Interesting side note concerning the US military's experiments with MDMA. Their trials concluded that subjects became too empathetic, too passive, and far more willing to engage with an adversary on non-adversarial terms, thus the chemical had "limited to no tactical value."

If you didn’t experience it directly, the late 80’s early to mid nineties was amazing. Getting garried up, dancing like a tit, hugging everyone around you and just being with 100’s of people with no trouble. No showing off, no pretentiousness just good vibes, amazing tunes and a lot of come downs. Partying will never be the same as long as people care more about how they look, over having an amazing time whilst out of your tree. Garries will never be the same again

i found the "ethos" to be bullshit. ravers love the beautiful people, they shun and ostracise anyone with a disability or who doesn't look "fit" at least the other subcultures aren't pretending to be nice and welcoming. I got stung bad by believing people who spouted that PLUR bullshit.

The moral panic at the time was real. Telling a bunch of reception/year 1 kids at the time about Ecstacy, the week after Dunblane happened was one hell of a mood whiplash EDIT: To be fair the way I've always heard it from people who were deep into rave culture was they were going for industtrial estates and not rocking up and taking over a town hall and blasting beats. Then you had the club scenes too with club ravers. Hello there Hacienda club for example

17:48 Orbital :) Back in highschool (early 2000's) I started to listen artists like Future Sound of London, Orbital, The Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers, Juno Reactor, et cetera. Back then it was all "techno" to me, maybe slighly more intelligent than what was commonly known as "techno" (read: cheap and silly pop dance music, popular at discoteques at the time). Then "Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music" came along, allowing me to educate myself in the matter... Getting into this music was just a matter of time, I always liked electronic music and artists like Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre and "Synthesizer Greatest" compilations. First heard the term "rave" when I was reading about The Prodigy - "Music for the Jilted Generation" was supposed to be reaction to the British law essentially banning the rave parties in 1994 (f___ 'em and their law!). I really liked the MFtJG, since two tracks, "Voodoo People" and "One Love" were used in the movie "Hackers". I also liked their first album "Experience" made in style of "breakbeat hardcore" (aka "oldschool rave" - common ancestor of jungle and happy hardcore) and "The Fat of the Land". the phenomenon so far known as "techno subculture" became known as "rave culture". I never was at the rave party. But I really like the music, like house (Daft Punk), actual techno (Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance, Chris Liebing, Siasia), trance (Astral Projection, early Juno Reactor), drum and bass (4 Hero, Omni Trio, LTJ Bukem), et cetera. Sadly the internet radio "Digitally Imported" which provided live shows for many electronic music genres, became more and more annoying with ads and then disabled playing links in external music player like Foobar 2000. Luckily the single-style radios, like jungletrain, BassDrive (drum and bass) or deepinradio (deep house) still work. When it comes to the culture, I think the PLUR (peace love unity respect) was not only nice, but also very different from how "techno" fans were stereotypally portraied, mostly by metalheards (read: gopniks/chavs constantly high on drugs (usually amphetamine), making lots of noise and acting violently towards anything that moves). I like the idea that people may throw away their differences, like race, nationality or sexual orientation and just party together like there's no tomorrow. After all, we're all humans, you know? Place where you can be accepted no matter who you are sounds like a paradise to someone like me - socially anxious, awkward and not really feeling welcome anywhere. It's really sad that moral panic around rave parties made MDMA illegal, despite being successful in treating PTSD and could be very promising for severe social anxiety disorder. Taking drugs at the parties is risky (to say the least), but if they can help people, they should be allowed for psychiatric use, at least IMHO.

Doofs are different to Raves, they always been connected to the modern hippies and Psy Trance, influenced by the Goa raves in India. We had warehouse and underground raves in Australia way back from the late 80’s, especially in the 1990’s. First rave I went to was in the underground carpark of a techno club in Fortitude Valley and connected a whole lot of clubs via tunnels made from black plastic. We had large venues that were still having multi room raves right up until the late 2000’s mostly focusing on Hardcore and Gabba, as well as even bigger events in some Showgrounds. We still have smaller multi room events that focus on Techno, but nothing like its peak from 1995 to 2008

anybody know the record at 11:56? It's the rave footage from when Hitman & Her filmed at Eclipse in Coventry? Frantic, early 90s hoover-sounding techno. Sounds like the nightclub was about to blast into orbit at a moment's notice.

Hated subculture? According to whom may I ask? Because I remember being a teenager in the late 80s early 90s and it was only Maggie Thatchers government and the police and the occasional up themselves parents that had something to say. Almost every kid was at it having a good go at it.....and those that didn't weren't worth knowing. It was our time and most of us smashed it and had a great old time of it. I went to many great nights, plenty of raves at the Sanctuary Dreamscape 11, Dreamscape 15 vs 16, Helter Skelter 29th April 94, I enjoyed Pleasuredomes, Distruxions, we had Dreamscape 5 in my own city in club Evolution we had it laaaaaarge. Tough titters to those that missed it.....well.....look on the bright side.....you've got Taylor Swift to help keep you going 😂😂

Being into "rave culture" I've watched a number of documentaries on the subject and your video here is an excellent update and explanation for the younger generation(s). I'm old enough to have lived through part of it at least... If i had one critique, i'd say calling the 1986 electro snippet [9:12] as house music incorrect, but otherwise a great video! EDIT: unless your wanna refer to it all as BDM (Body Dance Music) EDIT EDIT: For anyone interested i do recommend checking out ishkers guide to music for a great breakdown and example of electronic music history

Watching the hitman shit himself round a load of loved up ravers when previously he'd played sleeze god of the pissheads..and its true at early raves we had everyone there inc skinheads true. I went to early acid house then to licenced and then back to unlicenced with new age travellers festies(where hundreds of rave tents pitched up and the travellers sold the drugs, food and drink) happy dazE.

By the time this started The Beastie Boys had already released Paul's Boutique, what hip-hop historians agree is the first modern sampling techniques, so house music probably suppressed real hip-hop for a while.

its sad to see the state of some dance music events and 'raves' (if you could even call them that) today, rooms filled with teenagers looking for fights, filming the DJ 24/7, £4 bottles of water and they go to hear music they already know. Wish I was around in these days
