You will note that what gives the Gilmore solo its gravitas, and majesty, along with that intense gut-level emotion is the steady, almost slow pacing, none of the note sequences are rushed or sped up, this is like a majestic vessel sailing over the horizon, speed is completely unimportant, David is a master of articulate statements perfectly placed in the flow of the music: I had to get that out, thank you.

Very well said- Gilmore has the ability to put the Soul into Heavy Progressive Rock. He has to be in the top 10 of any guitar player list. And Tim's video's are always amazing in their lessons and historical content :)

What's that song? Right, right! You're bloody well right! Gilmore was intramental just as much if not more than Roger Waters. Tim,I didn’t think anyone could demystify this solo. When Floyd played Nashville at Vanderbilt stadium,you could hear this solo about 2 miles away fading in and out with the wind! Additionally, David has a bit of mythology surrounding him. I’ve heard some stories! In this solo, I love how he takes his time using space to build a sonic masterpiece. He made some history for himself with this one. Splendid work Sir! Thanks

Hi Tim. I'm almost 70 years young. My guitar playing ihas been stuck in the 70's as well. I would like you to know that I feel that you are one of nicest guitar players that I've watched/heard in my life. You get a great sound out of anything that you play. Eric Clapton is the only player that gets that tone no matter what he plays. So, I watch all of your videos. There's no sense in me paying for your classes. I've settled for what I can do but I truly wanted to tell you how good a guitarist Ithat you are and to thank you again for all the videos that you bmake.

I play bass. Every note with a Gilmour tone, for me, is a solo. 🙏 You nailed the tone and the notes there, dear Tim! 😉 Personally, I liked the red strat with EMG’s he used in the late ‘80’s the most. Great playing & tone there, Tim. Love to have it for a ringtone on my iPhone, for my alarm in the morning, so I can wake up with a smile... 😄 I love Xotic too! Been using their Bass RC Booster as an always on for almost twenty years. I’ve got six or seven of them (V1 & V2), but I’ve been using my first one still: they just won’t break, 🤣.

Gilmour is one of my big influences. 7 years ago I built my own 'black Strat' after looking at Fenders and thinking I could do better. 8) I found a first edition Clapton black Strat with a broken truss rod. The seller said it had been played in every bar in Texas, twice. LOL It is naturally reliced. I had a 1 piece, the most highly flamed maple I ever saw, old construction fat neck made at Warmoth. Then I found a micro-shop in CA that makes exact duplicates of Gilmour's loaded pickguard. The .120 thick black, polished edge, micro switch for all 3 pups, Fender and Seymour custom shop pups wound by the same people, and the 69 standard pup. Also the cut and shaped wiggle stick. 8) It looks and sounds just like Gilmour's, except for the neck. They were doing me a favor with the beautiful high flame and I couldn't say no. LOL It's the pride of my collection! 8) --gary

"Amused to Death" is an amazing album, it's the single Roger Waters solo effort that deserves its place in the Pink Floyd canon for posterity. And it's not just Jeff Beck's contributions, Don Henley sings in "Watching TV", Patrick Leonard contributed a lot of great parts, and I think Jeff Porcaro was on drums. Lukather and Paich too. I'm so glad you worked in that album, good for you Tim!

I was just today remembering a story about how, many years ago, an interviewer had mentioned Pete Seeger while in the home of Huddie Ledbetter and Ledbetter’s wife just about threw him out of the house, going on about what a [music thief] Seeger was and to not say his name in their home. No big surprise. Quick note; I’d been remembering the time Elizabeth Cotten was (trying to) teach me how to play Freight Train properly. Hence thinking about Ledbetter/Leadbelly. She was SO dear. Had such a gentle way about her. Lol , and very patient. And one reason why I LOVE this channel ! SO talented with a HUGE amount of knowledge ,,, yet hella humble.

I have never thought of Gilmore's solos as 'solos'- they are precisely composed parts. A solo features a player- like what Tim does from around the 10:00 mark untill 11:00. Awesome playing, Tim is one of the best!!! But it is not in the pocket and so intrinsically part of the song as Gilmore's part.
@matnukin1584
@matnukin1584 Год назад
I think on many Gilmour’s solos this is true. Live, he plays the solo on Time note for note with what he played on the record. Likewise on the first solo on Comfortably Numb. BUT: live the second solo on Comfortably is always much freer. He extends the solo, improvises around it, comes back to familiar phrases and takes off again. So while a lot of it is thought out beforehand, it’s not as precise as you might think. And come to think of it: would anyone really want to hear any other melody in the solo for Time than the one on the album? 🙂

Mr. Pierce, Thank you for the video. I grew up listening to Pink Floyd. I think Final Cut is one of my favorites. There are some songs that I watch or listen to live that totally crush my soul as a guitar player ( but in absolutely the best way). This is one of those songs. It'll be a week or two before I feel well enough to play again. I've played around 40 years but never had a lesson and I don't read sheet music. I play by ear. Drove the church band leader up the wall since I never played a song the same way between three services each sunday. At 53 I'm kind of that old dog and new tricks. I'm ok with the level of my playing. Anyways, thank you again for the video and I look forward to watching past and future videos from you. Ted

Regarding music circa 1976, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd was integral and remains legendary. I’ve enjoyed many of Tim Pierce’s tutorials on guitars, players, techniques, music theory, song craft, etc. but this late video centered around Gilmour’s “Comfortably Numb” solo, combined with history of David’s famous black Stratocaster’s evolution, is seminal for acquainting any listener or lover of music respecting that classic period of popular music. Gilmour truly ‘sang’ elegant voice-like phrasings through his fingers upon this slightly modified Fender Stratocaster, from 1970-1984.

I've been a drummer all my life. As a young boy I would play relentlessly kneeling on my bed, facing my headboard where my Jenson turn table stereo receiver sat with the speakers on each side. I would stack up one-gallon buckets from Swans Ice cream vender my parents would buy ice-cream from. I would sneak my mom's knitting needles for sticks and rock out in my room for hours to this era of music. Listening to you play it, sent me to a place of tranquility and memories. That’s one thing I’ve always liked about Fenders, it’s not crazy to mod them, unlike Gibsons. On Fenders, the sky’s the limit, where with Gibsons there’s only so many things you can do before you have to start drilling holes and stuff like that. Plus, people look at you crazy for any modifications on a Gibson beyond changing out the pickups. Personally, I think it’s a good idea to try to make any modifications easy to reverse, and make sure you hold on to the parts you replace. In case you change your mind later, or decide to sell it. So you can restore it back to stock specs.

There are a handful of guitar solos where the solos are so iconic that guitar time can be marked as "before" and After". Like, there was guitar playing before Comfortably Numb and after it. It's hard to think of a guitar playing world before that song because of the massive influence it has had on virtually every guitarist afterward. Another is the solo in Stairway to Heaven. Try to imagine a world in which no one has heard that solo yet. Others? Maybe Mark Knopfler in Sultans of Swing? Black Magic Woman by Santana? The outro solo in Let It Rain by Clapton? It's fun to think about.

Fantastic playing and video and as you noted, many think the solo in this song is the greatest of all time but its the second not the first.

In my opinion the greatest solo ever was in Hendrix’s song Hey Baby (new rising sun) the guitar in that track is out of this world.

I've always thought you can make a (Fender) Strat cry, but it wants to sing. Conversely, you can make a (Gibson) Les Paul sing, but it wants to cry! Those two guitars put rock music at a whole nother level! Without them, guitar solos (imagine this riff on a Rickenbacker) wouldn't be the same! I'm a big fan of Gilmour, but I'm also a big fan of Jimmy Page, and the Les Paul in his hands is intoxicating!

My favorite guitar gods concert was Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck at the L.A. Sports in 1989.

First, what a wonderful video on an iconic solo. Thank you for putting it out there for us,Tim. Second what brand of ear buds do you use and what/why do you use them?

Gee Whiz, Tim... No words. I DO have a question. When you close your eyes and/or look down: Where are you in your deep mind? It must be a most beautiful place...

Tim, i hate to sound like a suck up, but i just love to hear & watch you play. Your playing is so articulate, it's just phenomenal. You also have great stories, and you're articulate when you speak, as well, lol! 👍 👌
