I recently purchased the Haworth Fern chair, and while it has some positives, my overall experience was less than stellar. For the price point, I expected more.
I noticed a discrepancy in the reviews online. On Facebook, there are high comment counts on the product, yet only a few visible comments, all of which are positive. This makes me question the authenticity of the reviews.
I'm currently on the search for a high-quality office chair that rivals my long-time favorite, the Herman Miller Aeron. I prefer chairs that allow for versatility, such as crossing one leg over the other, which is challenging with chairs that have hard edges.
I'm hopeful to find a better alternative and would appreciate any recommendations.

I almost can't wait to see your Leap 2 review, mostly for my own curiosity. Knowing how differently we view the Fern, I'm DYING to hear your thoughts on the Leap. Just to be perfectly clear though, I DO enjoy your reviews. I don't expect anyone to see things through my eyes (even I don't always agree with me), and I view the content FOR the content (not necessarily the results). Thank you for providing an honest review. I found the other reviewers so annoying, especially BTOD whose reviews constantly contradict themselves and obviously have a conflict of interest. I bought a leap v2 refurbished for $550 Canadian pesos. Best chair I’ve owned and I’m happy with it. I nearly bought an embody or fern but man, I just could not justify the insane prices.

Very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. And glad you noticed that there seems to be some contradicting info out there for self gain. I’m just doing this til I find my chair :) haha. How tall are you if ya don’t mind. There is def a correlation. One you would think they would have put together by now. I dunno they came at me hard for a very subjective review of a chair that is subjective nature. Just seems like the opposite of a big “influence” company mindset. They should elevate the community and help advocate for better quality and prices. Meh. Perfect world and all that. Hey, I have solace in knowing once I find mine I’ve given a very honest opinionated view for those who may connect with it and I support those who don’t :) then I move on haha.

Wanted to replace my secretlab chair which I use solely for gaming & watching videos in my man cave … so i tested the HW Halo edition & regular version with the mesh backrest just 2 days ago.. I liked both and they were on sale so I bought one… the most important thing is to try it for yourself

When I upgraded to SL chair I loved it cause I was using some ikea chair previously … over time I had to add additional cushions to it for a more comfy supportive feel… i still do love the amount of recline it can achieve As i am staying in a hot humid country I went for the regular Fern with mesh.. its getting really warm these few weeks 🥵.. I am only 1.7m tall weighing at 66-67kg

The word "Subjective" being what it is, as an owner who has used both with and without lumbar, I'd counsel anyone who is prone to lower back pain to get the lumbar option. For me (subjectively speaking, of course), it's excellent. As someone who really would never say "Better" (or anything like that), what I'll say is that I find it extremely preferable to almost every other lumbar support I've ever used (including my other chair, which is a Steelcase Leap V2). As one other person said in the Comments, it's really tough to know without trying something for yourself. Chairs and beds might be two of THE most personal items, which explains some of the Reddit feedback Tristen mentioned (which had me cracking up!).

Remember throw your height and weight in here. The lumbar significantly effects this. Also the one I found is PERFECTT to me :) Some of the "feedback" was also fueled by "superiority" lol

@@TristanPope Reddit. Great comedy! ;) I'm 5'8, 225, but that doesn't mean someone similar will like the lumbar just because I do. I like VERY aggressive lumbar support, and the Fern provides what I need. The ONLY one I liked better was the ALL33 chair, which was HORRIBLE (other than the lumbar). Chairs and beds...

@@DavidLongo22 Your height puts you in a position though where lumbar or not this chair will hold you better than it will me. So this makes perfect sense subjectivity or not there is a trend with height specifically and how people perceive this chair to fit. I believe it's due to the lower location of the lumbar curve.

@@TristanPope Possibly, yes. In my case, I do move it up sometimes. It's always set between the lowest and slightly above that spot. I can't explain it but it definitely works for me, especially on days I'm having pain (more exception than rule but NICE to have when needed).

Im surprised you went with a refurbished one for your next chair, since it seems you care about fit and finish as well as solid armrests. Does crandall replace the armrests? I currently have a relatively newly bought leap v2, that I find the padding to be to thin on both back and bottom so have been looking at other more comfortable options. I bought a new fern on the sale, and also found without the lumbar there isnt much support. I put a small pillow in back and its much better. I find the fern more comfortable then the leap (in the same way as a lazyboy), however an unexpected effect is after using it all day, it started to both cause more strain from lack of support and I couldnt focus as well being in a more relaxed position. The leap is not a good lounging chair, but I find it supports better when being used all day long. So plan on returning my fern and riding out the leap. The leap itself doesnt cause pain from lack of padding, just doesnt feel cozy like the fern does.

I love what Crandall does, they take amazing care to replace EVERYTHING. Good as brand new. Price that is good. And I made some interesting fabric choices for comfort. Stay tuned! ;) I agree btw. Too little support can feel amazing. But it will not after time and your back will cry. It’s a tough balance to find.

@@TristanPope I didn't realize crandall replaces that much! Im still in the window I can return the Fern, but Im actually debating keeping it now. Im finding I enjoy switching between the Fern and the leap depending on what Im doing or what muscles are starting to become fatigued. The only issue is that the Fern is expensive, and would prefer to have a cheaper "lounging" chair, but I also find the cheaper chairs have so few adjustments almost none of them are comfortable. With your fern which locking position do you usually use? The other issue I find is I want somewhere between fully upright lock and the first notch, which starts to feel too reclined, while the full upright is too much as well.

I dunno if I were you, a Titan Series for lounging or even a nice Ikea lounger with soft padded cushions would be my go to.

@@TristanPope Oh interesting they are already refurbishing those. Im pretty particular though and prefer to have a new chair not one somebody else has used. Secretlabs policy of requiring social media posts to get their extended warranty absolutely disgusts me. I work from home, so dont mind the investment in nicer chairs, especially with the long warranties they offer.

@@TristanPope Yes, I saw the whole video, which is why I had retracted my earlier comment. :) At first it really looked like you were overcompensating for an earlier review, in which you dissed the chair (which, in all fairness, didn't have the leather seat). But to stay on point, the armrests may be what will prevent me from buying this chair; so, thx for the review.

i posted on other fern review, but ill add at 1000 i want a perfect chair, 2000 is silly, its mostly plastic parts, I have a old hand carved wood chair from 1950's its godawful uncomfortable but at least it hard workmanship. Honestly I might just end up with a gaming chair + the 10 dollar lumbar pillow and deal with the fact it cant be perfect for my needs. only thing else i can get is a used herm miller around 650, but no knowledge of how long its going to last/who sat in it before etc.

Also made a video on the Aeron. I have had mine for 9 years. It’s a great chair. But as I got older it was not soft enough for my back. And it is punishing for bad posture. And let’s be real sometimes ya want a leg up haha.

I just got my black digital knit fern in the mail and boy were you right. Idk how anyone is comparing this as being anywhere near the Embody. This feels like a $300 Office Depot chair... the chair height raise lever doesn't even work out of the box lmao. The right arm pad moves around much easier than the left and slides all over the place. The arm posts are shit. The seat slides back and forth an inch or so, after it clicks in place. Most of the plastic feels cheap and sounds like a very cheap chair. I can't try out the forward tilt because the chair is stuck so low to the ground. The only good thing about this is the back. It's like they pumped all of their money into the back and then paired it with an Amazon chair. The digital knit material feels great and lumbar is decent for me. It's really the only good thing about the chair imo. I knew in the first minute it was going back... had high hopes and really wanted this to be the chair for me.

Sorry to hear. Yeah... there are some very simple fixes here for these chairs, but they are cutting costs in the worst places, but then up charging.. it is kinda insulting to us as consumers. The arms being different heights really made me wanna punch a cow. My Leap 2 From Crandall www.crandalloffice.com/?ref=29614 is on the way, so next week or two hope to get that out to everyone!

@@TristanPope- Yeah build quality on this is junk. My arms are same height at least lol. If it was a $600 chair, wouldn't be as big of a deal but like you said... people are paying upwards fo 1500-1600. It's laughable that Haworth or consumers can think this chair is worth anywhere near that.

@@TheMrKlassy Yup. It seems clear to me too, but apparently we are rare. I had a better chair from staples as a kid that lasted like 5 years than the fern. Things are not made the same anymore. It's more about a marketing budget than the item.

@@TristanPope Embody and Amia both felt high quality to me overall. I've only been in the Fern a few hours and it's one of the worst chairs I've sat in. Definitely the worst adjustable armrests. My gf Secret Lab is far better and less than half the price. I just gently flipped the fern over to see if I could fix the seat height lever and a chunk of plastic the size of a dime just fell out of the chair.

@@fudeboii Idk why a lot of people rag on them. I thought it was pretty solid for the price. Felt well built and sturdy. It is very firm though but I liked that. Not sure how they hold up over time... the chair I sat in was only about two months old.
