The Haunted House, silent film from 1908. Directed by Segundo de Chomón. Impressive use of stop motion tricks for era.
Segundo Víctor Aurelio Chomón y Ruiz (17 October 1871 in Teruel - 2 May 1929) was a pioneering Spanish film director. He produced many short films in France while working for Pathé Frères and has been compared to Georges Méliès, due to his frequent camera tricks and optical illusions.

I have to admire the tenacity of the characters. No matter what happened, they weren't leaving! The goblin had to physically remove them to get rid of them.

@@jessfrankel5212 "The Humpty Dumpty Circus" is an allegedly lost American short film, shot using stop-motion animated toy animals, directed by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith. The short was originally believed to have been produced in 1898, but more recent research dates it to around 1908 (which makes Smith a liar). "The Haunted House" is from 1907. The first stop-motion effects (in Spanish, "paso de manivela") were probably made by Meliès in 1896. Chomón systematized it, turning a "technique" into a "technology". Try again you.

I'm afraid for my own generation. I'm a high schooler. And no, I'm not offended. I just think that conflict isn't something that will be positive in both our lives. I don't like "The birth of a Nation", but I don't think we should destroy it. It's a piece of history, weather we like it or not, and any history we can learn from. You can learn some extreamly interesting facts about the times from these films. You can see what evolved into what we have now. Actors such as Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton are what influenced Jackie Chan. They invented a lot of things we use today. Now I know that a lot of silent films might be unpolitically correct, but they are the foundation that all cinema is built on. That alone makes me respect them. Then there's the level of genius they had to put it in to it. They had to invent most of the ways for their practical effects. Nowadays we can just use green screen, but back then they had to find out a way to get the desired backdrop. In Harold Lloyd's Safety Last, they build a set on top of a sky scraper so that it would look like he was in actual danger. In reality, it was only a twenty-ish foot drop. And then in others, there was no trick photography. In Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr, a whole wall falls on him, with him standing in just the right place for a little window at the top. He could have died, as the wall weighed two tonnes, and he had two inches of clearance. In short, though some silent films are stupid, politically incorrect, or disturbing, (some of the old horror movies are horrible) some of them were also ingenious, with fantastic practical effects, and sometimes literally neck breaking stunts (see Buster Keaton's Sherlock Jr), and are worth a chance. I am aware that as a high school student my opinion isn't popular, but please have some respect for it.

Interesting to see the probably earlier literary tropes that we still see in haunted house films: the haunted picture or mirror, for eg. The realism comes from the flawless timing of the stop motion. If you slow down the video 0.25x you will see that there aren't as many frames in the cutting scene as you would expect for such a smooth looking sequence. My guess is that they used a reference film of someone cutting the sausage and 'staged' individual frames accordingly, like a sort of early rotoscoping process, but this is of course just speculation on my part.

Just another example of why you should buy pre-haunted when you are investing in a home. Lovely little film, I'm surprised that I have never seen it before.

It's super weird that we're essentially the first humans ever to be able to watch history in the present.

Wow! Special effects and stop motion in 1908? Must have taken a LONG time to make this movie...and the physical comedy? Wore me out just watching it. Actors from those days were out if this world!

The acting in these old films is always so funny ... there's always some guy gesturing expansively and waving about grandiosely. Big movements.

The camera trick was already very good back in 1908. Wow!

Excellent! I laughed out loud HARD all the way. This was truly riveting. Not only was it funny it was unnerving. These old movies were creepy in a way that movies today aren't despite or perhaps because of the lack of technology.

This movie has a sense of comedy in it but it does kind of haunt you in a way like a lost and unknown film from a long time ago that you found on the side of a road.

Formatted very much like a stage show comedy. I love it. Impressive a 115 year old film is preserved and we can watch it today.

The special FX are good! Better than the 1960's disappearing act.
