will be promoted before or amongst your peers, and at the end of the day, you get the same retirement benefits as everyone else. But for someone in Musk's position, being a workaholic makes a lot of sense when you become the richest man in the world.

I understand Mark saying that running for 2 or 3 hours just isn't fun.... Could be related to him being (relatively?) new to it. After a LONG-ASS time (like years), some runners feel pretty good for many hours, as long as the fuel keeps going in. Your mileage may vary :)

The way I related to the I just want to work and say fuck everybody else is sooo relatable. I’m currently a developing entrepreneur and work as a server but the satisfaction I get from helping people in that way is just top tier even if it is just making them smile from giving their food idk it’s weird
