The Haworth Fern: What They Don't Want You to Know

In this video, we'll be taking a look at the Haworth Fern Digital Knit chair. We've been excited to review this chair since it was announced, but unfortunately, we have some disappointing news.
While the Haworth Fern Digital Knit is a beautiful chair, the 4-d armrests have a lot of play. This means that the armrests can move independently of each other, but are a littler too easy to move. Additionally, the chair is also very modern looking, a sustainable product and for the right price may be worth it to you.

Looking to buy a new desk chair but don't know where to start? Check out our review of the Haworth Fern Digital Knit desk chair! This chair is modern, breathable, adjustable, and sustainable, but I wasn't thrilled about the 4-d armrests having some play. In this video, we'll share our thoughts on the Haworth Fern Digital Knit desk chair and answer any questions you may have about this chair. We hope you find this video helpful in your search for the perfect desk chair!

It's not really a $1500 chair. It cost around 500-600 a few years ago. They only jacked up the price because people have been saying it's just as good if not better than the HM Embody and Steelcase Gesture.

Hey my friend I have the Haworth Fern, the only option I have is the lumber support and 4d arms, I think it’s one of those chairs that doesn’t need the options. It’s my favorite chair I’ve ever had. I should note that I bought second hand for low price from Facebook marketplace. Also I’ve owned the gesture and the leap and I prefer the Fern over those options. FYI I’m 5”11 260lbs

Hi Luke! How would you rate the seat cushion compared to the leap v2?
@lukebrutal78
@lukebrutal78 2 месяца назад
I only had the Fern for a trial period of 30 days. However, the cushion was thicker than the Leap V2. It was smaller though and since I have a large butt, I could feel the gap on the Fern between the cushion and seat back. I have many hours on end in this Leap v2 and I never have pain, tingling or numbness. It is really comfortable. I like the size of the leap seat cushion, but the thickness of the Fern seat cushion.

Mr Luke can i ask your height ? It may help visualize the fit. Did you not like the lumbar support you referenced you would probably get it without . Can you explain why you dont like it? @lukebrutal78
@lukebrutal78 9 месяцев назад
I am 6’1” or 1.85 meters. I also have a large frame which affects comfort. My Fern did not have the lumbar support and I liked it. The backrest was amazing. The recline was smooth. This chair would still be in my house if the armrests were not so flimsy, and if the seat pad didn’t knock on recline. I also prefer a headrest and the headrest on this chair seems weird. I even removed the lumbar from my Steelcase Leap. I felt it was needed for my comfort.
@4433221
@4433221 Год назад
I just returned the Herman Miller Embody and have a Haworth Fern on the way in the same exact setup as you. I don't wanna get your hopes down but if you're anything like me you'll love the seat pan on the Embody and hate the backrest, there are 6 plastic prongs that they say is for sacrum/lumbar support and they stab into your lower back if your torso is longer for some people. I wish I could've kept the Embody, the only way I could've made it work would've been to ziptie the prongs away from touching the back and that's kind of dumb for a $1600 chair lol. Oh, and the Embody's seat is only great if you add an extra half inch of foam imo, I spent the $20 and did the foam mod and it made the seat perfect, after 3 weeks though it was destroying my lower back. I hope the Fern is better for me, good luck to you.
@lukebrutal78
@lukebrutal78 Год назад
I really appreciate that insight. Regarding the Embody, I prefer the Logitech X version, as that is supposed to have remedied those issue. The arm rests on the Fern we’re awful, and the seat made a bump every time I reclined. But it was a nice recline. It’s still on my mind to be honest. This Leap I am in now has issues too. Frustrating. If only that Karman was a little bigger… oh to dream.

What about the plastic base, does it change anything ?
@lukebrutal78
@lukebrutal78 4 месяца назад
So the base being plastic or metal isn't a big deal, other than the weight of the chair to move around. I prefer a metal base to slow down a chair on hard floors. It also provides a heft that makes it feel substantial and adds perceived value. Budget wise, plastic base is not a noticeable difference in use or performance that I could tell having though only experiencing the one I got... got my haworth fern around a 3 weeks ago i got it with the plastic base no forward tilt no lumbar no headrest digital knit , the recline is very smooth absolutely no thump in the seat, there is some creaking if you have the tilt tension in a specific position but thats only in full recline, by the way you can now get the fern adapter from atlas headrest and stick an aeron headrest on it there is a video from ahnesty, about it, also the seat cushion was very firm the first few days but now it feels a lot better, the way to operate the seat pan adjustment is having it pushed all the way in, there is 5 notches, while sitting press the lever push 6 millimeters forward and then let go of the lever, then push forward again and you will hear a click first notch and so rinse and repeat for the next 4 notches hope that helps!

I have shorter legs in comparison to upper body (~83cm from floor to ass 😆) I went to saloon and tested embody and fern, fern feels better for us higher than 6ft. But those armrests were flimsy and didn't catch any locking position so I can safely rest my arms on it. Everything besides that was ok. In EU price for fern currently is about 1160e and embody 1600e. @Le_Sourpuss
@Le_Sourpuss 7 месяцев назад
I bought this chair (waited a month for it). I've had it for like a week now, and I don't feel any of the issues you're expressing on this video. The arms won't make any noise or significan't movement, not unless you're deliberately shaking them as you are in this video. Also when you got up and the arm rest came down, that was probably due to the fact that you didn't properly lock it when you last moved it because the arm rest works with a locking mechanism. You push a button to move it, you move it, and then you release the button but as with any locking mechanism (ie. moving car seats forward and back) you should always give it a final push to ensure it's locked in place. Regarding feeling like you're sinking into the rear of the chair when the seat is pushed all the way to the front, I don't suffer from this problem at least for my size, I don't see any need to push the seat all the way forward but I imagine that you must have longer legs than I do (I'm 5'7") so I won't comment on that. The one gripe I have with this chair is that you cannot lock the reclining. Instead you can only lock how far back the chair reclines. That is the only gripe I have with this chair. And the arm rests could be softer, like more rubberized too. Other than that, the build quality seems pretty good to me. You mention Herman Miller chairs at the end of the video. I've sit in Herman Miller chairs which were 10 times more uncomfortable this this one. That overhyped mesh one, for instance. That thing will chew your ass up in just a few minutes. By comparison this one is much better. As for the Steelcase leap though. I haven't tried that one but at least where I live, it's almost double the price. Is it double as good as this one though?
@lukebrutal78
@lukebrutal78 6 месяцев назад
The fact that you waited a month for the chair means you did not get a ready to ship model. I believe that is the root cause of the poor build. I have had similar positive feedback from people that special ordered their model. I really like the chair. I truly debated getting a custom order. Perhaps someday I will also get the chance to try the HM Embody logitech version as that is the only HM chair I would want.
