LESSON PLANS for this episode:
www.history4humans.com/produc...
The story behind the Haymarket Square Riot and the Knights of Labor's rise and fall is explored in this episode. The labor movement in America and the fight for workers rights is taught to put the Haymarket Square Riot into context. It covers why workers were protesting, the demand for an eight hour work day and the right to unionize, and how at that protest, a bomb was thrown that killed seven police officers and injured many more. This led to a trial that found eight anarchists, mostly immigrants, guilty despite the lack of evidence they were to blame. However, the struggle for workers rights continued and students are left considering the importance of remembering Labor Day and what it has given us.
Like all History For Humans episodes, this teaches students in a way they understand and actually learn- through story and with visual supports for diverse learners.
For teachers and homeschool parents, I have resources that go with this lesson that include interactive notesheets, a quick quiz, and an extension lesson that has students analyze a series of primary sources looking for bias in how they present the events at the Haymarket

The Police Monument is no longer there. It was defaced so many times (even blown up at one point) that it was moved inside the walls of the Chicago Police academy.

This is when workers actually had a backbone back then. Now we're actually slowly losing every one of those rights and we have nobody to blame but ourselves for letting it happen. Soon, you'll keep working until you literally die while your owner lays on their bed of money while watching you struggle. And LOOK! Child labor is back! Why the hell aren't we trying to stop this?

This really is the Tiananmen square of American history. Never mentioned in school history or spoken of until the most recent rise of unionization. Also astonished this channel isnt massive for for the quality of the content.

This was great thank you. I would like to add that this is so tied into the mass incarceration problem that we have. Furthermore, the U.S. and Canada have tried to white wash and eliminate this part of "labor day" Mayday is an important day and should be celebrated much more then labor day.
