She did love him, just not romantically... she likes girls. She stayed in the relationship & accepted his proposal because she hadn't come to terms with her sexually. She was confused and felt pressured into it. She ended things because she knew it wasn't right for her and wasn't fair to do to him.
The reason Dani doesn’t want to get married is because she’s a lesbian when she’s saying she loves him she’s saying that she loves him in a platonic way but isn’t romantically interested in him, not having anyone there for her Edmunds family basically took her in witch is why she says she felt obligated like it was the path that was chosen for her.
I really thought she was bi and was simply "stuck" in a relationship she didn't want to be in but didn't know how to say "no" and was just hoping that she would eventually fall in love with him but didn't and by then there was already a wedding being planned... I mean, the lesbian thing makes more sense, but I'm just saying that the scenario I described is also likely.
@@PeterDB90 It's likely but not when you consider her behavior during all the wedding prep (just going through the motions) and the moment with the seamstress. That's when it clicked for me - she was repressing her sexuality and was feeling extreme guilt as a result. She thought the love she felt for him was romantic but as time went on and she became more and more "aware" of herself, she realized it wasn't the same kind of love he felt for her.
@@diamcole This is what I see too, it's also the 1980's we are talking about here. Lots of people were still in the closet then, you hid it so you wouldn't be disowned by your family and cuz it could actually be very dangerous there were several cases I remember during the 80's and early 90's of homosexuals being beat, s. assaulted (usually lesbians by hetero men), or killed for being found out. Not that things don't happen today but it was a way bigger issue in the US at that time especially after the aids crisis hate crimes rose. But being shunned by the community or disowned by family was the more common response especially in suburbia USA.
As I lost my mom to a sickness, I cried a flood too during that scene. Because I could relate so much to everything he said... I’m wondering if he lost a parent as well, considering his reaction😢
@@soph6094It's possible he did, but I think the thought of a parent or loved one developing a memory disease is enough to make one sad. It's a very sympathetic situation, in addition to being an extremely empathetic one. I cried when I watched the scene, and every time I saw a reaction to it, despite never having experienced something like that.

Keep in mind this is taking place in the 80s. Dani's reasons for going along with the marriage were a pretty common thing for queer people back then, and the fact that she actually broke things off instead of going through with it says a lot about her character (her strength and bravery, in particular).

I know other people have already said this but Dani is a lesbian so that’s why she called off the engagement. Her fiancé is telling what he thinks is an adorable story about how he kept asking Dani to marry him until she eventually says yes, so that, combined with his family being more a family to her than her mother, is why she accepts the proposal and assumes she’ll eventually feel for him what he feels for her. As the wedding date looms closer she realizes that she’ll never feel the way she’s thinks she’s supposed to about him and finally comes to terms with her attraction to women.
she broke up because shes attracted to women not men. Hence the dress fitting scene- they kept things suttle. And in her explaination to Edmund, something along the lines of “I thought if I just stuck it out, Id feel the way Im SUPPOSED to”. She doesnt have romantic feelings for him because he’s a man. Gotta remember the time of the show- coming out as gay wasnt so common, and she was afraid of losing people and disappointing people.
Everything was explained in this episode. Dany lost her parents at an early age. What remained to her and the whole world was her childhood friend and his family. That's why she's afraid of losing them and does everything right for them. I don't understand how four people don't realize that Dany is actually a lesbian and is not into boys. To make matters worse, the time was different back then and that she was also afraid to tell other people. Again for fear of losing them. And she certainly didn't admit it to herself. In addition, she has a boyfriend who unintentionally puts her under pressure with the love for her, which is not the same love she feels. He also makes all the plans. He wanted to marry her when they were 10. And the question came up again and again. He is someone who has to persuade her and does not let go. This certainly applies to other topics as well. He doesn't even notice that something is wrong with their relationship. And this has been the case for years. In any case, in the end Dany always says yes to him and his family. Until the wedding becomes concrete and her bridesmaid puts her wedding dress on her and touches her and she felt attracted to her. I think that was the ultimate point for her not to let the wedding happen and to confess. Then came the accident and her escape from everyone. Towards how she thought into a new life. And if that's not clear yet, her boyfriend is not a ghost but only a feeling of guilt.
Taking oblivious to new heights guys! Rahul Kohli deserves some praise for this episode, what an incredible display of grief, just an amazing scene by the bonfire.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the "It" in "The Way It Came" is referring to sadness, because omg 😭 Between Flora, Owen, and Dani all processing their grief this episode, I was left a puddle. (All 3 actors knocked it out of the park this episode as well, especially Owen). *Also, kudos to you guys for continuing to have emotionally honest reactions to these shows.
Absolutely splendid, so sad Corey is so adorable this show is a lot sadder than the haunting of hill house in my opinion, the reason Dani didn’t want to get married is because she’s a lesbian thought that was obvious haha, cant wait to see more of the mike Flanagan series another show you guys should check out is WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.

The bonfire scenes are rough.. if I had to lament all of my loved ones that I've lost, I'd have been there for a week..but like Owen, I stay positive mostly now.. Eff Flanagan and his uncanny ability to pull on the heart strings..lol So, my best guess is that Dani loved Edmund and having "lost" her own family, his family became hers but she was not "in love" with him in a romantic way.. FINALLY and most IMPORTANTLY, Blake actually kissed someone!?! Thought he'd be too busy playing Elden Ring for that.. Hahahahaha..just messin' XO

Corey: I just wanted to give you a hug when you watched Owen's speech. I didn't know if you understood what he was going through, or were just moved by the scene, but I felt for you. I found it funny when Blake was talking about reasonable deductive skills right after being like "why did she dump him?" 😂 I feel for both Dani and Edmund. I only recently began to explore that I am bi. I brushed off my feelings for women for years. I don't doubt that she truly loved Edmund the only way she could and hoped for years it would be enough. I can understand why he was deeply hurt though. I hope that in time he would have accepted her, but i try to have grace that it was like 10 minutes. He certainly didn't deserve death. She didn’t betray him by taking time to understand and accept her sexuality though. She needs to forgive herself. It was awful timing, but she didn't shove him into the road. I love this show. Jamie and Owen are my favorite characters. Everyone is great though, except Peter. Actor is great, but the character is awful.
“Is this wedding fake?”- that’s the engagement party. Dani was stressed because Edmund tried to push romantic feelings on her, and because his family took care of her when her mom couldn’t, she went along with it even though she’s gay. She doesn’t find the story “cute” or “funny”. Remember in the last episode the Gardner said “people mix up love and possession”- all of the stories play into that theme.
The reason Dani didn't want to get married is because she could no longer run away from the fact she was a lesbian. Despite loving Edmund as her best friend she finally began to except who she was and how she wanted to live her life.
I didn't pay much attention to Owen's speech on my first watch, even though I had recently lost my dad. But I had to pause and cry when Corey did. idk if it's about sharing grief, but I needed that.
Honestly let’s praise the boys for assuming that Dani is just bi. Progressive kings! 😂 It’s also easy to forget that the show is set in the 80s because there’s an intentional timelessness to Bly.
You guys posted this around 12am my time. When I tell you screamed laughed so hard, when Blake asked why she didn't want to marry Eddie. Like guys none of picked it up. I was right there with Corey. That Owen scene get's me everytime.
Please tell me the other three can’t see each other onscreen, like we the audience can? Otherwise, it makes it even more painful to see Cory breakdown alone, with no acknowledgment from the other guys. I cry thinking of my mother who died, during that scene with Owen and just wanted to give Cory a solid hug.
I lost my grandma to Alzeimers and she would introduce me to my dad and tell me how much I look like him. Really tough to have to watch it happen. These things always really get to me
Bly is much sadder (and less scary) than Hill House was for sure! Are you continuing the Flanaverse after this? Midnight Mass, Midnight Club, and Fall of the House of Usher are all good.
to clear up the women - Ms. Jessel, wears all black so her doll is all BLACK. The way Flora, made her... The doll that represents the lady of the lake is BLUE with long black hair... Oh, and Dani's a lesbian in the 1980's - where you had AIDS/HIV, outbreak and no one talked openly about their orientation for fear of being harmed...
Eddie wasn't a bad guy or an abuser, it's just that Dani couldn't love him the way he loved her because she's gay. His ghost is a representation of Dani's guilt. His death wasn't her fault, but she felt like it was because he died right after she broke his heart.

It’s funny you guys mentioned Final Destination because the actress who played Eddie’s mom was in FD2 - (she’s the one who can’t hit the break because the water bottle rolled under it during the highway accident scene) In regard to the Dani & Jamie kiss, I think both Cojo and Blake made good points. Dani *does* need to communicate better, and at the same time, maybe Jamie shouldn’t have just left her like that after she had just explained what she was going through. You are all so cute! She is a lesbian and as such she can still love him, but not "LOVE" him. She was conflicted in her feelings and couldn't admit to them that she had other feelings/needs. A hard path to follow for so many. Hope you all appreciate that fact going forward in life.

U guys totally missed the suggestive way the seamstress was touching Dani trailing her hand across Dani's lower back. Yeah, they normally don't do that. Plus, her attraction towards Jamie, the gardener, didn't give u a clue.. In my early years, I, like Dani pretended I liked guys romantically because it was expected of me. I was 24yrs old when I was completely certain I didn't like guys that way. - Man, Corey your breakdown made me cry along w/u. - Anyway, great reaction guys. Owen's monologue about his mother got to me, too. It was quite affecting. These Flanagan shows do know how to pull on the heartstrings. The wedding between Dani and Edmund was clearly ill-conceived because Dani obviously lies somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum. I've suspected that for quite some time. Quite properly, she did the right thing in calling it off before it went any further even though it would be quite upsetting to everyone involved. She did love Edmund, but it's obviously more platonic than romantic. Of course, then he's immediately killed. So, major guilt trip. Equally clearly, there's a same-sex romance budding between Dani and Jamie. Flanagan seems to like lesbian relationships in his films. Personally, I'd like to see a gay one at some point. 😉Knowing Flanagan's penchant for double-entendre, I found Flora's remarks to Owen at the table arresting, especially the bit about death not always meaning gone. This opens a panoply of possibilities, and I have a strong suspicion about someone in particular. Oh, it couldn't be clearer that Flora was protecting Dani from whatever that was going through the hall behind her. There's something that comes from outside into the house for some reason (muddy footprints suggest the pond/lake as point of origin), but I'm not sure what. It's not good whatever it is. I think the pond/lake is some sort of gravity well of bad juju.
