James Green, professor of history at UMASS Boston and Howard Zinn, author of A People's History of the United States discuss the exhilarating rise of a visionary union movement and its downfall in the wake of the Haymarket tragedy.
In May of 1886 Americans awoke to the news that a bomb had exploded a Chicago labor rally, killing several policemen. Coming in the midst of the largest national strike Americans had ever seen, the bombing, the mass hysteria it created, and the sensational trial and executions that followed, made headlines across the country. National sentiment turned against the burgeoning labor movement, ending a moment of hope for the nation's working class.

In Zinn, I have faith, no end. In the book, I imagine once I've read it I'll love it. In this guy? Go to his site, and you get "activities" as an option, which looks very exciting, even if it may be geared towards younger readers, it's still useful and worthy of passing on. Nope, it's advertising. A list of his hot shot public appearances you can see blown up full screen, and book ref's. Then one goes to leave a comment, and it won't go through unless you've got Appache enabled on your screen, and that is on top of the fact that it gives no email that you can copy and paste to your own email/send in order to avoid Apache! I wonder what this high end university prof's finances look like, and as a result, how much time he actually spends WRITING while HIS AIDS DO NINETY PERCENT OF THE ACTUAL TEACHING THEIR PARENTS PAY FOR! You see, the more books they can brag on their instructors publishing, the more they can charge, which has no effect at all on the quality of your or your kids education, other than the fact that it would be the same or even better at the local JUNIOR COLLEGE!

Death at the haymarket is the best book on the topic. He died in 2016 and taught his classes until 2008 and from 2008-14 He didn’t teach and was director of the masters program
